Good introductory Worker Placement games
« on: July 13, 2015, 10:38:01 PM »
Hey, I did just get back from a game night at a local gamestore and I tried out the store demo for Tzolk'en and I liked how it played but it felt a bit too meaty for my niece and other family members.  Is there any good Worker Placement games I should look into for a 'first' one for my family and I?  My niece is aged 7 but she can handle something like Quarantine pretty easily (Action Point modular board game) but kinda struggled with Blueprints (kinda 3d yahtzee, she kept on making 'rainbow' buildings where she never went for any of the awards or that high of a building score.  She kinda quit the game after the second of 3 rounds).  So, yeah, any suggestions?  I'm not against doing a PNP game if that's the best option, though Agricola did catch my eye (as well as the family ruleset)

I recently played Orléans. Mechanics are pretty simple but there's some interesting choices to make. You might want to check it out. I guess it's not a traditional worker placement because you build a bag at the same time.

Not sure, if you can call this "Worker Placement", because you are rather placing the working places, but I think the mechanism is rather similar, and it is a great game, quickly and easy to learn, but still deep in game play: Power Grid.

Power Grid officially is played from 12-years old, though my 7-years old son already plays it (for now - without auction). Another great game is Kingdom Builder. The most thing I like in this game is great variability - every game is completely different.

Skipping the auctions is probably a good idea for playing with kids. They might get troubles, estimating, how far to go.
