Hounk 221
2 medium sized cathedral cities won the game for me and with those my advantage should have been much more than the score shows. Hounk battled all over the board gaining points everywhere. The farm was always going to be big and Hounk carefully placed meeples much to my annoyance. I couldn't find a safe way to glom my double meeple and in a last ditch attempt, tried and failed. I won trade goods and roads and Hounk won farms my 142 to 85 for cities was always going to be hard to beat but Hounk narrowed my lead from vast to attainable. He just need more time. Thanks for the game.

Do you think we could make it more like 8? The kids are supposed to go to bed at 7:30 and I won't be able to get 5 minutes of peace with them still up...

A delayed start had me quite hungry so once the river was done, I threw meeples everywhere they would go. Dan played his usual careful trapping game and quickly had my meeples and builder reasonably immobile but somehow, I got lucky and in the space of just a few tiles, un-trapped them all with successive tiles, a CFRF to complete a double cloister situation, a CFFF to complete a city and a CFCR to complete another city with my builder on it. At that point we had 66 tiles left and the score was 32:76 and I had a trade goods advantage.
From there my plan was to use fear and uncertainty with the my builder getting active on a cathedral city but Dan fought hard and dirty, looking to steal a valuable farm with his double meeple - I fended that one off. He kept his meeple count high and drew a good number of high scoring farms. The cathedral city ended up even with us both using it as a place to get more useful tiles and in the end, my somehow hung onto my early advantage.
Good fun. Thanks for the game.

I felt like I got off to a good start in this game and was pleased at how well my trapping seemed to work out as khalid had 4 single meeples and his builder all needing specific tiles to get them back from a relatively early stage. But before we'd even reached halfway he drew
all
the tiles he needed one after another and got
all
of them back! A cfrf (the only one) to complete 2 cloisters, then a cfcr (one of 2 or maybe 3?) on his next turn to complete his builder city for another meeple back + builder + good trade tokens. And then with his bonus turn he drew a cfff (common) to complete another city. Although I had been in the lead before this, the huge points swing put me well behind and made me feel like I'd already lost the game...
I struggled to keep going after this but managed to get several good farms without too much opposition. Meanwhile, khalid was working on building up what turned into quite a high-scoring cathedral city but I managed to tie this with him and used it mostly as a dumping ground for unwanted city tiles so that I could get a bonus turn from my builder (we were both doing this). I completed it with the penultime tile of the game as it scored me 6 extra points for 2 of my farms that it was on. This was never going to be enough to put me back in the game though, and the number of trade tokens I got for closing a city of this size was well below average.
Anyway, well played khalid and congratulations on another victory! Thanks for playing even though I was so late. Evidently it didn't put you off your game too much!

Actually scratch that, I didn't see the time Khalid posted -- probably not enough time before you play with him...

Rosco 257 :

The group stage has been kind to me so far and whilst this looks like the 4th win in a row, the score doesn't tell the fight I had to put up. Rosco went straight for the kill within 10 moves of the start trapping my poorly placed cloister and small city meeples. Not only that but his builder was already working hard compared to my lazy guy.
I wasn't getting anywhere, the game for me was just fighting for scraps, knowing that he always had the meeples in hand for the end game. With 61 tiles to go the score was 41:39, but I had 3 meeples in hand, quite shock given my original trapped guys. And then in the middle game I gained some traction. Firstly finished the first big cloister city which although not winning it outright, it did give me a trade points lead which I retained to the end. The remainder of the game was fiddling with farmers and trying desperately to keep my builder in play. In the end, the draw of the final tiles worked out for me.
Looks like I'm through to the knockout stages. Hooray.
One more game to play in the group stage, opponent unknown: Laura has dropped out.
Good game Rosco. Thanks for playing.
