General / Cathedrals in Germany Defect?
« on: September 15, 2021, 08:35:51 AM »
Hello everyone,
I have noticed that my Cathedrals in Germany tiles have noticeably lighter backs than my other tiles.  This makes them identifiable from the back when drawing them out of anything other than a bag.  Does anyone else have this same issue with these tiles?  I'm considering ordering a second set of Cathedrals in Germany with the hopes that the replacement won't have this issue, but I won't do so if the whole run of them had this problem.

Other Games / Re: Carcassonne and Catan

I'm an avid player of both Carcassonne and Catan and have all the expansions in the most recent art editions for both .  In terms of complexity, I think Carcassonne and Catan are roughly comparable.  There are a number of differences between Carcassonne and Catan of course.  The most obvious difference is that Carcassonne is more or less a map building game, while Catan is a colony building game with the map being decided from the outset. Another difference between the two is that Catan requires negotiation between players as they trade resources with each other, whereas in Carcassonne you mostly just do your own thing and interacting with other players isn't very important.  Actually, the trading aspect of Catan is why it requires at least three players to play properly, while Carcassonne only requires two.  Another difference is that smart playing early on in Catan can create a momentum which will help you later on in the game, and there is definitely an aspect of success begetting success in the game as you develop your economic engine.  Carcassonne games don't really involve this kind of momentum and it's a little easier to change the outcome of the game at the end than it is in Catan.

In the end, I think I probably play Carcassonne slightly more than Catan just because I can play it at home with my wife without having to have another friend over, but overall, I think both games are fantastic, and I highly recommend getting both.

Japanese buildings can still be obtained pretty easily, but not from Cundco.  Japanese copies of the base game (called Carcassonne J) all include the Japanese buildings mini-expansion.

I live in Japan, and this was what first got me into Carcassonne.  It's too bad they don't sell any expansions here though.  I had to import all of mine.

On a side note, I have been to all of the Japanese buildings depicted on the special tiles except for the Giant Buddha in Kamakura, and Horyuji temple, which I don't think is a particularly unique structure.  I actually used to live just a five minute walk away from Goryokaku park, the star shaped fort, and have been there more times than I can count.

I got a copy of Carcassonne the City around 10 years ago at Sci-Fi City.  At the time, I was interested in Carcassonne, but I was a little hesitant to buy into the main game because I was worried I might go expansion crazy (which is exactly what happened when I bought into the main game a couple years ago), so I thought a self-contained spin-off like the City would be much better.  The set I got was the coveted Wooden Box edition, which I did not realize was so highly sought after until many years later.  I don't play it as often as the base game, but it is very fun and many people seem to think it is one of the best spinoffs, ranked maybe just below Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers.

Yes, that's right, the colossal set doesn't include the tokens and miniatures.  There are a number of backers who have complained about this.  They just want the colossal set and not the normal set, but it looks like Bezier Games doesn't want to do that because the logistics of managing all these different sets (Colossal set with token, set without tokens, set with moats with tokens, set with moats without tokens etc. ) would be much more difficult to do.

Thanks for the info, Dirk.  I just made a pledge for the royal edition.  I was intrigued by the colossal edition too, but I just don't have room for that in my house, especially since I anticipate I'll usually only play the regular edition.

No, this isn't true and is likely a misunderstanding borne from a spelling error.  Meeples are protected by the fairy, but not ferries.  Meeples can also be protected by staying in the castles from the Bridges, Castles, and Bazaars expansion.

I'm personally hoping that the Carcassonne 20th anniversary edition is like the Catan 25th anniversary edition - pieces with unique paint jobs and some helpful things like sleeves and trays, but no exclusive expansions.  It's bad enough that I had to get second copies of the base game and first and second expansions when I got the big box just to get the 7 mini expansions.  Don't do this to me again!  Also, I really hope it's not Carcassonne 3.0.  2.0 looks great and doesn't need to be updated, plus it hasn't been out for very long.

General / Dized App
« on: September 11, 2020, 06:34:47 PM »
So I saw on Cundco today that they are promoting a new app called "Dized" that helps explain the rules to new players in an easy to understand way.  Has anyone else tried it?

My take on it is not positive.  You have to pay for the tutorial videos, of which there are already plenty of free ones available on Youtube, and the rule set for Carcassonne does not include the rules for any of the expansions.  It doesn't even have the rules for the river or the abbot, which are packed in with all copies of the base game now.  Even worse, every time I try to read the rules, the app crashes on me, so for me, this app is a total dud in every possible way.

Wow, that's ridiculous.  I'm in Japan and I'm kind of surprised I got my package so much quicker considering that Japan is the most draconian country in the world right now regarding people entering the country.  They are refusing entry to everyone who doesn't have Japanese citizenship, and are even turning away people who have permanent residency in the country.

I just got my copy of the Carcassonne Big Box from Cundco yesterday.  It took well over a month to come in, I guess because of the Chinese Coronavirus and everything.  Anyway, now I have all the major and minor expansions for Carcassonne 2.0!  The only things I am missing are the Spiel promo tiles, which I don't really care about.

I'm kind of amazed how wrong some of these predictions were.  Now that a 2.0 version of the halflings has been released, I think it's possible that any of these other things could released at some point in the future, besides the catapult, obviously.

A few questions:

Will a kindle version be available at some point?  (I only read kindle books nowadays.)

How extensively does this book cover strategy for the expansions?  Does it have any information about the mini-expansions?
