Title: [SOLVED] Roads with multiple branches: how to count the points?
Post by: Matsya on May 18, 2017, 07:21:33 AM
Hi,

I play Carcassonne for a while now, but I still have a question regarding how to count the points for a road. And I can't find the answer in the game's notice.

I know that:
- A completed road gives 1 point per tile
- A completed road with one or more inns gives 2 points per tile

OK.

But, how to count the number of tiles of a road which has several branches?
- Do we have to count the number of tiles on the main road/longest path?
- Or do we have to count the total number of tiles of the longest path + the secondary paths?

I took a picture of the situation I'm talking about (please see below):
-  On the red main path, the longest one, there are 8 tiles
- On the two blue paths, secondary ones, there are 5 tiles

If it is only the longest path that matter on a completed road, the red one gives (8x2)=16 points. But if it is all the paths that matter, so the red + the blue ones give [(8+3+2)x2]=26 points.

Thanks you in advance for your help. :)

Hello Matsya and welcome to CC!

To answer your question: every branch is counted seperately.  In fact: every crossing is seen as the end of a road.  So your "red road" is in fact 3 separate roads.
As for the Inn: the Inn (the double points) counts only for that road segment that is nearest to it. (in your picture, the road going to the south).

So, points for the red roads = 5 for the road in the north, 2 for the road in the middle and 6 for the road in the south (3 points x2 for the Inn)
And points for the blue roads = 2 for the road in the north and 3 for the road in the south.

That is all in the case, there was a meeple on every individual road, of course.

Greetings,
Thodekey

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the answer. I have to say that I'm really surprised! :o I always counted the longest path, so the "red road" in my picture.

Thanks again and have fun! :)

My apologies first if this turns out to be a bad joke, but you are not an organic chemist, are you? :P

Alright, a bad joke it is. Hydrocarbon nomenclature. One needs to find the longest carbon chain. NVM.
BTW, what is WTF?
