US East and West Coast Maps
« on: October 19, 2020, 07:18:29 PM »
I'm somewhat surprised that the announcement of a re-release of Winter-Edition with the River included and a printing of German Cathedrals in the new art have completely overwhelmed any discussion regarding the new Carcassonne Maps for the East and West Coast of the United States. I'm very excited about these, not just because they are two new maps or because they represent my home country, but because they are clearly intended to be played together in a truly epic game. The current posters are already A0 size, I believe, so this will be twice that! You will need about 200 tiles to play, based on previous Maps, and these ones actually look quite open, too, so it may require up to 250 tiles, or perhaps the equivalent of three full sets (216 tiles). And there are bound to be new rules that use the Map Markers as well. Will two sets of Markers be required? What will the new gimmick be?

[Admitted double post]: I am a bit concerned that when the deal begins in two days, the cost for shipping is going to be extraordinary. I just checked the cost of sending two maps and three small expansions to be would be. Currently the price of the order is about €25.00 plus €45.95 shipping! I seem to remember something nearly as high last year. That's a lot of money for a few expansions. Once more I will have to consider things carefully. Granted, if the minimum order is €20 again, I may not have a choice if I want to get that sweet sweet Spiel 20 tile.

These maps are interesting on their size.
Main disadvantage of previous (European) maps was that thay vere limited to use minimum of expansions, and it was recomended to play without them. For me it is not acceptable. I like basic game but with expansions it is more than 100% better ;-)
Maybe here will be recomended to play with expansions.

And, in future, Canada with winter tiles on North and standard tiles on south ;-)

The shipping costs have prevented me from obtaining the maps in the past.  I don't think I am paying that much even if my house is depicted on the map.

There is a weight component, too, but yes, I believe you are correct. Not that I want a creased map, but I honestly would prefer a machine-creased mat and an affordable shipping fee. Shipping these maps out of Germany in a poster tube is simply too expensive. And you can't combine shipping with other large items, such as the new Winter-Edition!

Last time I ordered Maps and some other stuff it all came in the same box... The issue is that rolled maps are bulky and so it is the box containing them...

How is everyone else storing their maps? Since I haven't had the chance to play with mine yet, they are still rolled-up in their tube which makes them pretty much unplayable. So they'd need to be flattened out at some point, I'm just not sure how best to do it without the corners keep rolling up or how I'd keep them afterwards...

Jus t in case you were wondering about special rules for these maps, here is an excerpt of the product page at Cundco.de:

Quote
Carcassonne Maps USA East USA West now allow you to travel into the New World too. With the Maps USA you can collect chips, secretly view face-down tiles and get points for revealing them. But be careful! There are also minus points to be distributed if the revealed tile does not find a connection with the adjacent tile just placed there. There are new ways to play the game, due to new requirements and opportunities arising.

Also, (usuable) for all Maps, there is a new Mini-Exp.:The Map Chips, which contain a new, different rule for each map.

[...]

Attention: The rules for USA West and USA East will be added next week.

So be prepared for something new to read next week.  >:D

After a detailed examination of both maps of the USA, I found a marker on the map of the USA - West, where to attach a second map so that they form a unified whole!

-Anyway, it will want a new big table and about 300 cards (there are 336 empty fields - if I counted correctly)!

Yes, I'm looking forward to it too! The marker on the map looks like this (see picture).
