I've often been asked what is this strange Elo thing. I think it's important to write a few lines about this since it is used for all online competitions held on Carcassonne Central. This thread is an attempt to make it clearer. What is the Elo rating? It's a method used to calculate your relative skill level in 1vs1 matches. It was originally used for Chess but it is also applicable to other games, like Carcassonne! How does it work? Before you play your very first game, your score is set to 1200 and this score goes up and down as you win or lose matches. How many points you win or lose depends on the score of your opponent. Basically, the strongest your opponent (compared to you), the more points you get if you win. You can get a big reward for winning against all odds a match versus an opponent that is considered much stronger than you, but beware, losing against a player that has a much lower score can have the opposite effect! Interestingly, you won't lose too many points if you lose against a strong opponent... because Elo predicted you'd lose! That's right, Elo ratings are used to predict the outcome of a specific match. By comparing the Elo ratings of 2 players, you can tell who's going to win... but that's theory of course! Unfortunately, it would be too much work to publish the Elo variations after every single game played at Carcassonne Central. Therefore, it was decided to publish the Elo ratings only after competition milestones. But if you are curious about your current score before its publication, don't hesitate to ask. Send me a PM! Also my spreadsheet is available upon request. What about ties?If you tie a game with stronger player, you will get points and he/she will lose a few! Simply because it goes against the predicted outcome: Stronger player should win. Self-correcting system? What is this?Imagine a big elastic rubber band, that's the Elo system. Say you're on a losing streak and your score gets too low, eventually you'll bounce back (be patient it can take time), prove Elo wrong and gain rating points until your rating better reflects your playing skill value. In the same vein, being the top-ranked player is not the most comfortable position, as all other players have lower scores and any loss could hurt your rating badly. In other words, top-ranked player must keep winning which becomes increasingly difficult! The same elastic rubber band that helps you to bounce back can also bring you down! Want to know more? There is a wikipedia page here with way too much detail. See below the Elo ratings that were published after each major competition. New rankings will be published also in this thread for easy reference. Comments/Suggestions are very welcome! Hi! I will try to keep you updated about my progress throughout the day... but the schedule looks very tight so if I don't manage, I will write a summary tonight or tomorrow. Registration starts in a few minutes and my first match will be at 10:30. I'll play a minimum of 6 games. Objective #1 is to enjoy the experience and have fun. Objective #2 is try not to finish last! Stay tuned...

I'm in Paris today to participate to the French National Championship. I qualified last March by winning the tournament in Lille for the second consecutive year. We should be 6 participants: Winners of tournaments in Lille, Toulouse, Grenoble, Cannes and Paris (held yesterday), plus last year's champion. Here's a picture of yesterday's final. Hélène won against Jocelyn. Hélène's partner (Florent) is the French Champion of 2013 and went to Essen the same year. So she had someone good to practice with! The podium: I'll try to let you know how it goes during the day. I only know one of the participants so far: Hélène that I met yesterday. Though I've heard that last year's champion (Mikael if I'm not mistaken) is really good. Fun thing about the event is that it's outdoors in the open air and forecast looks alright so it should be great, whatever happens! One last thing: it has been confirmed by the organisers that I'd go to Essen to represent France if I win... Strange I know, but also very kind and generous from them so I'd be very honoured if it happens. I'll try my best! Cheers! Jéré

Perhaps members from UK can help. I'm looking for a book from English writer Daniel Tammet and title is Mishenka.
I'm wondering why it is so easy to find in French but appears to be impossible to find in English. I'd like to buy in English so that my partner can read it as well.
It's rather new so maybe French editor was faster to print it. I'll wait a bit longer to see if it finally appears. Otherwise, I guess I'll have to buy the French edition.
Thanks, Jéré

Hey! Very busy schedule this weekend... and it's all about Carcassonne! (Grabushka is complaining a bit about that... Oh oh!)
Right now I'm in the train on my way to Eindhoven to participate to the Dutch National Championship.
Yesterday, I was in Lille at Ludinord event, the tournament that I had won last year. My primary objective (as usual) was to have fun there and secondary objective was to try defend my title of champion... Which I did! I won the tournament for the second consecutive year! Still can't believe it..
I'm not sure I will have time to write a full report but I will try to give you detail soon.
Cheers!

I am not travelling during that period, so it is very likely I will attend! Some info translated from Dutch: The official Dutch Championship Carcassonne in 2016 will take place on March 20 at the Zuiderspel event in Veldhoven.
Everyone plays three rounds with only the basic game. Then the best four players will play two final rounds. The first three rounds are with 3, 4 or 5 players at a table. The final two rounds are duels. The winner will get a cash prize of 150 euro and also will qualify for the World Championship in Essen (Germany) and be granted the right to call himself/herself the Dutch Champion of Carcassonne in 2016.
Participation is free. Participants however will have to pay an entrance fee to the fair of € 6 per person. Advance registration is required. For the first 64 participants who register will have a goodie bag waiting for them at the tournament. There is room for 128 participants. You can register until March 15, and it is very simple: send an email with your name and mobile number to inschrijven@rollthedice.nl
After the tournament, you can still enjoy 2 500 square metres of gaming fun at the fair. If you fancy, you can then play a game.
Date: March 20, 2016 Location: NH Conference Centre Koningshof Locht 117, 5504 RM Veldhoven Time: The tournament starts at 11:00 and lasts until around 15:00.
More information about the details of the tournament can be found here: http://www.rollthedice.nl/activiteiten/nk-carcassonne/

Help please! Link: http://cundco.de/en/accessories/139/sankt-petersburg-komplettierpackI think this "komplettierpack"is only extra cards for the NEW version. Can someone confirm? Google translate does not do a good job. Or can these cards with updated graphics be played with the OLD version and would fit on the old board? Thanks!

I understand that is it quite early to talk about Spiel 2016, but I wanted to ask something BEFORE the main thread gets created.
I have read that this year several forum members plan to go and meet there. It's going to be a blast and I wouldn't want to miss that!
I was just wondering if it would be possible to organise the main gathering on the Saturday afternoon instead of Thursday (like in 2015)? I'm afraid that it would be impossible for me to take holidays during that period and I could travel to Essen on Saturday morning, or perhaps Friday evening if necessary. Does it sound like a reasonable request? Thanks!

Interesting tweet from the Coding Monkeys a few hours ago. In essence, the version for mac will be released this week, new expansions (yes, plural) are coming next year and we won't have to wait until December 2016 for the next expansion, it will be earlier than that.

For those interested in buying the Starwars Edition of Carcassonne, it is currently on sale on Amazon.de. At 13 euros (10 euros (43%) discount), it's almost a no brainer. The only little catch is that you need to buy for at least 29 euros to get the free shipping. Here's the link: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00V8LNHY6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A3JWKAKR8XB7XFIf I'm not mistaken, their free shipping policy applies to Belgium, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany (obviously). Cheers, Jéré

Nothing new for us, experts of Carcassonne, but Shut Up & Sit Down reviews are always fun to watch. In today's episide, Paul did not hesitate to torture himself under to nasty sun for the sake of reviewing our favorite game! Enjoy! http://www.shutupandsitdown.com/blog/post/review-carcassonne/I would have loved to hear a few words about what he thinks of the new 2.0 tiles... but anyway... Also, honourable mention of the creepy voice in the iOS app. haha

Currently, the pig herd bonus is incorrectly implemented in JCZ as its effect (+1 per city when scoring farms) should only apply when Traders and Builders expansion is in play. The house rule (ie. Pig herd bonus always applied) could be an option that one could turn on/off. Off should be the default value.
I believe that the confusion comes from the fact that the rules of the expansion "Graf, König und Konsorten" has been splitted in the CAR (makes sense because this expansion is some sort of compilation after all), which makes it a bit unclear, somehow... although the following sentence (taken from "Graf, König und Konsorten" rules) in the River II section of the CAR is pretty explicit: "If you don't possess the relevant expansions, the inn, volcano, and pig-herd tiles have no particular significance."
Note 178 in CAR 7.3, which states that "there seems to be no reason why you couldn’t use the pig-herd without having the pig, since they are scored independently. In fact, the ZMG version of the rules leaves out “pig-herd tile” in this sentence, suggesting that they agree" is a house rule (house icon and blue font) which, as I mentioned, could become an option in JCZ.
