News and Events / Re: Interview with Anne Pätzke
« on: January 20, 2017, 08:05:28 PM »
I enjoyed the interview. It gave me a clearer sense of just how many restrictions Anne was under as she worked on her designs, and thus more appreciation for her work. I think I am far from the only one who much prefers her Winter Edition work to her Carcassonne II work, and it sounds like that is largely due to the increased restrictions on her for the latter -- not necessarily a reflection on her artistic approach or skill.

Honestly, I find many elements of her Carcassonne II tiles to be beautiful (the bridges come to mind). Perhaps some of the things I like least (the color of the grass and dirt, the blue rooftops) she is not a huge fan of either. Who knows! So, a good interview. :) Thanks for sharing.

My wife and I played three games last night using my a LEGOs board -- Black Team (Policeman and Dog) vs. Blue Team (Chef and Woman) -- I should have taken a picture. :p

Unfortunately, she didn't really like it and (related) lost all three games. Between Hive and Santorini, we've figured out that she's not really good at abstract and spatial games and thus doesn't enjoy them much. Not sure if I'll end up buying this after all.... I enjoyed the few games though.

(All she wants to play these days is Clank!, which overall, is fine by me. It's amazing.)

General / Re: Carcassonne Highlights in 2016
« on: January 15, 2017, 01:41:52 AM »
2016 was my first year at Carcassonne Central (I joined in December 2015). Becoming a part of this community of fellow fans was my first Carcassonne highlight of 2016 and the one that led to all the rest. Other highlights for me were:

Discovering Fan Expansions. When I first discovered Carcassonne Central (and CarcF), I immensely enjoyed looking through the library of Carcassonne fan expansions that I had never known existed. It was (and is) a treasure trove of creativity, and I was impressed with the quality of several expansions which I considered on par with (or better than) many official expansions, both in gameplay and tile design.

Some I loved for their elegant simplicity (meepleater's Wells, Fritz_Spinne's City Gates), others for their interesting gameplay mechanics (Trebuchet's Bards of Carcassonne, CKorfmann & Jputt927's The King's Gate), others for their quirky creativity (aenima's The Big Black Pig Escape, PresetM's Questionable Creativity), and others for their beauty (wolnic's The Coast, and Astargoth's Kingdoms). These, and a wealth of other fan expansions which I very much enjoyed looking at, even inspired me to create my own.

Creating Fan Expansions. After "cutting my teeth" on some tiles for a relative's birthday, and learning a lot from the more experienced authors here at CarcC and especially at CarcF about how to design quality looking tiles, I went on to create five fan expansions in 2016: Fiefs, Vistas, The Schoolhouses, The Labyrinths, and still in-progress, The Royal Gates (an update to The King's Gate).

I really enjoyed the process of creating these (many hours in GiMP while listening to music) and, of course, the finished products. I also enjoyed the community input (both affirmation and helpful constructive criticism) and even had the pleasure of Leven designing a mini-expansion for Vistas called The Hiker. It was especially fun, if I may dip into 2017 a bit, to see Decar's beautiful prints of Fiefs yesterday.

I dare say I like creating for Carcassonne more than playing for it -- and not because I don't enjoy playing it. :) I just love creating for and drawing out the potential of this beautiful and elegant game.

Experiencing Generosity. I have been amazed by the generous spirit of the Carcassonne fan community. For starters, the newbies here (like myself a year ago) are helped rather than talked down to, steered clear of bad Carcassonne deals rather than taken advantage of, and quickly welcomed into the life of this community.

And then there is the love for giving to each other. I saw it in the I love the postman... thread before I ever experienced it personally -- people sending little gifts, even surprises, from across the world, just for the love of the game and because they liked each other. As I continued to take part in the Caracssonne fan community, I experienced this same generosity myself. quevy sent me a tile to sign for KJW's gift when I had no tiles of my own to spare. Fan from CarcF sent me a surprisingly large gift package. And danisthirty sent me The River II, along with one of his ever-caffeinated Dan meeples, as part of his Spare Bits Giveaway. I continue to be amazed at this community's generous spirit toward each other.

Adding to the Fun. Lastly, I made a few purchases this year: German Castles, Halflings II, The School, The Labyrinth, and a custom deck of Carcassonne Selector Cards including cards for my favorite Fan Expansions listed above.

Thanks you to all of you who have welcomed me into this community so warmly and treated me with such kindness and generosity. Though I live way over in Thailand and am not able to attend any of the meetups in Europe or the U.S., I am glad to be able to at least be a part of this fan community over the Internet and through the mail. I look forward to what new fun we will have together in 2017.

The Marketplace / Re: WTB: Traders & Builders (and more)

Yes you can, Dan. :)
It's easy to tell us apart - I'm the handsome and brainy one  O0 O0

Oops! Sorry for the mix-up Decar. And we'll see what Dan has to say about that. ;) I don't really remember what Dan looks like but his meeple is pretty handsome. :P

Don't worry, I'm not paying Amazon/eBay prices. If I wanted it that badly I would have pulled the trigger on Paul's 10 Euro offer here in the Marketplace. :) Do you house rule P&D to make it good for 2-player, or just play it as-is? I've heard the Dragon hardly ever eats anyone, and that the Fairy points are troublesome to keep track of. I am still somewhat interested, especially with the old art version really starting to disappear.

Well, Mareike at Cundco was very kind and offered to make a time-consuming exception for me, so Traders & Builders is now in the mail sans box. I will edit my initial post to reflect my updated trade wants and needs.

Can I be amazed you don't own:
Princess & Dragon, Abbey & Mayor and Bridges, Castles & Bazaars too!

Yes you can, Dan Decar. ;D I would love to have them all, but I'm not a completionist, and with my limited budget I've tried to obtain the expansions I think my wife and I will enjoy the most. BC&B, A&M, and P&D (in that order) are probably the next three official expansions I would get, and I would love to have any of them, but so far they have been lower on my list for a few reasons.

P&D is last among the three because I've heard the Dragon is not very strong with two players though, plus the Princess mechanic seems a bit harsh and the Fairy seems too fiddly.

As for A&M, neither my wife and I like playing with too many things in our supply (whether meeples like the Big Follower or tiles like the German Castles), and while I think the Wagon and Mayor would be fun (the Barn seems like too much), I would sooner throw in something like the Phantom or Shepherd instead.

BC&B is definitely the next one I would/will buy. I think both the Bridges and Castles look like very fun additions. And I would just house-rule the Bazaars, possibly using the Fortune Teller rules. In the meantime, I'm thinking about making some DIY castle tokens and ordering some Basically Wooden bridges someday, although those are a tad bit expensive with shipping and all.

If anyone's still looking, I've got a new-art Labyrinth tile I'm happy to trade.

Echoing everyone else, thanks again for this quiz, Dan! :)

Plus I finally realized Dan is 30 cause I zoomed in on the tile! All this time I thought Dan is thirsty with his cute meeple holding a mug!  ^-^

See, Dan, you bring this upon yourself. :P

And he's actually 36, according to his profile text. :)

This game is at the top of my wishlist right now. Miniature Market has the base game for $33, and the Golden Fleece for only $12, with cheap shipping to boot, which comes out to cheaper than the Kickstarter I think. For my part, with no one coming to visit me from the US for many months, I'm holding off on ordering this and will see if my excitement dies down or not. Hopefully it's still available for a reasonable price when/if I get around to ordering it.

In the meantime, I might try a homemade LEGO version of this with my wife and see how she likes it before I go drop $50 on this beautiful (but, from a gameplay standpoint, unnecessary) production. The only other abstract game I tried with her -- the much-loved Hive -- was a fail, so I'm a little wary.

I tried a 4x4 LEGO version with my almost-4-year-old daughter today and she was able to follow the rules, sans the win condition, which I didn't get into; we just took turns moving and building, using little LEGO flowers as domes to top 3-block buildings. Fun. :)

I must say, the third page of the aforementioned topic is quite sad. In short, it seems that HiG is leaning towards (or has already declared?) banning the creation of original-art (Carc I) version of its Carc II-only expansions (e.g. Gardens, the Watchtowers, and this upcoming 10th expansion). German speakers, am I understanding PresetM's post right?
Sorry stalcupojoy, no.

The true story is this one:
In the past I have created for "The Abbot" and "The Watchtowers" two expansions for the classic Carcassonne. At the time when I designed the Watchtower tiles it comes to my mind that this "copying" of an original Carcassonne expansion is possibly a copyright infringement. Short time later Ratz65 started his conversion of the old GQ#11 expansion into the the layout of Carcassonne II. It seems to me the best to ask HiG about all these conversions to get the permission to do such conversions.
I know, HiG has discussed the matter, but until now I don't get a definite answer from the executive director of HiG.
So please don't panic. Let us wait for the result first.

To quote whaleyland: "Sorry! Misunderstanding from Google Translation." :) Thank you for clarifying. :(y)

Wow, this is possibly the most morbid quote that's ever been atttributed to me. ;D I feel like I don't know myself anymore. Hahaha.

I am thinking we had fairs and bazaars, both of which sit on the bottom of my Carcassonne expansions list.  Now we are getting circuses.  I suppose the future holds the possibility of Amusement parks and carnivals.

lol Decar, I remember that one. :) I guess bad things happen when Google Translate tries to treat my English as German and translate it into English. :))

I have posted my thoughts in full in the CarcF thread, but suffice it to say: this news dampens my excitement for the future of Carcassonne considerably. It has always been the community's creativity around Carcassonne that has excited me even more than the game itself, and I hope that HiG will reconsider its stance on this issue (if this is indeed their stance). And surely, some of us old-art-only people would make our own home-brewed versions of the expansions for private use anyway, but that sure kills the collaborative aspect and community excitement of things that HiG could foster with a more lenient stance.

(Some of you know that the tile-laying game Santorini has recently drawn my attention, and that of at least a couple other CarcC friends here. I cannot help but think of how Roxley Games, on their lively Kickstarter, invited people to submit photos of their home-brewed versions of its game, confident that this would build excitement for their product, not detract from it. I think their approach was smart.)

Today my wife loves the postman.

I just discovered Santorini today (it's at the top of The Hotness on BGG) and I'm very interested too. Price is a little high, but I will have my eye on it for my birthday next year. :) How are you enjoying it so far?
