« on: February 09, 2016, 05:48:45 AM »
It was 3 years ago today that the new CarcassonneCentral was born!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL THE MEMBERS!!

...seems like just yesterday we were changing diapers...  :D

I am into this game because I love the theme and replayability. It has simple yet intriguing mechanics and almost endless expansion possibilities. Another thing I like is it has quick set up and take down. I am in at the Deluxe level. It has already reached funding and there are some awesome stretch goals. Only three days to go!

Can't wait for it to hit my doorstep!

Check it out here: Slaughterville

Other Games / Catan: Wood vs. Plastic

It looks like a "mighty knight" from "Cities and Knights of Catan".

Interesting. I have not seen that version of Cities & Knights. They actually made figures for it?

EDIT: Split from this topic.

Other Games / District-Z The Final Hours on Kickstarter
« on: August 12, 2014, 03:27:34 AM »
Check out this neat card game I am backing. It looks pretty cool and it has hit nearly all of the stretch goals coming into the last two days on Kickstarter. It looks like it plays pretty quickly but it's still full of content and theme.

I love Zombie games and I'm very excited to own this one now!

My wife and I will be attending all five days this year. Is anyone else going? Interested in a meetup?

We're defending our Carcassonne Kingdom title this year. That will be a challenge I'm sure. Super pumped now with only days remaining until the road trip!

Official Rules / Sheep & Hills question - the end tile
« on: July 23, 2014, 09:45:24 AM »
Question for HiG: If a player draws a Hill as the last tile is he allowed to place it without putting a tile under it? Or, does not having a tile under it bar him from placing the tile?

Leagues (including expansion leagues) / Round 5: rfielder vs Carcking
« on: June 26, 2014, 08:50:15 AM »
I managed to win both games. Everything seemed to go my way as far as drawing just the tile I needed and completing features before I got into too much trouble. Both games exhibited a good back and forth game play early on but I had good luck being able to block and trap rfielder where possible. Making points down the stretch is what I think helped me to the victory.

(Our second game crashed after several tiles. We tried to save it and reload it with no luck. Our second attempt at the second game crashed after three tiles. Our third attempt at the second game was the charm and we finally got it completed.)

Game 1:

Game 2:

What a great match this was. It was good nerve wracking game play in both games.

Game 1:
Somehow I got out to a quick start by scoring a 4 point city and an 8 point city. Jungleboy got some followers committed early and they remained trapped for a large part of the game. He did control the main farm and scored or controlled a couple of the larger cities. I was fortunate to score some of the smaller cities and claim a couple of the smaller farms.

I think the story of this game though was Cloisters. At one point I was lucky enough to draw 4 in a row. Actually ran out of followers to put on all of them. I claimed 3 of them and completed 2 of them. The 3rd I scored for 8 points at game end.  Three of the six cloisters went unclaimed due to lack of followers.
The score drew close near the end when jungleboy completed a 14 point city. He did a nice job blocking my efforts to join the large farm and I started wondering if my lead was enough. In the end it proved out.

Good game jungleboy!

He got it back together in Game 2 to even up the match in a much much closer game!

Official Rules / Sheep & Hills - question regarding Hills
« on: April 30, 2014, 01:13:29 PM »
This was touched on in another thread, but I'm looking for deeper consideration here so I made a new thread.

Here's the question: Do the Hills have a stacking power? Or does their power not stack and it's the case that occupying one is the same as occupying many?

Scenario A:
Red has a Follower in a City as well as a Follower on a Hill in the same City. Through clever use of the Flier Blue has managed to get two Followers in the City on the same Hill tile occupied by Red. Who owns the tie-breaker?

Scenario B:
Red has a Follower in a City as well as a Follower on a Hill in the same City. Blue has his Big Follower on a Hill in the same City. Who owns the tie-breaker?

Scenario C:
Red has a Follower in a City as well as a Follower on a Hill in the same City. Blue has a Follower on a Hill in the same City, as well as a Follower on another Hill in the same City. Who owns the tie-breaker?

We've only played one game using this expansion so far and we didn't know the answer to this question. We ruled that the power of the Hills stack, so if you have two hills (or a power 2 hill) vs your opponent's one hill, you win the tie-breaker. We reasoned that if Red has a Hill and Blue has a Hill they cancel each other, so by extension if Blue gets another Hill he regains control of the tie-breaker.

This really came into play in the last third of the game because there was a battle over a big farm. So we were all hoping to draw Hill tiles to try to get into the farm with that extra power.

My Daughter (bless her heart that she finally started to figure out how to farm) and I were tied on the big farm, each with a Follower on a Hill. She drew what would be the last Hill and was able, via clever tile placement, to get it glommed in. Now she had control of the tie-breaker. Effectively, I needed to get two more Followers in to eliminate the tie. A much taller order late in the game. That became very challenging and I didn't overcome it (I was so proud of her. It was an emotional moment). So it turns out the Hill can have the power to really turn the tables on Farms because Farms are relatively easier to get into than certain Cities or Roads.

Unless they don't stack.

Thoughts?

Happy Easter to all!

Our Sheep and Hills arrived on Friday!!! So we got to play our first game last night and we combined it with Easter Festival. We had a 5 player game and it was quite a lot of fun. I finished 3rd. Like a fool I forgot to take pictures. Kicking myself. But there will be more games for sure!

Other Games / Dig Down Dwarf - Kickstarter
« on: April 14, 2014, 05:05:55 PM »
I just pledged for the base game plus the mini expansion!

This looks like a fun filler or warm up game. We like to hit a couple of these on game night to break the ice. I think this one will go over well in my game group.

We'd like to get it 20K to get the custom box. Take a look!

General / HiG playtesting of new expansions - found wanting
« on: April 13, 2014, 07:19:31 AM »
Has anyone else noticed the number of official expansion releases that come out with holes in the rules and plenty of unanswered questions?

I was thinking we could offer our free services to HiG to perhaps playtest, but at least analize the proprosed rules so we can get all the holes filled and conflicts resolved before they are released.

We have a very fun game on Friday night 2/21/14. We had a 3-player game including Birthday in the Land of Cockaigne, The Ferries, Farmer in the Dell, Romans, the Builder, the Wagon and Bridges.

We played with approx. 150 tiles and the game lasted about an hour and 45 minutes. I played Red. My wife was Purple, and our Daughter (who schooled us that night :) ) played Navy Blue. It was actually very close at the end but the Birthday presents provided here the separation she needed for the win. We all commented after the game on how fun that game was.

This was our second play of Birthday but I would say it was our first full play. Our first attempt was more of a play-test than actual game. We enjoyed the expansion very much and like the rules as written. They are fairly intuitive and my compliments go out to the authors!

With the help of a Roman city tile we managed to build quite a large nasty city. It would have rendered the game quite lopsided if either of us were able to score it alone. As it turned out we all tied on it. My daughter drew just the tile she needed to glom in her third follower to create the three-way tie and finish the city in one play. It was a close call.

I don't have the Birthday starting tile printed yet so we started the game with one of my regular homemade start tiles. Can you spot it?

My daughter made a clever play (with a lucky tile draw near the end of the game) that won the largest farm for her - away from me :) What can I say? She's learned from the best  ;)

My wife needs much credit too. She also beat me this game - and has won a couple of large games at GenCon. She's sharp at this game.

Final Score:
Navy Blue = 229
Purple = 218
Red = 210

Here are some pictures of the final layout and scoreboard:

General / Awesome Birthday present - South Seas!!
« on: February 10, 2014, 06:20:11 PM »
Guess what I got for my Birthday yesterday - yep, you guessed it Haha - Carcassonne South Seas! And we got to play our first game which I won of course :o (let the Birthday boy win!)

I have to say that this game is the most refreshing spin-off of Carcassonne that I have seen or played. I like the resource collecting mechanic. The mechanic of buying the ships and the Markets. I think the Fish collecting mechanic is very cool (and it actually reminds me a lot of my Farmer In The Dell the way it scores).
