Carcassonne-on-Tour will go on tour again this year 2015.
As the years before, Carcassonne-on-Tour needs a new mini expansion.
This year is the theme: "Burgen in Deutschland" / "Castles in Germany".
The plan is one or two mini-expansions with each 6 new landscape tiles with a castle graphics, simular to the mini from last year.
The mini from last year was "Klöster in Deutschland"(Monasteries in Germany) published by HiG/CundCo and later the license partner 999-Games published the mini "De Kloosters" (monasteries in the Netherlands and Belgium).
Udo Schmitz (Carcassonne-on-Tour) has asked the members at the Carcassonne-Forum (CarcF) if we can search for nice castles in Germany and create an opinion poll.
At the CarcF forum we decided to look for around 1-3 castles for each region of Germany (North, South, West, East and Middle) - total 10 castles. Now we have finished the surching and have started the opinion poll for each region.
Here is the link to the topic at CarcF:
Suche nach Mini für Carcassonne-on-Tour 2015 (Searching for mini for Carcassonne-on-Tour) (http://carcassonne-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=155&t=2430)
Reply #118 - Link to the links for the opinion polls (http://carcassonne-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=155&t=2430&start=105#p25690)
Reply #119 - Link to the excel table with all the castles in Germany (http://carcassonne-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=155&t=2430&start=105#p25696)
The opinion polls will run until 30 01 2015.
(Nord/North - Süd/South - West/West - Ost/East - Mitte/Middle - Burg/Castle)

Will this be done in old or new graphics?
-
The plan is one or two mini-expansions with each 6 new landscape tiles with a castle graphics, simular to the mini from last year.
So they are actual tiles, no replacement for the castles of "Castles, Bridges & Bazaars"?
-

I don't know.

In the Expansion "Castles, Bridges & Bazaars" are tokens with a castle graphics, but there is no landscape tile with a castle graphics on it.
-
Yes, I know that. That's why I asked, if it is confirmed, that there will be new tiles. Because the "German Cloisters" were supposed to replace the monasteries from the original game, it might have been, that the "German Castles" should do the same with the tokens from the expansion. (Plus add a little rule to it.)
However, tiles or tokens, I would suppose, that there will be just the castles on the tiles. So, although the stile of artwork from Mattheus and Pätzke are considerably different, it might very likely fit into both versions. (Hence the lack of any blue or red towers, ect.)
-
I loved the idea of the monastery minis and I love this idea too (also hoping that it will expand outside Germany - I would love French castles, Spanish castles etc). For the artwork, the actual castles themselves can probably be designed in a way that suits both the old and new artwork, but it's the field colour and the roads leading up to the castles (if there are any) that will be the key thing. Obviously, I am hoping that the fields/roads match the old artwork rather than the new.
-
AGAIN a new mini expansion?! :o
Woah.. so many to get... O_o hard to keep up..
The little collector mouse sitting on my shoulder, who usually tells me that I NEEED to get every expansion, is now on crack... Swinging wildly from my earlobe and yelling GET IT, GET IT!!... :o
-
I don't have any insider knowledge, so the following is pure speculation:
I suspect that the new German castles will not be used to replace the old castles. For one thing, it would be weird to replace a token with a tile, and not everybody owns that expansion (unlike the replacement of cloisters with monasteries, where everyone can do that). The new castles may still act like the old ones, but I bet there will be some other little tweak to the rules, too.
Maybe a defense mechanic to combat the overpowered and widely used catapult? ;D
-
Maybe you have to use the old castle token, to aim with them with the catapult on the new castle tiles. :P
-
the mini will have 6 new landscape tiles with castle graphics.
A landscape tile with castle graphics is not a castle token.
-
That's a lot of castles to choose from!
Hope there's a GB Castles expansion too!
-
We German were only looking for castles in Germany and we created a nice excel table with many castles in our own country.
So, if you like to have a chance for castles in the UK or in France..., please look for castles in your country... >:D
-
The real question is are these castles medieval castles or castles from any era, and are they going to be rendered in their medieval state or in their modern state. Decar's case with Caerphilly Castle is a great unintentional point on this matter: the castle clearly did not always have its famous leaning tower, thus how would it be portrayed as a Carcassonne tile? I imagine most German castles are the same, with many in various states of decay or heavily modified from its medieval form. Just a concern of mine; I don't want Carcassonne to fully embrace the mistake made with Darmstadt and enter the contemporary world without remorse.

Wow! You really like Warwick Castle. ;)
I like it too, but my favourite is Caernarvon.
Haha - ah yes! ;D
As much as I like Warwick, the second link was meant to be Bodiam, oops! - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodiam_Castle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodiam_Castle)
-
I like it too, but my favourite is Caernarvon.
I like Caernarfon a lot too - I went there in Oct 2013 as part of my brother's 40th birthday celebration (we stayed in a cottage in Wales for a few days).
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caernarfon_Castle was on my list but didn't want to pick all the good Welsh castles and show favourtism ;)
Dover was in my running too, but was getting it confused with another one on the South coast and couldn't find it :(y)
-
My favorites are in Wales, too..
Raglan - First castle I ever went to as a kid, with family. First trip to Wales back in the 80's. Every time I find myself over there, I stop by there whenever I can.
Chepstow - Stopped at this one on the last trip. Personally, I love how it's built on the cliffs of the River Wye.
-
If there is to be a UK edition maybe it should be Scottish, Welsh, English and northern Irish mixed. So it's fair for everyone.
-
I really appreciate that Udo gives the community an opportunity to help decide which castles will be included in this expansion. In traditional fashion, I expect we won't find out how the expansion works until the last possible moment.
I hope that we'll see more castle expansions from the other publishers. I feel a little more confident about 999 Games, since they participated in the monastery expansion. Of the areas covered by Z-Man Games, France and the UK are obvious choices for castle expansions. Though there are some castles in North America, few of them are very old, and none of them date back to the middle ages.
Just when my collection was completed... except I'm not surprised by this. The release cycle for new mini expansions is fairly well-established now.

Wow, those would look cool on tiles. :)
-
Burg Konradsheim deserves a tile for hosting the annual fan meetings.
I was under the impression that Castles was to be a six tile expansion?
Keep the discussion going for the British Isles. Kalinda is doubtful, but she's going to see if management is interested. I think it's safe to say that, based on what happened with the Dutch/Belgian monastery expansion, there will be the same or more demand for expansions covering the British Isles as well as France itself.
-
I have splitt the topic - now we have some thoughts for castles in the UK as an own topic.
Thoughts: UK Castles for a Mini-Expansion (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1523.0)
As always - each time when I splitt here at CarcC a topic - not all the postings land in the correct new topic - sorry. I have to say - the software for the forum at CarcF is more easy for me - it is in German. ;D - and it works easier than the software from SMF.

The mini with the "German Castles"
We have some more updates. I've called today with Udo Schmitz (Carcassonne-on-Tour).
1st point:
Udo Schmitz and Klaus-Jürgen Wrede say thanks to the community that we all worked hard to find a result for the "German Castles".
2nd point:
Udo called with the owners of the castles. The owners were very pleased about this action and are happy to be a part of it.
a definitly YES from these castles:
- Burg Bentheim
- Burg Rieneck
- Wartburg
- Burg Konradsheim
- Festung Königsstein
3rd point:
Burg Eltz is the last of the 6 castles for the mini expansion.
4th point:
the landscape tiles will be double landscape tiles.
-
Thanks Kettlefish - double landscape tiles - it's like the opposite of half tiles! ::)
-
4th point:
the landscape tiles will be double landscape tiles.

4th point:
the landscape tiles will be double landscape tiles.
Does this mean they are double the size of a normal tile? Or double-sided? Either way, they're not going to be something that can be drawn randomly. (Okay, you could draw double-sided tiles randomly from a bag, but not from all mechanisms like the tower.) And either way, I like it.
-

I like it too. So I guess you will get one of these double-tiles per player (or you could get 2-3 if you are playing with 3 or 2 players) and they won't be mixed in with the rest of the tiles - like the abbey.
-

nice - you have the same questions as the members at CarcF. >:D
I said double landscape tiles - not double sided...
-
So 2 landscapes on 1 tile.. Like Grass and mountain?
-
I think she means it is the size of two tiles stuck together (next to each other). So a rectangular tile twice the length of current tiles with the same width. Or four halflings put together :)
-
I'd say with the recent release of the Halflings, tiles that are double wide is the next obvious step. Maybe someday they'll finally release a copy of The Count as one tile. I've been hoping for that for years.
-
Can't you buy that somewhere? I am sure I have seen it.
-
This is the closest thing I could find:
http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=845.msg9659#msg9659 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=845.msg9659#msg9659)
I was told that there is no official release of The Count as one tile.
-

Nice! :(y) :(y)

I gues it might be something like the School. Two seperate tiles, one image.
-
Kettlefish what do you know? Or arent you allowed to tell?
-
I've called with Udo Schmitz today - now I can tell you some officially information:
The graphics artist for the double landscape tiles is Doris Matthäus.

Great news!

The graphics artist for the double landscape tiles is Doris Matthäus.
The old artwork is still alive!! :)

Im still wondering what they mean with double landscapes :-[

Imagine the two school tiles. Then imagine that instead of two separate tiles, this is just one tile (ie two tiles joined at one edge). That's what I think it is.

I have some more information about this mini-expansion
"Burgen in Deutschland" (Castles in Germany)
for the members of our community - see the workshop...
Link follows...

I've posted at BGG that we are talking about this mini-expansion:
Mini-Expansion - Castles in Germany (Burgen in Deutschland) (https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1342589/mini-expansion-castles-germany-burgen-deutschland)
-
Great news:
The mini-expansion is already at HiG/CundCo. They are working hard to unpack the packages for the CundCo shop.
And this night it will go online at CundCo. That is the plan.
-
yeeee!!! :P

Already ordered (2 copies)!
Does anyone know if the PDF of the German rules is available anywhere yet? I'll be doing my standard English translation for the rules, as soon as the German file is available.
-
I don't have the rules.
At HiG homepage aren't the rules online yet
-
Just order the castles (with a 1$ egg, yes, i know, they say it's just a joke, but are we sure? :) ) so what's next on the Carcassonne world? I hope there'll be some expansion before the Star Wars stand alone
-

my guess is that there will be something big expansion like is going to happen with Spielbox, kettlefish has some secret information on that.
Further i think the 10th expansion will be something they work on..
-
HiG at their Twitter page:
https://twitter.com/HiG_Verlag/status/581705460673282048
At that picture you can see all the 6 castles.
the left side:
- Burg Bentheim
- Burg Eltz
- Festung Königstein
the right side:
- Burg Konradsheim
- Wartburg
- Burg Rieneck
(Burg = castle - Burgen = castles - Festung = fortress)
-
Wow! Those are really cool... I haven't played Carcassonne for a while now (and I'm quite behind in expansions) but they are very tempting nonetheless...
-
I Contacted 999 games today, the dutch supplier of carcassonne, and asked them if they would make a dutch version of the German Castles like they did with the cloisters.. They say its not on their schedule yett, but, they say there is a possibility that it will happen in the future..
-
At CarcF we have now the German Rules for the Castles in Germany "Burgen in Deutschland.

I've quickly translated the rules below:
Castles in Germany
This mini-expansion with 6-known castles from Germany allows each player to become Lords or Ladies naturally.
Setting Up
Each player takes a Castle of choice (with 2 or 3 players, each player can take 2 castles tiles). Alternatively, a player mixes the castles and assigns 1 or 2 castles to each player. The players then place their Castles in front of them. This expansion is designed for the basic game Carcassonne whose rules remain in place! The changes and exceptions, we will show you now:
1. Landscape tiles
Instead of drawing and placing a landscape tile the player may choose one of his castles. It should be noted that a castle tile may NOT touch another castle tile directly or corner to corner (diagonal). The usual rules for placement of landscape tiles apply.
2. Placing a Meeple
After the player has placed their castle, this player may place one of their Meeple (like usual) onto this tile. The player may place their Meeple onto a road, a city, a field, or as a lord / lady of the castle when placed onto the Castle.
3. Triggering a Score
Evaluation of a finished castle
A castle is evaluated in the same manner as a Cloister. Once it is completely surrounded by tiles, the Lord of the Castle will get 12 points and the player takes their Meeple, as usual, back into their reserve.
At the end of the game, all tiles in the vicinity of an unfinished castle score 1 point. The Castle Tile itself, scores 2 points.
Ratings of Roads and cities around the castle.
If a road or a complete city that ends (or starts) on the Castle tile, those players get a bonus to their usual points. Each participating player scores 3 bonus points per participating Castle.
It does not matter whether the castles are occupied or not.
The Castles in Detail
Fortress Königstein (Saxony)
... is one of the biggest mountain fortresses in Europe. It is located in the Saxon Switzerland amid the Elbe Sandstone Mountains not far from Desden. It was built on a plateau 200 meters above the Elbe. About 750 years history have made an impressive ensemble of buildings of the late Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and 19th century military construction. Since 2008 there is a Carcassonne fan meeting at the Fortress annually in February.
Burg Konradsheim (NRW)
The water castle is located between Cologne and Bonn and is one of the few surviving late medieval castles in the Rhineland. It was first mentioned in documents in 1337. Knight Arnold of the Bush field is regarded as the builder. Today the castle is privately owned and can be rented for events. Since 2012 Carcassonne fan meeting place here annually in November.
Rieneck (Bavaria)
... Built around 1150 Castle Rieneck is located in Frankish Sinntal in Bavaria. Today, it is the Youth Castle of the Association of Christian Scouts and Guides. Particularly well known is the heart piece of the castle, known as the "Thick Tower", built in the 12th century with its historically unique Romanesque chapel wall, it is completely enclosed by the wall of the keep.
Burg Eltz (Eifel / Rhineland-Palatinate State)
... is considered the epitome of German knights castle. It is located in Elz Valley on the edge of the Eifel. She was never destroyed over time built at the beginning of the 12th century. Its history is rich in myths and events, important personalities and great art.
Wartburg (Thuringia)
The Wartburg is above Eisenach in Thuringia. It was founded in 1067 by Louis Springer, and is since 1999 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From May 1521 to March 1522, it rendered the controversial reformer Martin Luther, who had found refuge at Wartburg while translating the New Testament into German.
Burg Bentheim (Lower Saxony)
..is an early medieval castle surrounded by the city of Bad Bentheim in Lower Saxony. She is considered one of the largest and most beautiful castles in northwest Germany. First notices go back to documents from the 11th century. Today, the castle houses a museum and can be visited all year.
-
Thanks Kettle as always.
Merit for you Decar.
-
Just wondering, since the castles are to be played and scored like Cloisters would it not have made more sense to place the German/ Dutch monasteries on double tiles?
-
Instead of a Landshaftsplattchen to draw and create, the player may make one of his castles. It should be noted that a Burgplattchen may NOT rest against, directly or corner to corner another Burgplattchen . The usual rules when creating Landshaftplattchen apply.

But then you couldn't mix them with the standard tiles. Also if the Dutch/Belgian/German monasteries were double tiles, the scoring would be immense!

Thanks Kettlefish - I rushed it a bit - I've gone through a tidied it up some more; Thanks :)
-
I just noticed that the Castle Symbol on the tiles doesn't match those in the rules!
-
After the player has placed his castle, he can (like usual) place one of his Meeple onto this tile. He may put them on a road, a city, or a field, or as a lord / lady of the castle.

----------------------------
follower (Gefolgsmann) = Meeple
landscape tile (Landschaftskarte) = landscape tile (Landschaftsplättchen)
HiG likes to use new wórds for Carcassonne. We German have to learn new Words for the world of Carcassonne.
I have to say - I am so much happy >:(
-
Thanks kettlefish - I made a mess of that sentence.
I've just included descriptions of the Castles too. Very cool. I have to say the artwork looks even better up close.
Should I change the text to read Follower rather than Meeple?
I have 2 rule questions: Are Lords of Castles immune to being eaten by Dragons or captured by Towers?
-
I just noticed that the Castle Symbol on the tiles doesn't match those in the rules!
Yes.
In the introduction text for this mini HiG used "Burgfräulein" - in Germany we still have a "Burgfräulein" (princess) in the world of Carcassonne.
During the rules HiG used for castle landscape tile a short version castle tile. But HiG don't uses anymore "Karte" they uses "Plättchen" for a tile - castle tile = Burgplättchen
In German we still have a "Burgplättchen" - in the expansion Bridges, Castles & Bazaars.
The RGG BigBox uses for that castle token = castle tile.
In English we used for "Plättchen" the word "token"
example:
tunnel token, catapult token...
I am not sure how do I complete the dictionary German/English for the world of Carcassonne
I think it is time that Carcassonne goes to the sky... ;D
-
2. Placing a Meeple
After the player has placed his castle, they may place one of their Meeple (like usual) onto this tile. They may place it on a road, a city, or a field, or as a lord / lady of the castle onto the castle.
Please be careful with the use of words in plural like "they" may...
Only the player who place the castle tile may place one of his/her Meeple...
And only this player may place it on a road....
-
Please be careful with the use of words in plural like "they" may...
It's actually quite common in English to use the singular "they" as a substitute for "he or she", when the gender of the subject is not obvious (such as here, with "the player").
-
Thay might be right, but many of our users are not native speaking English.
I read it in plural, and at Carcassonne it should come a time with an expansion when all players can place a meeple at the same time on the same landscape tile...
I think we still have some examples - I remember one example:
- The Count of Carcassonne...
-
Interesting, my main question is whether the castles count as cloisters in all other sense of the rules. For example can you deploy an abbot, challenge with a cult or use it to escape from a besieged city?
The tiles look fantastic, I've ordered from Cundco today :)
-
Interesting, my main question is whether the castles count as cloisters in all other sense of the rules. For example can you deploy an abbot, challenge with a cult or use it to escape from a besieged city?
Please NO:P
-
Again thanks kettlefish, I had not considered how it could be interpreted by non-native players; and though it is a common usage, I agree that it is clearer to be very explicit. I have changed 'they' to 'the player'. I hope that's ok.
Edit: I've also been explicit about placing a Meeple.
I'll leave it a little longer for improvements, but will create a English Version of the PDF tomorrow. :(y)

-

The feature castle is not a cloister.
And the meeple is not acting as a monk or as an abbot when it is placed on the castle feature. The meeple is acting as a lord of the castle when it is placed on the feature castle onto the double landscape tile.
-
I used also the rules from the Carcassonne II.
3. Scoring a feature
Scoring a castle
A castle is finished and scored in the same manner as a cloister. Once it is completely surrounded by tiles, the Lord of the Castle will get 12 points and the player takes his/her Meeple, as usual, back to the players supply.
At the end of the game, all tiles in the vicinity of an unfinished castle score 1 point. The Castle Tile itself, scores 2 points.
-----------------------
for "unfinished" you can also use "incomplete" (like ZMG)

Ratings of Roads and cities around the castle.
If a road or a complete city that ends (or starts) on the Castle tile, those players get a bonus to their usual points. Each participating player scores 3 bonus points per participating Castle.
It does not matter whether the castles are occupied or not.

-
At the end of the game, all tiles in the vicinity of an unfinished castle score 1 point. The Castle Tile itself, scores 2 points.
But what about farm scoring? Are the German castles worth 4 points like the "Non-German" castles? :) (I mean the castles from the Bridges, Castles And Bazaars expansion.)
-
There is nothing in the rules about farm scoring.

What if your road starts and ends at a castle? Do you get three bonus points or six?
-
The example shows a Road running between two castles - Blue scores 10 points - (4 points for the road and 2 x 3 points for the Castles).
Not sure what happens if the Road starts and ends at the same Castle.
-
Looks like the points are allocated "per participating castles".
So 2 different castles: +6pts
Only one "participating" castle: +3pts
-
Are the 3 bonus points added before or after Inns & Cathedrals modifiers? I'm assuming after.

I think I understand the intent of this rule, but I want to make sure it's absolutely clear for the CAR, since "participating player" is not a phrase that has previously been used in Carcassonne. Does this mean that every player with at least one follower on the completed feature gets the bonus points, whether or not they have a majority? Does the person who completed the feature get the bonus points even if he or she does not have a follower there?
And I second the question about farming. Since there is no mention of farming, I would assume at this point that these castles do not produce points for farms since they were not originally cities/towns. However, that should be clarified.

Sorry, obervet,
to do a correction reading from a translation which was made by a translator machine is awul.
It was late in that night when I did that correction reading. That translator machine lost many words. That means my correction reading is worst.
--------------------------------
Here is the orignal German rule:
Wertungen von Straßen und Städten rings um die Burg
Wird eine Straße oder eine Stadt abgeschlossen, die auf dem Burgplättchen endet (oder anfängt), so erhalten die beteiligten Spieler einen Bonus zu den üblichen Punkten.
Jeder beteiligte Spieler, der Punkte erhält, erhält dabei pro beteiligter Burg 3 Bonuspunkte.
Dabei spielt es keine Rolle ob die Burgen besetzt sind oder nicht.
---------------------------------
Only the players who receives points for the finished city or finished roads get additional 3 points bonus.
The main rule for scoring features with multible meeples - see the page 5 from ZmanGames CarcassonneII

I'm interested to do the French translation (after the Tuckboxes). Wamboyil, do you have an editable file to do the job ?

The text portion of my file was created in Adobe InDesign, so if you can work with an InDesign file, I'd be happy to provide you with it.

Yay!!! It's in the cool sheet mode! ;D THANK YOU!!! Love these kinds of rules. ^-^ :(y)

I'm a little disappointed that the rules are so similar to the cloister rules, but with all the expansions that have come out, I suppose it is getting more difficult to come up with something new.
-
There are a lot of suggestions on this forum if you only look to the fan expansions!
you can go for some bullying. next player skips his turn. or the turns are reverted, not the one on your left starts but on you right.. etc..
-
I'm really regretting that I never bought this expansion. Anybody who have one for sale?

It's not gone forever. It will be available again in October.

Thanks for the good news Jere! That made my day.

Yesterday was a press event at "Festung Königstein". Udo Schmitz visited the Fortress and talked with Dr. Angelika Taube (managing director).

I'm not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but I have seen that Cundco are now officially selling the mini expansion 'German Castles'. They did showcase this beforehand at events but now the general public can buy it!
These tiles are given to each player and, just like with Halflings, you can choose to use them whenever you want to during the game instead of drawing another tile from the general stack. Just incase you don't know, these are the size of two tiles!
I'm not associated with Cundco, but thought I would share the news! Now, may the completionist in you go forth onto your next purchase.....
