Hi everyone, I've been a little busy fraternizing with another forum. Some of you may have seen it already.
A lot of people have been asking, what's the difference between various versions and boxes of the Carcassonne base game.
So I thought it was about time produce a little guide to help people either coming into the world of Carcassonne, or maybe not so familiar with all the changes that are hard to track here.
Primarily, I don't like to see people disappointed, so I think it helping people to understand what they have, or what they intend to buy is a beneficial thing to have. Hence why I thought hosting on BGG was a good idea. I also thought it was worth mentioning some of the more unusual things from around the globe too.... and as with anything Carcassonne, next thing you know it's worth mentioning something else tangentially related. So it soon became an even greater task, and Willem (and his Museum of Carcassonne) quickly came on board to help, the majority of the images are from his very very very extensive collection. Danisthirty also took a couple of good ones too.
It was a really fun exercise to do, and I learned of a few things I wasn't aware of, and often chronology gets lost in the haze of time. Big big thank you to Willem for his meticulous archival process.

I've said before and I'll say it again; this has turned out to be a very impressive and extensive post!
Thank you again for bringing me on board; I loved digging throigh all the boxes and discussing the wonderful rabbit hole of Carcassonne
I also learned new things, but most of all loved to nerd-out on something like this

Indeed, a great piece of work to summarite all this. Even though I self-imposed some limitations to my Carcassonne passion not to get too deep into the rabbit hole, it is a joy to learn about all the tiny details around the various editions, variants etc.
And I always learn somethig new. I am very curious about this "Magneto" score track. Was it sold separately or as a part of some particular edition? When was it published? And is it still possible to get one? I never saw an offer of this before and it looks like a handy variant to be placed so that all players easily see the current scores. Any experience with the use?

Hi Weetek, it was called the "Carcassonne Zähltafel "Magneto" and was available in May 2016 at Cundco. I do not now how long it was available for; it cost about 25€.
It's quite a bit larger than the usual score track, and it's a bit of a pain to store and transport because of the folded leg. You're right that it's nice to present the score to everyone.

Are you saying that the sheet is magnetic? I was under the impression that its just bended sheet of metal with print on it, and actual magnets are inside flat meeples :)

It's steel, so has ferritic properties. If I shake it hard enough near a copper wire it's likely to induce a current.
