General / BORED? Board Game Cafe
« on: September 30, 2014, 06:57:20 AM »
Hi everyone,

I thought I'd just share the good news that my dream of helping set up a board game cafe has been finally been realised.
We've been open over a week now and things are going really well. We've already had several groups come in multiple times even though they had never played boardgames before. We're right smack bang in front of a university so students are our main clientele. We can seat 24 comfortably, but we're already looking at how we can expand.

I'm sharing this because I have Carcassonne and you guys to thank for this. If it wasn't for Carcassonne I'd have never ventured on this crazy but exciting journey. I put a lot of effort into the designs and logo, but it has been extremely enjoyable to do something that I love. My wife also did an amazing job on the feature wall artwork with meeples galore =)

For anyone that wants to check us out (or like us) on Facebook our address is

General / Forum problem with Tapatalk
« on: August 23, 2014, 05:32:28 AM »
I've been meaning to ask this for a while. Is anyone else using Tapatalk for this forum? It stopped working for me a couple months back. I can't login from any device I've tried even after wiping app data etc. Other forums are working fine in the app. Would love to be able to use it again.

General / Meeple icon copyrighted?

I apologize if this has been answered before. I searched the forum but couldn't find an answer.

Is the Meeple figure copyrighted. Is it allowable to use as part of a logo or banner?

Reviews & Session Reports / Championship in Thailand
« on: May 11, 2014, 09:26:54 AM »
Yesterday I competed in the National Catan Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
It was great fun with 32 contestants taking part. I made it to the semi-finals, but never really expected to even do that well.
Finally a very skilled Thai guy won the championship and a free flight / accommodation to compete in Germany.

Here are some pics.

The organizer of this championship and I are now dreaming about running a Carcassonne championship some time. It would be great to have some official backing on board. Hopefully he can connect with someone at Essen this year to help make it happen.

The Marketplace / Joint Cundco order to Australia / NZ
« on: January 06, 2014, 09:09:58 AM »
I'm helping my Carc fanatic friends in Australia put together a large order to Cundco. I just wanted to offer to help anyone else that would like to order something from Cundco and only have to pay something closer to the cost of local shipping.

You would only have to pay a minute fraction of the shipping cost to get it from Germany. Then you just pay the shipping cost to get it from Perth to wherever you are. I don't know if there is anyone that needs anything but I thought I'd offer. =)

According to Z-Man's facebook page, they're planning to reprint Kids of Carc in 2014.

It's just a glimmer of hope, but one I've been waiting for =D

Official Rules / The Plague
« on: August 23, 2013, 09:02:49 AM »
My copy of the plague arrived yesterday. A friend and I play-tested it tonight.

We had one question regarding the rules.

It says the active player can choose at what point during his turn he will move a flea and move a follower away from the flea.
Does this include in between drawing a tile and place a meeple. Is it meant to be this powerful that you can grab your tile, find out its a city cap, use a flee to remove someone from that city, then place a tile to complete a city, place a meeple and score the points.

Is that how the rules should be interpreted? Have any of you used a houserule where you can choose when to do those two things, but if you draw a tile you must place it first?

General / Sort by Ranking in Download
« on: August 22, 2013, 10:56:36 AM »
I just noticed that when you sort by ranking in Downloads it doesn't work the way it should.
It just separates those that have been rated and those that haven't.

Can that be fixed?

Unofficial Rules / House Rules... a new fan =)
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:11:03 AM »
I used to be of the opinion that houserules were a bad idea, since playing Carcassonne a lot I realize that "tweaking" certain parts are necessary for games with multiple expansions being played, and if not necessary they can at least increase the fun factor.

Some of our newest houserules are as follows:
  • the school - allow roads that are connected to the school via other roads (because of intersections etc.) to continue to have the "teacher effect". This means the teacher will come into play more than 6 times, and it encourages the use of the wagon there too.
  • the messages - eliminate the use of the female meeple, messages awarded as per normal for normal meeple.

Reviews & Session Reports / Report: MegaCarc (w/ 14 expansions)
« on: August 13, 2013, 08:01:44 AM »
The Date  - 9 August 2013
Play time - 6 hours
Tiles - 245 after school and river

The base set
  • Wheel of Fortune tiles only, no wheel

The start tiles
  • The River
  • The School

The expansions
  • Inns & Cathedrals
  • Traders & Builders
  • King & Robber Baron
  • The Princess & the Dragon
  • The Tower
  • Abbey & Mayor
  • Bridges, Castles, & Bazaars
  • The Flier (Mini 1)
  • The Ferries (Mini 3)
  • The Goldmines (Mini 4)
  • Mage and Witch (Mini 5)
  • Crop Circles II (Mini 7)
  • + 6 tiles from Catapult expansion

House Rules
  • "Weaker King & Robber" arbitrary final scoring value of 15 points each, and a total of 40 points if both obtained
  • "Double dragon" two dragons in play
  • "No surprises" reducing the beginning reach of towers by one space.
  • "First choice, last placement" our simplified houserule for Bazaars. Upon drawing a Bazaar and playing it as a normal tile, as many tiles as there are people are drawn face up. Beginning from the active player and then in clockwise fashion tiles are chosen, but are placed in reverse order. Meaning the player who got the last choice gets to place first

The omitted
  • The Count - we enjoy the Count, but it just added one layer of turn-order complexity that we didn't feel like we could get our heads around at this point.
  • The Robbers & The Messages - to put it simply we don't like scoreboard clutter. Next time, however, I think we will include the Messages but without the female meeple.
  • The Catapult - we will never use it in MegaCarc
  • The Wheel - we didn't want to tip the "luck" scale any further
  • The Phantom - we will include it next time

Highlights - the stuff that we all thought worked great
  • The school - it was the first time playing this for all of us. We enjoyed the mechanism so much that we all agreed that the teacher effect would be great if it lasted more than just at the start of the game (with the 6 roads). We have a houserule to remedy that for next time
  • The bazaars - the usually disliked bazaars were enjoyed by all (well maybe most). It caused a couple of instances where players were sure they'd chosen the best tile only to find out that someone else had sabotaged their placement with a "useless" tile.
  • The mage and witch - great dynamic for the cities being hotly contested. Players often shifted their focus depending on whether a mage or witch was or wasn't present. It was also fun as you could "hurt" two players in one go, if you placed the witch on a big city two opponents were sharing.

The Fizzers - the elements that didn't really shine
  • the ferries - normally one of our favorites, the ferries had minimal effect in this game.
  • the dragons - though there were two of them, their carnage was limited to the first 40-50 tiles of the game. After that they rarely travelled anywhere of interest. Our houserule needs to be altered to force one dragon to move the full 6 spaces instead of allowing for switching between the two.

The Scores
Wolffy started out with the lead for the 1st first third of the game
My Dad then lead for the 2nd third of the game
Darchie and Trev surged forward after scoring a 70+ point city and fought over the lead spot for the remainder of the game.
I, myself, was rather surprised that upon final scoring I had just barely nudged into the lead.

Me 301
Trev 298
Darch 259
Wolffy 222
My Dad 218

The clincher
Though I had tried to get into the 70+ point city to no avail, I decided to finish it with my abbey, to gain the resources and the "King". I didn't realize it, but it would be that move that won me the game. I honestly didn't think they would be enough with Trev set to score big points from his huge farm with barn and pig.

The stuff-up
Trev realised that during the game he paid 3 points to ransom his meeple off of another player. He never utilized that meeple, so had he not ransomed the player he would have tied for the win at the end of the game.

The final verdict
We all agreed it was the most fun and interesting game of Carc we'd played to date, though it was the longest and most complex. If we didn't have the Annotated Rules there's no way we'd have got through it.
