Official Rules / Re: Why Escape a Besieged City?
« on: September 09, 2013, 01:19:50 PM »
On another note, I find it really weird that you still get any farmer points for a besieged city. The Cathars must be pretty terrible at putting a town under siege if the city is still supplied with food from every farm that it touches!

Next time I play with the Kathars/ Siege tiles I'll try the following:

- incomplete cities which include one of the Siege tiles are worth nothing in the final scoring
- complete cities which include one of the Siege tiles are worth -1 per tile + -1 per pennant but are otherwise scored in the normal way (i.e. by majority of knights in the city)

Sounds interesting, definitely want to hear how it goes! You could even be really mean and say that you lose 1 point per tile and shield for every siege tile connected. So if a city is under siege from two siege tiles it is worth -2 per tile and shield, etc.

When replying to this topic, I looked up the CAR's "Order of Play" (v6.3 p157-161) to check at what point during a turn a knight can escape a besieged city. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere, can someone add it for v6.4?

The rules say that:

Quote
If a cloister directly borders a Cathar tile even diagonally then at the end of a player's turn, he or she may remove one knight from the city and return it to the supply.

So I think it needs to go in to "Step 7: Resolve turn", but I'm not sure at what point!

Here is Step 7, with some inline thoughts about what happens depending on which stage you are allowed to escape a knight:

Quote
Step 7: Resolve Turn
a) If the active player did not score any points from placement of the tile, but one or more opponents did, the active player may place a follower in the City of Carcassonne. Then the active player moves the Count to a quarter of his or her choice.
The player could send the escaping knight (could be a mayor, big follower, etc.) to City of Carcassonne
b) RGG rules only: If a dragon symbol was on the placed tile, move the dragon.
Leaving the knight there and not saying you planned to remove him could make him a target for the dragon (as a diversion for some other follower?)
c) If a fair symbol was on the placed tile, use the catapult.
Again a diversion for "Knock out" chips, but more interestingly should he remain to be a follower for "Seduction" chips and allow others to change to him?
d) If a bazaar symbol was on the placed tile (and the tile was not purchased during an auction), resolve an auction.
e) If a crop circle was on the placed tile, the active player determines whether all players now A) may deploy a follower next to one already in play or B) must remove a follower. The type of follower is determined by the type of crop circle.
You could use (A) followed by escape to just swap in a better follower (e.g. mayor for normal)
f) If a gingerbread man symbol was on the placed tile, the active player moves the Gingerbread Man to another unfinished city. All players with knights in the initial city receive points. Perform Step 6E and 6H as necessary.420
Can a knight intending to escape score Gingerbread man points?
g) If the builder was already on part of the feature added to, repeat Steps 2 through 7e once more and only once more.

Personally I think that a knight should escape at the very end of a player's turn (i.e. 7h). So, even after the extra builder sequence if necessary.

That is the easiest interpretation of the rules I think. It could make for some cool edge case scenarios!

I can think of a few situations were you might want to:
  • you are outnumbered in the city anyway so you wouldn't get points even if it did complete
  • you are in an incompleteable cathedral city that would score you no points
  • you've run out of meeples and want to try to fight for another feature next turn
But all of these situations are when you can't get any points or think you can get more points elsewhere. I agree that there is no reason to evacuate if you can score points and have no issue with meeples numbers.

Why not try the negative points thing as a variant? I think it would have the effect of making people very cautious of building large cities!

That really is a bummer for you guys overseas. But maybe we Germans can arrange something for you (as long as you'd want to pay 24.99 Euro plus postage and packing)? I already got a request from someone to get him "Die Belagerer" and hope to hunt down another copy for him.

Hi Hylian, if I sent you a PM with my address could you maybe send me a copy too? Thanks for offering!

Which is exactly the kind of rubbish I am talking about. It is to spit the fan base in the face.

But, hey, they gotta make money right? :) That way they can keep bringing out more stuff. I don't begrudge them it too much, though obviously it would be nicer not to have to buy the extra set.

The really obsessively keen people (like me!) will buy the new base game and either give it away or use the tiles for something else and the rest can wait a bit for it to appear on eBay or sites like Hoard O'Bits which sell broken up tile packs.

On that note... where can I buy this online?! Googling for "Carcassonne Belagerer Mueller" or similar doesn't turn up anything. Can anyone (perhaps someone who knows the German shop) put up a link?

The Marketplace / Re: Clear teacher meeples
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:01:18 PM »
I am trying to complete my custom color meeple sets Brown, Pink, Orange, Gray and White. I would like to find those clear meeples and paint the outside perimeter in these corresponding colors.

Sounds like a cool idea - please post a photo if you do get this sorted out!

Wow PgMaster that looks awesome :D How long did it take you to play?

Tell us something about the game. Were there any big battles for features (looks like there are some high scoring cities)? Any really lucky tiles at key moments?

Thanks for posting!

The Marketplace / Re: Catching up - What I "need".
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:04:51 AM »
I've got 11 Cult tiles, 6 from CS&C, and 5 from CK&C.  Does anyone find that they like to have more than that?  I don't really feel the need to get the Cult Places expansion.  It seems redundant.

The cult tiles from CK&C are the same as the cult tiles from Spielbox. The only difference is the watermark (as Kettlefish points out).

Personally, I feel that a collection is complete without having to own both. It would be the same as owning CK&C and also having separate versions of The Count, King and Robber Baron, and River II.

Meepleater, the cheapest way that I have found to get The Festival is to buy the German version of the Anniversary edition. You can get a used copy from Amazon.de for 7.95 euros (+ shipping).

Yes, as Scott says The Plague and Little Buildings are both available in their magazines from Spielbox.

Cundco for The School, but the others are harder to come by.

As you can see from the prices on BGG marketplace, Die Kornkreise is starting to rival Die Katharer for rarity! I picked up a copy from German eBay for 20 euros a few months ago, so you can find it at not-totally-insane prices if you are willing to be patient and check often.

News and Events / Re: The Surprising Package
« on: July 16, 2013, 01:18:42 PM »
The mystery of the Surprising Package has kept me interested for days - glad it is finally in the open!

Are there any spare packages that could maybe be for sale?? Die Windrosen is the only expansion that I need for the complete collection!

Official Rules / Re: Complete Annotated Rules v. 6.3 and 1.1
« on: May 13, 2013, 11:34:30 AM »
There is a footnote marked as unresolved under the section on Abbey & Mayor:

Quote
230 There is not an official clarification about the ability of the wagon to move directly from one
city to the other on the tile shown above, where the miniature roads (driveways?) cannot be occupied
by a follower.

Isn't this answered (implictly) by the previous footnote?

Quote
229 Question: What is the definition of [connected/adjacent/neighboring] for the Wagon? If two
city walls are touching (maybe even only at a point), can I drive my Wagon from one to another?
Answer: “Connected” means roads which lead to crossings and roads which head directly “into” a
city or a cloister. Two cities never connect to each other (in the current land tiles). City walls that
touch at a point (such as at the corner of tiles) are not considered connected, so the wagon cannot
travel from one to the other. So the wagon has to use the roads to move—it’s a wagon, after all. [Also
note – a road that touches a city at a point but not at a gate in the wall is not connected to the city.
Also, a road running through a city via a tunnel is not connected to the city. – Chris O.] (confirmed
5/2013)

If none of the current land tiles contain cities that the wagon can drive between, doesn't it stands to reason that these miniature roads do not connect the cities for the purposes of the wagon?
