Official Rules / Re: Clarification of rules - with HiG - 08 10 2015
« on: October 26, 2015, 02:35:15 PM »
Well, I had thought I was going to update the CAR a couple of days after kettlefish told me that the new answers were posted. For now I'm holding off, though, since I'm not convinced all the dust has settled yet.

For the record, I think 2 halflings should equal 1 tile (the old rule). I've played German Castles by the 2-tile interpretation, but I haven't used the dragon or the flier with it, so I see where issues would appear. (Our group did allow barn placement on the long edge, though.)

Yes, a huge thank you to everyone who voted! Both games were announced as semi-finalists, so now it's in the hands of the judges.

Hi all,

I need your help! I have created two card games and submitted them for a contest at thegamecrafter.com. The theme of the contest was to develop games with a "take that!" mechanic, and I have (not very subtly) titled my games "Screw Yew!" and "Strew Ewes" (if you're not sure about that second one, yell it out loud at your boss, but not if you want to keep your job).

The problem is that there are 90 entries for the contest, and voting will determine the 20 semifinalists that will go in front of the judges. If you have a minute, I would greatly appreciate you going to the following website and voting for one or both of my games:

https://www.thegamecrafter.com/contests/gamehole-board-game-challenge-2015

Voting ends at 6:00 AM Central (US) time on September 15. I believe you have to create an account with the website to vote, so I understand if you don't want to do this. However, registration is free, and there are certainly a number of interesting games for sale to check out there.

Thanks in advance for your votes!

Carcassonne Standard CAR ver. 7.4 Page 11

3  As far as the Big Box is concerned, the sixth set of (gray) followers is a part of the basic game,
not Inns and Cathedrals. Additionally, Big Box 5 adds purple and pink followers for up to 8 players.

It should perhaps acknowldege that Big Box 5 purple and pink followers are not a full sets.

Well, they have all of the purple and pink parts that you need to play what's in the box.

Well played, quevy.  :(y) X-Wing miniatures is one game that I may have spent more money on than Carcassonne. Maybe.

Reviews & Session Reports / What goes around...
« on: May 26, 2015, 09:33:40 AM »
Monday was a holiday here in the states, so I got to play two games of Carcassonne with various expansions against the same opponent. Game 1 was a fairly close and steady battle until about the mid-way point, when one of the cities started getting big (and ended up with a cathedral). Then the fight was on! Mayors were placed, a wagon moved in, glomming attempts were blocked, fortunes changed turn-by-turn ... and finally I won the city 6-5 in meeple votes. Total tally: 63 points, so not too shabby. Over the rest of the game, my opponent caught up some with cities, but I did a little better with farms. At the final accounting, I ended up winning by exactly those 63 points.

Later that day was Game 2. This one started similarly, but my opponent turned cutthroat when it came to farming. I had a decent farm of my own, but she controlled a bigger farm 2-0. With a couple of fancy moves I got 2 farmers onto her big farm near the end of the game to share control. Of course, it wasn't near enough to the end of the game. Over the course of 4 turns, she added another farmer to that farm AND sneaked her big meeple onto my best farm, ultimately winning both. I was definitely outplayed and outmaneuvered. Final score: I lost by exactly the same 63 points that I had won by in Game 1. The cosmic accountants got the ledgers to come out perfectly.

Until the next game...

That's true, I think all of the pre-A&M expansion didn't get a watermark on at least there first print. However, "The River" only has the watermark on the 2014 Big Box variant. The version, you get now at CundCo, and even the reprint in "Carcassonne 2" do not have any watermark. Also, the way you describe the BB variant might confuse people: Additionally, the backs of the river tiles in this version are the light gray of standard tiles rather than the dark gray of starting tiles, and there is a new watermark on the front. A "new watermark" might be interpreted as a different watermark then before. And considering that, it's likely, that people owning the BB5 version are wondering, what type they got, since their tiles are in every aspect as described in the 2014 paragraph, but still with the "old" watermark, depicted at the top of the River chapter.

I would at least alter the text then: Additionally, for the first and currently only time, the backs of the river tiles in this version are the light gray of standard tiles rather than the dark gray of starting tiles, and there is a watermark on the front.

The text has been tweaked to emphasize that the watermark has been added rather than changed.

As we wait for more Star Wars Carcassonne news, I might just use Star Wars quotes in all of my regular games anyway.

"My meeples can't repel a dragon of that magnitude"
"Sir, the possibility of successfully drawing the tile you need is approximately 3,720 to 1"
"Never tell me the odds"
"Now, witness the power of this fully operational tower!"
(When not-so-secretly trying to steal a farm) "Keep your distance, Chewie, but don’t, y’know, look like you’re keeping your distance.”
"Farm casual"

And, of course, "I've got a bad feeling about this" and "IT'S A TRAP", as Decar noted, are perfect.

I have made essentially all tweaks suggested above to future versions of the CAR.

I did not change the position of the watermark on River I. It is true that not all versions of River I have the watermark, but older versions of some of the other early expansions don't have watermarks either. Consider it an HiG retcon -- all of them would have had the watermark if they had thought of it back then. The way I figure it, if you see the watermark, you know you have that expansion (ignoring the Spielbox pentagons). If you don't see the watermark, you have to use other clues. In other words, it's a specific test, just not necessarily a sensitive one.

I knew not everyone would agree with the way I did the minis. However, I feel that most people can figure out where the Goldmines come in the alphabet, but most people probably don't remember which mini number that is. (I was pretty sure it was #4, but even I had to look just now to confirm it.) So for ease of finding them, ABC order seemed most intuitive. The whole point was not to alienate people who are new to the game, and special ordering of a few seemingly arbitrary mini-expansions would be more confusing than it's worth in my mind.

It's that time again! Brand new CARs! What can you find in the new Standard CAR?

New expansions? Check! Both the Castles in Germany and the Russian Promo tiles.

The most recent clarifications? Of course!

Better organization? You bet! I've put the mini-expansions in alphabetical order, and I've also consolidated expansions with different names but the same rules (Crop Circles I and II, Siege things, Heretics).

The Winter CAR now has a section for the digital winter version (removed from the standard CAR), and I also made an addition to the Order of Play.

I honestly don't know why you're still reading this. You do this every time. Go get them!

Official Rules / Re: Abbot / Mayor / Wagon and Tower
« on: May 20, 2015, 10:52:54 AM »
...
Or we can just follow the rules as they are written. The abbot can only go on a cloister or a garden. The mayor can only go in a city. Period. End of story.

Unfortunately, this position does not even solve the question of the Wagon. The rules for the Wagon only tell you where it cannot go (Fields).

Actually, the rules do state that the wagon CAN go on a road, city, or cloister. In the next sentence they state that the wagon CANNOT go on fields. Obviously this leads to the question of "what about everything else that wasn't mentioned?" However (and this is not official), I read the second sentence as a clarification of the first sentence. Thus, to me the first sentence is the primary rule, and I treat the wagon as only being able to go on those 3 types of feature.

Official Rules / Re: The Flying Machines
« on: May 20, 2015, 10:43:13 AM »
What happens when a flyer moves diagonally  over one of big castle double tiles? Does he move sideways on the big tile then move off diagonally or does he follow a realistic straight line over the castle? On a similar note, does the castle only count as one tile when counting the kidnap range for a tower?

Good questions. These will need clarifications.

I never did understand why the farmers got such a poor deal if you were connecting to a farm that already had a barn in place
It actually is quite easy and rewarding, to connect a few farmers to a barn farm. And the points you can get from this are huge, once a barn farm prospers, and doubles even in a game with pig. So I would not consider this a "poor deal", rather powerfull.

I agree with Hounk here. It's not often that a farm with a farmer is accidentally connected to a barn farm. It's usually a deliberate strategy to try to place a farmer near a barn farm and connect it to get some points and your farmer back. If this move was worth 3 points per city it would be too much. As it is, getting two points per city by adding a pig and doing this several times can give you many points.

I agree with this. I've definitely used the "attach and bounce" strategy multiple times during a game, and you can get some pretty solid points as it is. If you got the full 3 points each time, it would be abuse. There wouldn't be any point to claiming cities and roads.

Edit: Also, I have adjusted the charts from Big Box 3 and put them in the upcoming CAR. Which might be coming out next week. Maybe.

I'll add one that I don't think I've seen on the list yet: Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small. This has some good but not too difficult strategy, and there's always one more thing that you wish you could do each turn. If you like the base game, there are also a couple of expansions that are completely worth it, too.
