So it was my turn and I got to place the tile circled in red and I could place it only exactly like that, even if I wanted to rotate it.
Why wasn't I able to rotate it 90° left, so that the river could continue north? I can't see anything blocking the rotation of that tile. Please don't tell me that would be considered a U turn for the river...

That would be considered a u-turn for the river. ;)

The digital versions tend to implement the river rules in a more strict mannr so the river can always be completed no matter what. So this u-turn is not allowed so no tiles are placed towards the river source. ???
