Title: Storage/Cases/Boxes etc
Post by: Lord_Wishmaster on December 28, 2015, 07:53:34 AM
I have all the main/large expansions through to Hills and Sheep and a few of the smaller ones. I'm thinking that maybe I should keep it all in one large box/case. I've been having a look around the net and so far I seem to be narrowing it down to the following options:

Wooden custom made boxes.... These are far too expensive for the budget I'm thinking of
Plastic Craft style boxes... There is an Artbin one that gets mainly only reviews about Carcassonne(!) on Amazon (UK)
Cardboard Box.... Not happy with this idea.
DIY Job... My skills are a bit on the clumsy side to say the least.

So, what's the thinking here? Anyone got any experiences to offer? Ideally I'm looking for links to sites that I may have missed.

The basically wooden boxes are amazing but at £50/£80 for the small and large boxes, they are not cheap.  If you were to make a decent wooden box yourself, there is a good chance that it would still cost £30 in materials and loads of your time so the price is not that bad.

Another option is wooden inserts to fit in to your carcassonne box.  These are nice but I feel that the full wooden box is better value for money.

The third option, which is what i am doing until i can afford a basically wooden box, is plastic boxes which are usually used for fishing equipment of sewing things.   I got mine from a cheap shop in Spain and I have 3 of them which contain all expansions including wheel of Fortune,  all tokens and pieces upgraded to wood,  all 12 colour sets plus a pewter set, the score board, one piece city, wheel of Fortune starter, and a few other fan expansions.  They are not pretty but they work and everything fits really well.

A most helpful post and very timely as I have bought too many expansions recently so that my plastic organiser tool box won't fit everything in! For reference, it is the larger of the ones here http://www.screwfix.com/p/stanley-sort-master-organiser-set-3-pieces/2690d?_requestid=148278 (http://www.screwfix.com/p/stanley-sort-master-organiser-set-3-pieces/2690d?_requestid=148278) but I bought it from Homebase on it's own for about ten quid. I agree, the Basically Wooden ones look lovely but I can't afford or justify spending that sort of money on a box.

Rich,

How many tiles/expansions did you get in that large Stanley box? Does it come with a good number of dividers and are the areas available in it pretty much tile sized. It looks fairly large.

Am I correct in thinking that's all fitted into one of the Big Box inners?
I downloaded your Tuck Box file a while back... Ta!  :(y)
I don't have a Big Box set but this could be a start.....

Before buying the Basically Wooden box, I did use a Big Box set for storage and it worked very well. For me it held about half of the avaliable expansions without removing the plastic insert at a push. You could probably store nearly all of the expansions inside one with the plastic removed

Rich,
How many tiles/expansions did you get in that large Stanley box? Does it come with a good number of dividers and are the areas available in it pretty much tile sized. It looks fairly large.
I found it an ideal size to be honest, right up until I got a bit carried away earlier this month and ordered several large and mini expansions. I nearly bought one of those fishing tackle boxes that others had recommended eg. Plano 3700 or Flambeau 5004 but settled on this instead, but figured I could always use it to store screws etc if I ended up not liking it! The sections are a bit taller than a tile but quite a bit wider (although I tend to store mini expansions sideways next to the larger expansions so it kind of works). There is a large central block of 5 sections, with one being double the size of the others. There are yellow dividers around the central block which can be removed if necessary but I've kept them all in. As for the number of tiles, then I guess it depends on how much other stuff you have to store eg. meeples, tokens, etc. I have attached a photo to show you how mine is organised so this should give you some idea. For instance, the very central double size partition contains the 72 tiles from the base game with the start tile on top for easy access. Apart from the material (wood is so much nicer), my only criticism is that I can't fit the scoring track in there, but that's the not too much of a hassle as I keep it in a folder with the rules. To be honest, I'm tempted to get another the same so that I can fit in all my recently purchased expansions, and they'll even clip together. However, before I do I'll have to unbox The Tower to see if it'll fit with some of the yellow dividers removed. Mine says Stanley Sortmaster Junior on the back and measures approx. 37cm wide x 29cm tall x 6.5cm deep.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Rich, that's a big help. It's quite the bargain option too, Amazon have it for around £10 and a double set of it for £16.50. Although my current leader is the ArtBin one but that's been out of stock for some time. The scoreboard will fit in that one, but not my newly made 200 space one I suspect! The Tower is a bit awkward for storing as once made you don't want to be taking apart too much. It measures 23cms x 12cms x 6.5cms.... so that depth of your box is going to decide it! If that was outer measurement, you're screwed!

Here is my storage solution, thanks to "Stanley" Hardware.

All expansion tiles + some fan expansion tiles fit into the Slide out tray.
All meeples and extra bits fit into one side
The other side is just for odds and ends and double up of expansions, but plenty of room to put more stuff in there should by some miracle we get more expansions released.

I agree, looks most suitable. Did you have to make any modifications to the side with the meeples in (did it have fixed dividers)?

Yes the 3 large drawers are accessible from either side, and are locked in place when the side compartments are up.
The two smaller drawers fit on either side of the handle.

I agree, looks most suitable. Did you have to make any modifications to the side with the meeples in (did it have fixed dividers)?

No need. It comes like that! =)
All the dividers that you see are fixed, so you're stuck with that arrangement, but its worked pretty well for me so far =)

Well even if you're not 100% sure of your DIY skills starting and completing a project will give you a really good completion(ist) feel.
More often than not it will be more expensive than a purchased solution.

For anyone that wants to see what the BW box looks like...

I know it has been awhile since you posted this but I'm interested in the Big Box from Basically Wooden. Would you say it holds all expansions?
And also, I'm curious as to what that wooden thing in the top right of the tile area is?
Thanks

Yes, it holds all expansions. I have everything official except for a few tiles here and there and it fits everything with a bit of room to spare.

The wooden thing in the top right of the tile area in ARabidMeerkat's photo is one of the tile trays upside down.

Corroborating @jungleboy - I have everything of Carcassonne (original) plus every expansion apart from the Catapult, Tunnels, Windroses I & Darmstadt with enough room to have Winter Edition (plus Gingerbread Man plus Winter Crop Circles) in there too. Still some room too (good job - as I have at least 3 of the missing expansions en route)

It's too heavy to shake - the only issue I can imagine is with the meeples etc potentially jumping the dividers in the top tray (but only because I can't see how much clearance there is between the top tray & the lid when closed)

Yeah, what I meant to ask was more like: can I put it in a bag and go to a friend without having to put everything back in place. To me, it would be a pretty bad box if I couldn't do that.

Yes, it is something like this I would like to avoid. During transport the box might not always be right side up.

Then you need new transport (or you need to stop rolling your car ;D)

Edit: I just took my fully laden BW box, closed it, stood it on end, returned it to normal. The contents of the top tray were all still in their previous locations - shuffled a little. The contents of the lower tray were entirely unmoved.

I store mine vertically, and nothing has ever left its allocated slot yet.

One of the little brass cylinders that forms the hinge has, however fallen out - and has not yet been discovered.  I'm sure I can get a replacement when I next order from BW.

BTW: the square compartments in the top tray are ideal for storing e.g. Darmstadt, Labyrinths, Spiel 14 & 15, Garman cathedrals and similar small-count sets if you put a little sstrip of card underneath  and over the top to act as a token lifter.  You could even fasten the strip to the base with a removable glue dot.

I've been thinking about getting the big basically wooden box recently because my current collection is in a shoebox my other half has converted into some makeshift storage which works, but something more permanent would be nice!

However I have a couple of things I want to check. I've gone through all the threads I can find and I don't think they've been answered yet so apologies if they have!

So first thing - Can I fit my catapult in this? Looking at the pictures I think I might be able to just above the scoreboard but I can't figure out if the box would shut if it's there. Does anyone have any experience of this at all? It's actually an expansion we use regularly enough that I'd like it to be in the box if possible (along with the ruler...)

Also I keep my meeples in drawstring bags and currently have 10 sets. Would I realistically be able to fit these into the bottom of the big box? They're all cloth so the bags shouldn't take up much extra room than the meeple sets on their own, but just wanting to be sure.

Finally, the list of watermarks they do on the dividers seems to be missing a few expansions/spin offs I might like to have in there. Does anyone know if they'd do anything like this on request (Such as Hunters and Gatherers)?

These might seem a little specific but I can't quite work these out from the pictures/descriptions and want to be sure before I buy...

I would like to know this too. I think I have seen someone in here that had some custom dividers made. Maybe it was Decar. Anyway, you could write them an email and ask.

I'm not sure about this because I only have the Catapult tiles in my big box and not the other stuff. But I might be able to check it this afternoon (if I can find the actual catapult, that is!).

Also I keep my meeples in drawstring bags and currently have 10 sets. Would I realistically be able to fit these into the bottom of the big box? They're all cloth so the bags shouldn't take up much extra room than the meeple sets on their own, but just wanting to be sure.

You mean in the small side boxes on the right side of the bottom tray? Again, I'm not sure (though I can answer your next question, I promise). I use those boxes for expansion elements like towers and bridges and have the meeples in the top section. But I only have the standard six meeple colours. What you could do is take out those wooden boxes from the bottom row if that helps fit your bags in.

Finally, the list of watermarks they do on the dividers seems to be missing a few expansions/spin offs I might like to have in there. Does anyone know if they'd do anything like this on request (Such as Hunters and Gatherers)?

They have H&G, they just mustn't have updated their website yet. I went through this with them a few months ago and they came up with some nice designs. You have your choice of the mammoth or the mountain for the base game, then the stone table for the 12 extra cards, then the face for the Scout expansion. You can see them pictured here along with a falcon for the Castle falcon expansion and the winter crop circles.

So I have had my Carcassonne stuff in three boxes using dividers of my own making. However it was not very sturdy. So I ordered from gameguard. However on arrival I found it to be broken. They have promised a replacement part and I attach some photos to show how it looks now. My old system accommodated most of the tiles. The new one accommodates more meeples in the main box but less tiles. Altogether it is more robust but it can only just handle what I've got.

I'm currently looking into some form of storage solution, but I'm on the fence!

Currently, my whole Carcassonne collection (I think I have everything minus Princess & Dragon, Cathars, WoF, Catapult, and until the postman arrives, the Tunnels) lives in 1 base game box and 1 tower box, in organised chaos.

I really rather like the Basically Wooden boxes though a bit pricey for me and may look out of place on my game shelf, as I tend to prefer the original boxes. The alternative seem to be the Gameguard (though I hope Basically Wooden will eventually produce some inserts) so that I can get to keep it in the base game box. I'd still need to put the overflow into an expansion box, which I don't mind at all, though I think it may be hard to find a smaller set of inserts for the regular expansion box sizes to accommodate tiles.

The other more extreme option, though often thought-about one, is to buy the Big Box 5 (which also gets me WoF), sell off the other expansions I have that become duplicates (like Sheep and Hills) due to BB contents and then put my entire collection in there (using a couple of Gameguard inserts). How huge is the Big box? This may well be the negative factor!

According to Amazon the Big Box 5 is 43 x 9.5 x 32 cm http://www.amazon.co.uk/Z-Man-Games-78505ZMG-Carcassonne-Big/dp/B00AI11QPO

I just ordered the Basically Wooden, I'm looking forward to getting it :-)

Hmm, that does seem rather large - not sure my wife will like that on the lounge book/board game shelves!
(I'll have to sure up my biggest game and see how it compares...)

On another note, I popped an email regarding wooden inserts to Basically Wooden and going by my latest email from them.....

"Hi Simon
Email received – thank you!
We can certainly make a box insert organiser for Carcassonne – we use quality 3mm birch ply which cuts beautifully and ensures the finished item fixes together perfectly."

... we may, possibly see some good quality inserts from them in the future, fingers crossed!

I got a post about this on Twitter last night. Looks like box inserts are on the way from Basically Wooden!

Thanks Jungleboy, I'll drop them an email about the dividers. They look great!

I hadn't considered that I'd just be able to put my bags in there instead of the boxes if they don't fit. Seems like the ideal solution to me so that's another problem sorted.

As for the catapult…it looks like it will fit, but I might just check with them directly as well if no one has one to hand.

The box inserts are looking like an interesting alternative too, certainly feel they'd work for a smaller collection :)

I just checked - it doesnt fit in the top.  It's every so slightly too proud.  My box doesnt have a clasp on it at the moment, so it's hard to tell if it would  shut.

If you do remove the boxes (you might save a pound or two if you order without) - it could easily fit into the compartment with your meeple bags.  I bet if you asked BW to make a slightly deeper tray they would do it.

Now that I have Crop Circles I, it’s time for a storage update, which may help those considering getting Basically Wooden boxes:

This is my BW large box with what I believe to be every official old art tile except Darmstadt (obviously) and not including the River (III). It also includes four 50/100 scoring tiles that I don’t really need anymore now that I have the BW score markers. There’s still room for probably 40-45 more tiles at the back of the rows at the back.

The obvious question is how much does that stuff way.

Mine is similarly stacked - though instead of WoF, I have Winter Edition... - weighs 5.2kg / 11½lb

You could always remove German Castles for some more room too.  Or put them in the top drawer.

Is it possible to tell me if the top compartment is fully filled with stuff or maybe could you post a picture?

Question for BW box owners: How many more tiles than everything can you fit? I have all official expansions (except tunnels, festival  and russians, hint hint)  but also some fan expansions that I really "need" in the same box as they are used often. They amount to maybe 150 extra tiles, would they fit?

EDIT: just read jungleboys post, so only 40-50 hey? The search goes on...

My box is in transit at the moment so I can't check to verify, but I think there are one or two compartments in the top row that are empty (or that I have put bags in that I don't use).

Yeah 150 is pushing it. But as you can see from my picture above, German castles and halflings take up a whole tray in my setup and that's not very economical. If you put them elsewhere (i.e. in the compartments outside the trays), that would suddenly open up space for about 100 tiles.

The BW box is far superior to mine.  Don't tell my wife I said that.  :-X. Those wooden inserts are much better then the horrible ones I printed and glued to cardboard.

I am basically out of room and don't have the Tower.  My halflings are in a bag.  I do have a great nook for those German Castles though behind the bag for The School.

I need to make a new label for Watchtowers.
