Took me all evening, but I finally got an aggregated list of the latest threads from BoardGameGeek showing on the forum home page. It took three attempts before I was successful, and it doesn't help that there are 336 different feeds pertaining to Carcassonne including expansions and spin-offs. I'm quite happy with the end result because it's very configurable and easy to expand when more expansions and spin-offs are released.

I'm not familiar with that fan-made expansion, but normally you can only deploy one follower per turn. To deploy to both features would require using the Phantom expansion.

The Complete Annotated Rules is the best to look at. It explains the differences between HiG and RGG (and eventually Z-Man, who are making changes also) and clarifies issues that are not addressed by the published rules.

I thought about that, but it's very hard to come up with ideas for the character images. If anybody has ideas, please post them here. Otherwise I'll end up doing things like GQ11 in the style of the River box.

I haven't played any Catan expansions yet, but Cities & Knights looks the most interesting to me.
Biggest problem I have with Catan is getting blocked on all sides. I'd be inclined to add the 6-player expansion even in a four-player game.

I can confirm that those two expansions are slightly different from the regular Carcassonne tiles. All tiles have a bit of a grid-like pattern from the linen texture, but the grid is more pronounced in those two expansions. Sounds like you got genuine tiles.
