The way I like to play Carcassonne...
« on: December 05, 2019, 12:47:08 PM »
Dear all!

Now that Carcassonne II (C2) seems to be well established, I was wondering how you were playing these days when almost all the expansions available are C2 but there are some C1 items still on sale.

I would like to hear from you if you combine any expansions from both editions when playing:
- Do you play C1 only but grouping expansions by green color? What combinations do you usually play?
- Do you play C2 only? What expansion do you pick as your favorite ones?
- Do you play C1 adding some new C2 expansions not available for C1? If so, what combinations of expansions do you like?
- Do you play C2 adding some C1 expansions yo miss? If so, what combinations of expansions do you like?

I've been playing with C1 for quite a long but lately I've playing C2 since I got C2 German castles (I find them gorgeous.) I like to add C2 major and minor expansions to a game and even some times some C1 not available for C2, such as, Cathedrals in Germany or Little Buildings or the Phantom (really just for C1?)

Your feedback is welcome.

Cheers!

Just to illustrate my previous message with an example, my last big game combined the following:

- C2 Base game
- C2 Abbot
- C1 The Phantom
- C2 River I
- C2 Inns & Cathedrals
- C2 Traders & Builders
- C2 The Tower
- C2 Abbey & Mayor
- C2 Mini #2 - Messages
- C2 German Castles
- C1 + C2 Labyrinths
- C1 Little Buildings (pimped as wooden cubes to make them more visible)
- C1 The Astronomers (A fan expansion by Decar)
- C2 Celestial Events (A fan expansion by Cristinfunchi and myself)
- C2 XXX (A fan expansion by myself to be released soon, which we were play testing)

Sometimes we play with C1 only, sometimes with C2 only, and over the Christmas period we will use the Winter Download version. Can that be an option, please, so I can vote? We never mix C1 and C2, but have tried C1+WD in the past, although it wasn't totally successful.
AutumnForest (C2), Catch Of The Day (C1/2/WD), Cliffs&W'falls (C1/2), Coast (C1/2), FishHuts (C2), Fluvium (C2), NewForest (C2), Harvest (C1/2), Stone Circles (C1/2), Wells (C2), Jordan River 2 (AotC), River I/II (GR)
Devt: Sakura (C2), WinterEdge (C1), WinterCoast (WD/WE) and others

Well, we have some pending tasks:
- Our version of Carcassonne Game of Thrones (C1+WD and C2+WE  ;D)
- The Stargates... it stalled in summer, but I haven't been idle: since then I got some spin-offs to test the concept. But I think it would be necessary first to playtest it with Carcassonne editions that share the same mechanics: C1, C2, WE and WD  :o

Although originally I only collected C1, I have started collecting C2 since the release of the new Big box.
This has resulted in various options available, as I have full sets in both art

However I am usually version specific, meaning I don't mix versions. If I want to play certain expansions that are only in C1, I will use the C1 Base game, and with the C2 Base game only go C2 expansions.
The phantom might be the only exception to that, but that could be as I don't see it as C1 exclusive

I've added to the list an "any combo" option because, honestly, I just play with whatever combination of expansions and tiles I want – I stopped caring about the different art styles two years ago. It may be heresy, but I suspect others feel the same way. If you want to play Catapult with Under the Big Top, or C1 Hills & Sheep with C2 Inns & Cathedrals, cool. The only times it doesn't entirely work is when you need the C2 tile features or really want to play with the Abbot, but you can always proxy in tiles (Vineyards from Hills & Sheep or Corn Circles, random tile features for everything else).

Mostly C1, but it depends. But never combined old and new through each other.

Selling the C1 financed C2. So I don't have this issue.

We discussed expansion combinations quite a lot back in the olden days. Here's an old post with my thoughts.
