Carcassonne as a Spectator Sport
« on: June 09, 2014, 07:13:45 AM »
I have been experimenting a bit with JCloisterZone, and found that you can view the game even if you are not playing!

If you connect to whomever is hosting the game, but do not select a player, you will be able to watch the game as it happens.

Once the game starts, it seems that the only thing you can effect is your local application.  You can close your link to the game, but this does not effect the game or anyone else viewing the game.  Once you have closed the link to the game, you can not reconnect.

The only interaction you can have with the game is with the chat function.  I have not tested this.  My preference is that the chat would be enabled only for game players, not spectators, but I don't know if that is how the application works.

This opens a couple of possibilities.  For one, we can treat this League games as spectator sports, and watch the game unfold.

For another, if anyone has the software to record the game, they can link in and create the recording without disturbing the game.

Now I am more motivated to actually open up that port so I can join in.

Imagine: the final game in the League is viewed by many-many people, like it is ice hockey world cup final between Russia and Canada :D

Who will handle the negotiations with the local TV networks?

Who will we get to do the colour commentary?

Does this mean we need to put a time limit on placing tiles and meeples?  Otherwise, some games might be as lively as watching paint dry......

You don't need to open a port to join, either to watch or play.  Opening a port is only required when you are hosting the game.

I'm sure Wil Wheaten will put his hand up.

I've been toying with the idea of suggesting some sort of Carcassonne Central World Cup which would be in the style of a knock-out competition with a final, semi-finals, quarter-finals and hopefully a round before the quarters if we could find 16 people interested enough to play. I'd definitely want to watch the final of that!

With regards the chat function, I don't think it works if you're not playing. When I've hosted games that I haven't taken part in I haven't been able to type anything anyway.

Also, recording is relatively straight forward. I've recorded all of my games so far although I haven't done much with any of the recordings. I use something called simply "Screen Recorder" which I kick off before the first game and then just leave it running until I've finished playing.

OK so I've put some thoughts down about the Carcassonne World Cup and have started a separate thread so as not to distract from Rob's post.

If you're interested, please let me know along with any ideas/ thoughts/ suggestions you may have as to how it should be run on the following thread:

Does this record the entire screen, or only the JCloisterZone window?

The whole screen. So it's not ideal but if JCloisterZone is the only thing running then it doesn't make much of a difference.

I expect that most of us run JCZ full screen - and wish for larger screens!   :)

My HTPC is attached to a 40" Samsung TV, and has JCZ installed.  Next round of games, I am going to use that when possible.  Having a good overview of the game while still seeing details may be a bit of a competitive advantage...or at least make it quicker to see all options and allow quicker decisions.

As for audio networking, there are several free programs out there. Mumble, Ventrilo and a third which I forgot the name of. Used these three when I used to do raids in online gaming.

Video, hmm. Youtube offers live-stream last time I checked. If that works there's a whole world out there that can tune in!
