Abbey and Mayor playing against JCloisterZone
« on: May 24, 2015, 04:56:32 PM »

I have started playing against JCloisterZone using the Abbey and Mayor expansion.

There are two tiles which feature cities with bridges that cross over cities.

I used to think these tiles were interesting, now I think they are just plain evil.   >:D

I think A & M contains some great tiles. The city crossover tile always seems to come up at the right time to make for an interesting game and I love that it's now possible to have a 2-tile city with pennant!   8)

Perhaps you'd be interested in taking on some human opposition sometime or do you prefer to stick to the AI for now?

The CFFF with pennant is also of special interest for the barn, blocking farmers from a barn or destroying a building place for the barn of an opponent. To block farmers, also the two tiles with curved roads touching a city segment are interesting, although I would have wished, they would have included a gate for the wagon. But in general, I regard the A&M tiles not just randomly fun tiles, but very thoughtful designed, to interact with the included pieces of wood.

On the surface Abbey and Mayor seems to be  a “minor” enhancement.  With Inns and Cathedrals and Traders and Builders it was obvious what the expansion tiles brought you.  The Princess and the Tower expansions brought a much more competitive “head to head” attitude to the game which some people love and some hate.

Abbey and Mayor only has 12 landscape tiles and a bunch of other stuff that don't seem to do much straight away but they add a great deal of depth to the strategy and are well worth the effort of learning how to place the new items.  When the Plague was released it was described  as  “This expansion reaches deep into the game”.  I think that accolade properly belongs to Abbey and Mayor

I agree. If you want to play Abbey & Mayor well then there is A LOT to learn. I think most of the other major expansions are relatively simple by comparison, but the idea of barns probably more than anything else, and how this changes farming, has a huge impact on the way the game is played.
