News and Events / Another little meet up!
« on: August 14, 2022, 06:07:10 AM »
Following the success of other meet ups, and as we all had stuff for each other, it was time for another meet up!

@unclewill , @MMike and myself met up in central London for a day of board gaming, chatting and of course exchanging stuff!

Before MMike arrived, Unclewill and i started with a nice game of Radlands.

This game is all about making an aggressive strategy towards the destruction of your opponent's bases. The cards look beautiful, and the Super Deluxe version seems like definitely the best version to get! I made a bold move near the end (the literal and figurative Nuclear option), and Will had just the right cards to punish me for it, helping him win the game!

Once MMike had arrived, we decided on a nice little starter; Art Robbery

A little game i picked up in the Netherlands last year. We played a gang of museum robbers who needed to divide their loot. You can take loot from the middle, or steal it away from others. A guard dog can help you to keep your stuff, but then again it's not a loyal dog...
I managed to play my strategy right, have enough alibis at the end of the game, and won!

We continued with a game of Carcassonne!
We found a spin off that i hadn't played in ages, and the others had not played at all; Carcassonne Mayflower (aka New World, A Carcassonne Game)

We liked the art on the tiles, which is very detailed, and the premise of trying to reach further and further west. The Surveyors managed to push us further west, although MMike managed to finish a big city all the way on the East coast (New York), which was left abandoned by Will earlier in the game.
We battled a bit over the fields, but all had in mind that they would be as powerful as the fields in normal Carcassonne. In this game they can be strong, but not as strong. Unclewill did well though, scoring over 30 points from them, moving him from last to second place! My lead was big enough, making me win my second game in a row!

The next game was a quick/relaxed game; Love Letter
I really like this game, and managed to convince the others to play. We discussed some other versions of the game, which have made me interested in trying to find out more about them!

This time, Will was relentless, and managed to win by a landslide! MMike did very well, but I had no momentum in this game so i had no change whatsoever :)

After some snacks and more chatting, we decided we needed to play a game of good 'ol Carcassonne!
Unclewill and MMike had not seen/played C3 yet, and i just happened to have brought a copy with me!
MMike being the creative artist he is, brought some hand made and 3d printed meeple sets. Including Oreo meeple, Cheese meeple and meeples with weapons inside them!
We decided to play with these sets during the game, as they looked too amazing not to!

It was a decently nice game, with not that many blocks or joins. Unclewill managed to get a 2nd meeple into a decent city, although MMike blocked that city, so it would not be completed.
I managed to sneak in a farmer into Unclewill's field, which he only managed about 4 turns later, but he did manage to block my second meeple from joining the field.
But it was not enough to win, as i had a lead just big enough to win this one

A great afternoon of games and catching up! Great to see you guys, and we'll try to do it soon again!

This morning we heard that the BGG Geekmarket will be closing from the 1st of September.
By the end of September, all the historical data will be gone from it.

Not only was the BGG Geekmarket great for buying/selling stuff, it was also an often used reference for prices.

To retain some sort of reference, i have done a data scrape from the BGG Geekmarket, and have made a file that can be found in the download section here .
This contains most(?) of the historical sales data of Carcassonne items on the BGG Geekmarket.

There might be some things missing, but at least it's a good start as reference document :)
Do note that some sales might be looking weird, due to bundle sales, as well as some items are not differentiated between C1, C2 or C3.

There will be a Carcassonne event in the old City of Carcassonne, on the 10th and 11th of September 2022!

Hans im Gluck have announced a 2-day event, with the presentation/release of the Fog over Carcassonne, and a Meet&Greet with Klaus-Jurgen Wrede

Main points on the announcement:

- Presentation of the new Fog over Carcassonne
- Meet & Greet with Klaus-Jurgen Wrede
- 'Special' Carcassonne games and a wide range of other games
- Crossbow shooting
- Caligraphy
- Medieval sword fighting for kids
- Free entry to the main event, some further activities in the city might require entry (i would imagine this is the castle for example)

General / My trip to Carcassonne (Blog)
« on: March 30, 2022, 12:57:11 PM »
A while back, i was talking with Dan, Tom and Rich on Discord, and i believe Rich mentioned how surprisingly few people had gotten the badge 'Played Carcassonne in Carcassonne'
That got me thinking, and being cheeky, i checked flights from the UK to Carcassonne...

You never guess what happened next?!

So, me and my partner booked flights and an AirBnB, to go to Carcassonne! I hear it's nice there, so let's hope for the best!

We'll be leaving tomorrow early morning, and i thought it could be nice to make a little blog of our trip and tour through the city :)

I'll also be posting about it on the Carcassonne Museum Instagram, so let's see how the trip goes, and if i can find some hidden treasure there!

Quizzes, Puzzles and Challenges / Carcassonne C1 Rule Trivia Time!
« on: February 25, 2022, 07:15:39 AM »
When going through some rule books today, i noticed a nice bit of trivia!

There is a mistake in the rulebooks for almost all RGG English releases and almost all 999 Dutch releases of C1. This was not updated/corrected until ZMG took over the English distribution, and for 999 it was when they released their C2 box.
To add to the fun; in all the C1 releases from Devir, which had both Spanish and Portuguese rules, the error is in the Portuguese rules, but it is corrected in the Spanish rules...

I was not aware of this, as I guess I've always overlooked it. I wondered if this was a known thing in the community..

So I would like to propose this poll. Please vote above which option you think is the error in all these rules

Now there is the honour system; no peeking!!
I'll make sure to share the right answer in 1 week time, on the 4th of March :)

News and Events / NK Carcassonne 2022 (Dutch Championships)
« on: February 22, 2022, 01:39:19 AM »
The NK Carcassonne 2022 will be held on the 24th of April 2022, in Veldhoven.

Entry to the tournament itself is free, but you do have to register and pay entry for the convention where it's held (Zuiderspel).
You can sign up here.

Maximum of 256 players, playing in the following format:
- 3 rounds of 3,4 or 5 player games (depending on the amount of players in the tournament)
- Depending on amount of players at a table, points are scored:
                - 1st = 5 points
                - 2nd = 3 points
                - 3rd = 2 points
                - 4th = 1 point
                - 5th = 0 points
A draw will see points for the places added up and divided by the amount of players (so if 2 people draw for 3rd, they see (2+1)/2= 1.5 points each)
- 45 mins max playtime
                - If after 45 mins the game has not finished, the round is finished giving everyone equal amount of turns, before end scoring is initiated

After the 3 rounds, the top 16 move on to the finals
- All finals (eight/quarter/semi/full) are 1v1 knockouts
- The winner gets to represent The Netherlands in Essen for the World Championships

- Games are played as per the standard Dutch rules, with the following clarifications/changes:
                - You draw a tile at the end of your turn (you don't have to show it to your opponent(s)
                - The end of the table is the end of the field (it doesn't say, but this does imply that features are not completed by the end of the table, just left incomplete)
                - Small cities are 4 points, not 2 (don't know why they are clarifying a rule that got changed in their rulebooks as well back in 2002, but it seems for some reason that 999 is still                      confused by this)
                - Farmers are laid flat
                - Farms are counted as per majority of farmers. The player(s) with the most farmers get 3 points per completed city. This rule is different from the Dutch rules, but this was changed in other countries and used on the WC, so we use this
(I actually have commented on 999's post about this, as this is not the case, and was changed in the NL rules in 2002 just like everywhere else, so quite sloppy from them i'd say)

Other notes:
- Players are expected to know the rules of the base game
- You cannot talke to players, or otherwise help them, during the games
- You don't have to have the Dutch nationality to enter this tournament, however you then won't be able to represent NL in Essen
- Minimum age for participants is 8 year

The schedule for the day:
10.00 – 10.45 Aankomst deelnemers
10.45 – 11.25 1e round
11.25 – 11.40 Break
11.40 – 12.20 2e round
12.20 – 12.35 Break
12.35 – 13.15 3e round
13.15 – 13.45 Break
13.45 – 14.15 Eight finales
14.15 – 14.45 Quarter finales
14.45 – 15.15 Semi finales

« on: February 01, 2022, 04:01:34 PM »
I noticed today some new boxes available on Cundco.
Similar to the boxes we've seen before, but with updated graphics, similar to the latest big box:

General / Big Box 7: A brand new Big Box with an already long history?!
« on: January 18, 2022, 07:02:45 AM »
The new Big Box has been out for a while now, but with some interesting details!
When it was first released in France and Greece, we quickly noticed several errors in the landscape on the front of the box.
2 tiles were laid incorrectly, having roads not connecting and ending in nothingness...
Also it had several figures placed incorrectly, such as an Abbot on a road, Mage and Witch on completed features, etc.
The German version that has been released, also saw these errors. See the 1st picture.

Updates have been made.
The Dutch, Czech and Italian releases have seen some updates to the visuals. The tiles with roads have been corrected, however the figures are still placed incorrectly.
See the 2nd picture for the release of 999 Games.

Those first 2 versions have been printed like this. My German and French versions have all the errors, and my Czech version has seen the updates.
There has been a new image released by the German publisher Hans im Gluck, which shows all errors corrected.
See the 3rd picture.

When this fully correct one will be released, we'll have to find out. Perhaps once the current stock has gone, reprints will be corrected?

Update:
Nice little tidbit; the promo pictures from HiG on different websites who sell the German BB7, have an image of the 2nd version. So tiles updated, figures still incorrect:

However when you order it, you get the one with all mistakes (as shown in the first picture)

General / TGBCW—August UK Meet-Up; My journey to my first ever KFC
« on: August 29, 2021, 02:47:14 AM »
So whilst talking on discord a while back, the topic of KFC came up.
I mentioned that I actually never had KFC before, which caused a bit of an outrage...
Dan and Decar decided it was time to plan a meet up to ensure I would get the KFC I deserve. Rich was quick to join, and The Great Board Gaming (Free?) Big Chicken Weekend Great Britain (abbreviated to TGBGBCWGB for your convenience) was born!

So yesterday we met up in Oxford and after the necessary delays on the road, we all managed to get to a pub and start some nice games!
Game 1: Spicey
Rich was quick to start us off with a card game of Spicey.
A fairly easy game to learn (although we didn't use the red cards?) And fun to play! In the beginning we were all a bit hesitant to challenge eachother, which helped me win the first round. Tom won the second round, and we got a great game in our collective minds now!
(I forgot to take a picture)

Game 2: The Crew
I hadn't played this one before either, but boy did I like it!
Simple enough to understand, it's a game of winning tricks. However, the game adds an element of teamwork, with missions to complete and a narrative to follow. We won a few and lost less, so overall I'd say we won!

Game 3: Bandito
As I said on Discord; I'm pretty sure Dan got this one out just to annoy Rich.
It was a fairly quick game and we did enjoy it. I again forgot to take a picture though

KFC Time!!!

This was it!
For some reason I ended up being first of the 4 to order, which ended up with me just randomly tapping on the order screen and hoping for the best.
I was not disappointed with my order

I think we all enjoyed our lunch

Change of Venue!
When we arrived, my gf decided to head into town, and soon after texted a picture of this place called Geek Retreat. We decided to see what it was, and it was actually a gaming place. They have lots of space/tables available and not a bad collection of games to play.

As we brought most of our own, we didn't need too many of them, but still. You don't pay for the table, but they ask to order food/drinks regularly.
So we got some drinks and time for the inevitable...

Game 4: Carcassonne Amazonas
As they had Amazonas there, we figured we should make sure we got a game of Carcassonne played! Rich confessed he has it, but never played it! :o
So we went through the rules, and got to playing!
Decar's boat got ahead down the river quite early, but all of us managed to catch up. Rich went sailing ahead to secure first down the river, but it was in vain against Tom's jungle-management. He ran away with that victory

Game 5: The Fort
Tom pulled this game out, which said on the box to be 20-40 mins.
That probably was meant for the rules explanations, as that took a while.
Towards the end we got a bit better with our turns, but I think we all need another shot at the game in order to work more on strategies.

Dan's departure
As Dan had to leave, we all went back to the parking to exchange all the stuff we had for eachother. Decar was the big winner with a big box full of goodies, but I think we were all very happy with our new stuff!
I got 1 of each new bags, one of which is going in my Carc20 box; it feels right.
I also got a second edition of the Russian drawstring bag. Decar ordered a bunch a few years ago, and now was the right time to deliver  ;D

More Gaming! Game 6: Forbidden Island
We swapped Dan for my gf, and the four of us went back to Geek Retreat for food and more games!
Whilst waiting for our burgers, we played a Forbidden Island! We all had played it before, so we went through it fairly quickly. In the end, we didn't win, but we had fun; that's what counts!

Game 6: Carcassonne
We saw we had about 20 mins to spare before we had to get the bus back, so figured we should play a game we all know and are familiar with....
Carcassonne it is!
We played a fast game, finishing very quickly! We mostly focused on our own things, except for Rich who joined a few farms and shared a nice city with my gf for a good amount of points.
No surprise he won this one by a lot!
Fun fact: By my second to last turn, I was on 0 points, only to score a 9 points road. During end scoring however, I got about 50 more points and ended in 3rd

Overall, a great day, with some nice food!
Really nice seeing you guys again, and as we said, we will have to plan TGBGBCWGB2 soon!

General / Carcassonne: Carc Central Edition?
« on: June 02, 2021, 12:42:11 PM »
I wish for an exclusive Carcassonne Central edition of the Carcassonne game.

So... Be careful what you wish for...

After i posted my wish, Decar actually granted it!
Granted. But unfortunately 73 people want to take part, and only 70 tiles get submitted.  But at least the rules are consistent.

But we started talking on our CarcC discord channel, and several of us got more and more enthusiastic about actually making something like that happen!
So it's still early days in the idea, but i'm thinking the following:
- We have people who are interested to join in sign up
- Everyone gets assigned 1 or more tile(s) from the standard base game (amount depending on the amount of participants)
- Everyone may recreate their tile(s) artistically, with their own input. This can be a simple decoration, a personal memory of Carcassonne or a nice Easter Egg to Carcassonne Central
- For now, no additional rules for the tiles (otherwise you'd get 72 expansions basically)

As i am personally not great with the actual art portion of it (designing the tiles, actually printing them, etc), i think it would be good if we can have a guide available from our forum ranks who can help people with their design. This can be either by posting a guide, or sharing templates, or even going so far as to actually making the design come to life. (note, this is tbd, as i can't offer that myself so would be depending on if someone can/wants to do so and in what capacity).

We can start with the aim for a digital version of it, which can be available for people on the forum to download/print&play.
I'd love to organise an actual printed version of it (even alone due to the fact that i can't print myself), but that is for later.
Also, and this would be especially if we can organise a printed run, Dan came up with the idea of having the contributing members sign a scoreboard. Details tbd, but it can be something we pass around, so everyone who contributes shares in making this a reality.

So.... Dreams of a madman? Or maybe even a visionary (i wouldn't go that far)?
Anyone interested in joining this project?

Reviews & Session Reports / Detective; A Modern Crime Board Game
« on: September 29, 2018, 09:38:34 AM »
My girlfriends Dad came round today with his latest find:
Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game!

This is a Coorperative game, where the player(s) take the role of a Detective that will need to look in to several cases.
There are 5 cases that come with the game, and Portal has announced a 6th case soon to be released as a mini-expansion. (This 6th case was previously only available at conventions. Many reviewers could use this to review the game without giving away spoilers for the main game).

All 5 cases are stand-alone, but ther is an overall narative that connects all cases! This narative is not immediatly clear, but will be revealed throughout the 5 cases.

The setup of the game requires the contents of the box, and a laptop/tablet/smart device to connect to the online database to lookup additional information, like personal files, questionnaires, evidence and to file and match fingerprints and other evidence. This is required! You can't play without it.

And the database:

Pen and paper can be used to make notes, and this is also recommended!

For every case you get a certain amount of days to investigate, and every action you take can cost you time throughout the day. Moving locations, interrogating, researching can all cost time. You can work overtime, but this will cause you stress that can cost you in the long run!

We spend about 2,5 hours on the first case, writing down about 4 sheets of notes, and tried to make a mind map that shows how everything is connected.

There is a lot of opportunities to look further in to things, and you are encouraged to researched some historical facts and figures!

After the set time has passed, you have to write up a final report online. This consist of a number of questions that you have to answer with what you found. With this, you will get a final score that will determine if you successfully closed the case. There is not really a clear way of telling if you're ready for the final report; you just have to be confident ;)
After the final report, you can either reset the case to play it again with others, or see the story epilogue and findings.

We really enjoyed this game and definately recommend it! 2,5 hours on just case 1, with 4 more cases to come :D

Official Rules / Pendants on 2 tiles for the Abbey&Mayor
« on: January 21, 2018, 06:16:57 AM »
Hi everyone!
We were playing a nice little game of Carcassonne today (I lost, my girlfriend won by 16 points and i dont wanna talk about it  ;)),  and we've been discussing these 2 tiles...
Main question:
Do the pendants count for both cities on the tiles?
We've got our thoughts on it, but wanted to ask here to see what people would say :)
