"Traders & Builders" Expansion - Question about Rules
« on: September 13, 2013, 07:40:03 PM »
Hello. In my base game of Carcassonne, the rules say that you score the farmers at the end of the game, and each farm gets 3 points for every completed city.  However, in my rules for the "Traders & Builders" expansion, the following rule is given under the section about pigs:

"When scoring the farmers at the end of the game, the player earns 5 instead of 4 points for each city he scores that has a pig in the field with his farmer(s). The pig counts only if he owns the field. For ownership of the field, only the farmers are counted."

I'm confused by this. The expansion directions seem to infer that at the end of a regular game played without any expansions, the cities are 4 points and not 3. How do you calculate getting 5 points for each city? It seems the math is wrong.  Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

It seems you own a RGG version of Traders and Builders where the 1st edition farm scoring was used. Per an older version of the CAR:

"Logically  enough,  since  its  basis  is  the  original  HiG  rules—and  since  RGG  has   also
abandoned  1st  edition  scoring—this document uses  3rd  edition  rules. Also, every  single
FAQ, and most expansions to the game, has  3rd edition rules  in mind. To date,  only two
of  the 15-odd  expansions released have  been authored  by RGG,  and neither involve  new
rules.  So,  for  example, when  the RGG  edition  of   Traders  and  Builders  talks  about  the  pig
giving  a  bonus  point  and  bringing  the  total  to  5,  that's  an  adaptation  of  the  original
German  rules,  in which  the  total  is 4.  Sticking  to 1st edition  rules has meant that RGG
needed to adapt every subsequent expansion  to fit—so  even  if  1st edition  rules  are more
'authentic'  for  the  basic  game,   they  become  less   'authentic'  the  moment  you  add  an
expansion into the mix."

Welcome to the Carcassonne Central forum PriusGuy2004! Great question - and your confusion is not uncommon for those not familiar with the history of the rules of Carcassonne.

To put it simply, and recap what Amorpheus illustrated, the cities used to be worth 4 points each and now they are worth 3 points each. Your copy of Traders & Builders must be from the earlier years.

You've come to the right place to get all those questions answered!  :red-meeple:

Oh, ok. So then if I am using my "Traders & Builders" expansion, I should just count cities / farms with pigs in them as only 4 points instead of 5? Is that how people usually do it when there is a discrepancy like mine?

We all are following the correct HiG rules.

The English rules by Z-man Games - they are simular to the German rule from HiG:
Quote
During the final scoring, a player scores 4 points per completed city adjacent to the field with the pig, instead of 3. The pig grants its bonus only if its owner has the majority in that field.

Also the best way is to look in the S-CAR 6.3 - page 32

Since I am new to this discussion forum/site, what do you mean by S-CAR 6.3, and where do I find this?

Sorry PriusGuy2004,

The CAR is the Complete Annotated Rules for Carcassonne.
Complete Annotated Rules v. 6.3 and 1.1

In the footnotes you can find many clarifications of the rules.

How would I know if I have the Winter version or not?

EDIT: Oh...never mind. Looks like the titles are winter themed. Interesting. I've never seen a winter edition here in the USA.

The winter version has tiles with white snow,
instead of green grass.
My website:

At this point the Winter Version is only available in Europe. However, last I heard, Z-Man Games should be releasing it in the States this winter.

I could see that "Winter Edition" might be confusing to people who live in places that don't get snow. Do you live in a place like that? :D
