Title: Which games or expansions are you looking forward to in 2018?
Post by: jungleboy on December 29, 2017, 06:29:50 AM
Since 2018 is nearly upon us, I thought I'd get the ball rolling. Obviously a lot of 2018 games (especially Essen releases) haven't even been announced yet, but I thought people could post what they're looking forward to as of now, and then when new titles get announced throughout the year that sound interesting, we can add those to the thread too. I'll start with a few, all links and pics are from BGG.

Kashgar: Merchants of the Silk Road (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/143175/kashgar-merchants-silk-road)
This is a 2013 language-dependent twist on deck-building that's only been available in German until now, as Grail Games is releasing an English edition, which I've preordered. My interest in the game stems from several things: firstly, it's set in Kashgar, a Chinese merchant city in the Xinjian region at the northern end of the Karakoram Highway that I've been to, so that's the sort of thing that draws me in to check out a game in the first place. My limited experience of standard deck-builders (the 'play five cards on your turn' type) is that they don't interest me much, but I'm intrigued by variations of deck-building like Concordia and Century: Spice Road. In Kashgar, you have three open decks and you cycle through them, deciding which deck to play from on each turn based on the three cards available to you and the cards behind them that you're trying to get to. Finally, I've backed quite a few KS games by Grail Games and I've always been impressed with their games and production. They've significantly reduced the size of the Kashgar box from the German original, so that's already a good start in my book.

Century: Eastern Wonders (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/242574/century-eastern-wonders)
I just got Century: Spice Road for Christmas and haven't played it yet, so I'm probably getting ahead of myself here, but this is the second in this trilogy of games. It can be played as a stand-alone game or combined with Spice Road to create a new game. Eastern Wonders is set in Asia (Indonesia I think) as our spice merchants from the first game now have a new way to get their spices. The third game is coming in 2019 and I assume that by then the merchants will just go to their local supermarket for spices.

Curio: The Lost Temple (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/240842/curio-lost-temple)
The rulebook for this was just placed on BGG today, so I'll have a proper look at it soon. From what I know, it's a real-time temple escape game set in ancient Mesopotamia, where players solve puzzles that change each game based on modules. It sounds fun and good for non-gamers and with the modules and the various difficulty levels, it looks like there's lots of replayability. I was at the fabulous Pergamon Museum in Berlin a couple of days ago and after seeing the Ishtar Gate and the other great pieces there, I have ancient Mesopotamia on my mind.

Museum (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/204505/museum)
The only Kickstarter game I'm currently waiting on (except for a very delayed game about dwarves that I probably shouldn't have backed), which just wrapped up its campaign a couple of weeks ago. With the archeology theme and Vincent Dutrait art, I was in on this one straight away even though in general I'm getting away from KS. The gameplay looks great too, and there are already a bunch of expansions although so far I've only pledged for the base game.

Franks beat me to the Isle of Skye expansion.  I see they changed it from "Wanderer" to "Journeyman".  Like Jungleboy, I am looking forward to Museum.

Here are some more:

I didn't even know about the Imhotep expansion. I guess that might force me to decide where I stand with Imhotep, i.e. whether I should double down and get the expansion or trade/sell the game instead. I like the game but I haven't played it for quite a while now.

I also like Kashgar very much. Have only once played it at the table, but several times on yucata.de. I'd also call it a deck builder, but one which is quite different then any other deck builder, I know. Not only don't you shuffle your deck (there are others, where you don't do that, too. But you build three different open rows of card, and activate always the card on top and put it to the back. This makes for a great puzzle, how to develop your deck(s).

I should probably add the coming expansion for Kingdomino - Kingdomino: Age of Giants (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/240909/kingdomino-age-giants), which is due out in France in Q2 2018, to my list. There aren't any images yet and not too much is known about it, but I love Kingdomino, just got Queendomino, and, besides, part of the point of this thread is to anticipate what's coming and see what we might be interested in without knowing everything. Here is the publisher's description:

You might fear the giants who will crush your precious buildings, or you could make them move smartly on your opponent's kingdoms. In Kingdomino: Age of Giants, the first expansion for Kingdomino, new royal challenge tiles allow you to score more victory points in many different ways. This expansion also includes a tile dispenser tower as well as a castle and king for a fifth player.

Rahdo just did a runthrough of his 25 most anticipated games of 2018:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb_R4KzenGA

I must admit that not many of them appealed to me (maybe none, really, except Eastern Wonders which I already listed upthread, and possibly Sorcerer City). There's a lot of fantasy/crime/legacy in it.

I went through his geeklist:

Dice Settlers caught my eye, as they made some well regarded games.
Mines of Ōlnäk, already on my list, but nothing about it.
Helionox is arriving at some point this year, I KS'd it.
More Raiders of north sea, KS'd that too
Above and Beyond: Amber Mines: as above.
Targi: Die Erweiterung in English  :(y)

I played a couple of games of Imhotep last night for the first time in over a year, including playing the B-side location spaces for the first time. We all really enjoyed it. I already have two mini-expansions yet to be tested, and since the game box is quite large, the A New Dynasty expansion should fit inside it (a nice bonus as I'm trying to save space). So I might go for this expansion too.

We have the little private ships expansions from one of the advent calendars.  We play with that all the time.  We don't have the Pharaoh's Favor or Stonemason's wager.  I believe we can play those without actually owning the expansions.  Maybe we will try them on our next go.

I have the private ships and the Stonemason's Wager, so if I get to play again with the same group, we'll definitely include those. I just found out about the Pharoah's Favor. Both the last two are available on the Geek Store but you're right in that you could just print something out to approximate them.

Endeavor: Age of Sail (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/233398/endeavor-age-sail) is coming to Kickstarter on Jan 30. It's a reimplementation of a 2009 game just called Endeavor (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/33160/endeavor). I don't know much about it but I like maps and sailing so that's a good start.

A couple of sequel-type games have been announced in the last couple of days and I'll be following their developments this year.

The first is
Yellow and Yangtze (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244114/yellow-yangtze), Reiner Knizia's new sequel to his 20-year-old masterpiece Tigris and Euphrates (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/42/tigris-euphrates) (one of my favourite games). It's a continuation of the recent run of Knizia games published or reprinted by Grail Games with art by Vincent Dutrait (following on from Medici, Medici: the Card Game and King's Road). Gameplay-wise, Y&Y introduces a fifth leader and fifth 'wild' cube. A BGG poster summarised the main differences between Y&Y and T&E in this post (https://boardgamegeek.com/article/27991057#27991057).

The second is
Herbaceous Sprouts (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244099/herbaceous-sprouts), a sequel dice game to Herbaceous, a beautiful little card game that came out last year by Pencil First Games, designed by Dr Finn with art by Beth Sobel. Herbaceous is a really clever little game that I look forward to playing with my Mum when I see her from March to May, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with dice.

Not long after I posted this, the Yellow and Yangtze announcement received the full treatment from Eric Martin in the form of a

I'm always up for a Portuguese theme and when there's dice drafting involved, then it's 2/2 in the early going in my book.

Coimbra (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/245638/coimbra) is a new euro coming out mid-year that got a write-up in the BGG news section (https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/73196/earn-fame-portugals-coimbra-gen-con-2018) today. I'll be following it to see how it looks once more details come out.

I was also immediately intrigued by the eggertspiele / (Plan B) announcement of Coimbra in an email notification this mornings.

Especially the designer team, Flaminia Brasini and Virginio Gigli, (the later author of my favourite Grand Austria Hotel, along with Lorenzo il Magnifico and Egizia).

One to keep an eye out for sure!

An update on a few of the titles that I've mentioned so far in this thread:

Century: Eastern Wonders
Tom Vasel has done several
preview videos (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/242574/century-eastern-wonders/videos/all). I like the look of it so far and the fact that you can also make another game by combining it with Spice Road is a bonus. I'm pretty sure I'll pick this up when it comes out.

Yellow and Yangtze
The new sister game of one of my favourites (Tigris and Euphrates) is now
available for pre-order (https://grail-games.myshopify.com/collections/pre-orders/products/yellow-yangtze-pre-order-due-q3-2018) including free shipping. I'll probably go for it!

Endeavor: Age of Sail
Decar and Chooselife forced me to
back it on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/burntislandgames/endeavor-age-of-sail/description). Jerks. Chooselife even made me get the 'Chooselife Special' (i.e. the Commodore pledge).

Those are the only three 2018 games that are on my wishlist at the moment.

Needless to say I've made no new Year resolutions about game buying  >:D

Edit: Forgot to add - all images from BGG main page and likely Publisher photos

Since the thread has been bumped, thought I'd give a quick update on my list. I've received half of this list but have only played one so far.

The Voyages of Marco Polo, Agents of Venice. Have played this one twice and really like what has been brought to the game. I am relatively sure it won't be enjoyed by all but will leave it at that. I plan to do an update to my CarcC Marco Polo review, writing about all the expansion to date.

Isle of Skye: Journeyman. Still no sight on this side of the pond.

Dixit Harmonies: Have received this and the cards look wonderful as usual. Haven't played them yet but they are easy to incorporate. I like to play the decks individually but I'm sure one day, when I find a suitable storage, I'll make one big deck.

Lorenzo il Magnifico: Houses of Renaissance. Still no sign of this either. Pre-order is up but haven't placed an order, yet.

Fields of Arle: Tea & Trade. Received and unplayed. No surprised since I've yet to play the base game  :(

Terraforming Mars: Venus. Received and unplayed.

Anyone else got updates?

Architects of the West Kingdoms is wrapping up it's Kickstarter - looking forward to seeing this.
Rocks of Ruin their expansion for Explorers of the North Sea, is due later this month, so that's my most anticipated thing atm.
