My problem with the spin offs is that they don't have enough tiles. The game is over so fast. We have Amazonas and have played it twice. I have also almost purchased South Seas and a used copy of the City several times. Unfortunately they only release little expansions for the spin offs. If I don't have 100+ tiles, I just don't want to play.
But I think the idea of the other spin-offs (e.g. Castle, City and the newer ones) is that while they're still Carcassonne games, they're mechanically different enough from the core game to stand up on their own without extra tiles and expansions because of the new elements that they bring to the game.
As a newcomer to this wonderful hobby: How does this even happen? I can't wait to play every game I put my hands on! Granted I only have a few of them, but still, I can't see myself shelving them purchase after purchase. Will it happen anyway?
* 7 Wonders: Babel – Sadly nobody wants to play this expansion with me.
