Anything Else / Thirsty Meeples visit on Sun 25th Feb
« on: February 12, 2018, 02:04:48 PM »
Hi folks.

I just wanted to let you know that Decar and I are meeting at Thirsty Meeples in Oxford next Sunday 25th Feb at 12pm. If you would like to spend the afternoon gaming with us then that would be great. I suspect we'll no doubt play Carc (apparently it's regarded as compulsory for a meet up with other forum members), but we're planning on trying some other games too from their extensive library.

However, because weekends are particularly busy, booking is an absolute must. With this in mind, please can you let me know by midday this Friday if you'll definitely join us (and how long for) so I can try and book a suitable table. A deposit is required to secure the table hence needing to know confirmed numbers. Prices are £6 for 3 hours, although this is reduced slightly if you buy food / drink, see http://www.thirstymeeples.co.uk/howitworks for details and we're likely to stay there for about 6 hours.

For those intending to drive, I found the park and ride sites (of which there are quite a few around the edge of the city, see https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/content/park-and-ride-locations) very handy. This was a lot cheaper than parking in town at only £2 for the day, with bus fare on top if necessary. Seacourt was handy for me and was only 1.5 miles walk from Thirsty Meeples.

Any questions, please just ask.

Cheers,
Rich.

Other Games / 7 Wonders app released today for Android and iPhones
« on: December 20, 2017, 05:20:01 AM »
Hi folks,

The 7 Wonders app has been released for Android today (it's £4.99 btw). It also now works on iPhones (the iOS version previously only worked on iPads). There's a thread on BGG with more info should you be interested... https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/71850/app-news-terra-mystica-getting-fire-ice-over-holid

Personally, I'm hoping this app gets me into the game as I've only played it once (at UKGE) and have a physical copy still in shrinkwrap on my shelf of shame!

Other Games / Lanterns: The Harvest Festival - Android app
« on: August 31, 2017, 01:19:14 PM »
Just to let you know, the lanterns app (which includes the Emperor's gifts expansion) went on sale for the first time today. I've only had a quick go so far, but it looks good - surely a buy for fans of the physical game? If you're interested, check it out at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.direwolfdigital.lanterns

Reviews & Session Reports / Nottingham meet up in Summer 2016
« on: June 24, 2016, 01:10:49 PM »
Just a quick note to say that Decar and I are planning on meeting up in Nottingham on Sun 17th July at Ludorati Café and we'd like lots of you to join us.

The idea for this meet up came about whilst we were waiting for the bus to whisk us back to the park and ride site in Oxford after our visit to Thirsty Meeples a couple of months ago. We were talking about arranging another get together which was more centrally located, in the hope that others who weren't able to travel to previous gatherings (in Rugby and Oxford) due to distance might find that somewhere in the East Midlands was more viable. We also thought that something just before the schools finished for summer would be good timing - after the UK Games Expo but before people may be away for the summer holidays.

And so my quest began... I have visited both board game cafés in Nottingham city centre a couple of times to suss them out and visited a FLGS about 5 miles away where we could have some table space. After lots of hard work fun, I feel that Ludorati would be an ideal venue for us - very friendly staff, a pretty large selection of games, great drinks, it looks really smart and impressive as a purpose designed gaming space and is in a good location near the castle!

I'll post some details tomorrow about the meet up, but just wanted to alert folks to the plan and hope that folks still have the date free in their diary.

Cheers,
Rich.

Reviews & Session Reports / Lukey-Dukey v Rich_The_Fish
« on: March 13, 2016, 10:34:12 AM »
Lukey-Dukey and I had a very enjoyable game last night. It was quite late so we didn’t want too many additional tiles, so we settled on using the base game with the German Castles mini expansion and The Astronomers fan expansion by Decar. We’ve only played with The Astronomers a couple of times so were keen to use it again. It worked really well, with several stars in the same constellation falling neatly into line earning us some easy points, although for no deliberate reason most ended up placed very near each other. I was particularly pleased to draw the FFCR tile with the blue star as it meant I could finish my cloister and get a meeple back, as I feared that I was trapped for good.

Lukey played very well and really limited my significant scoring opportunities, the most noteworthy was managing to get two of his monkeys into the large city and share the 36 points. He was ahead for virtually the whole game and took great joy in lapping me on the score track! He didn’t react to my show of force after I swiftly deployed 3 farmers and sacrificed his lone farmer in the main field. However, despite claiming the main field which contained 11 completed cities, it just wasn’t enough and Lukey-Dukey claimed a thoroughly deserved victory. Final scores were 169 (Monkey) v 146 (Cat).

Online Games and Competitions / Friendly games
« on: July 24, 2015, 12:07:39 PM »
Given the number of friendly games that are currently being played, rather than cluttering up other specific threads (which 've been guilty of), jungleboy suggested that we created a separate topic for this. So, feel free to post a screenshot and details of your friendly / practice games here...
