Carcking:
I stumbled upon this perfectly concise write-up of the history of Carcassonne. Not just the evolution of the city but also of the name itself. I found the write-up to be incredibly interesting and thought I would share it.

If anyone can add to this thread please do.

There is a fantastic map image that I use as my iPad wallpaper. It is available at this link http://1-media-cdn.foolz.us/ffuuka/board/tg/image/1350/91/1350911024806.jpg

Scott:
Hmm... rotate that map 90 degrees clockwise and the castle and cathedral are in the same locations as shown on the tiles in the Count expansion.

Here comes a part from an interview with Klaus-Jürgen Wrede:

about the development of Carcassonne

"On the occasion of a trip to southern France, where I felt after the track of Cathar followed by the Catholic Church as a heretic I came also to Carcassonne and like the most visitors I was impressed by the magnificent medieval fortification.
There, the idea for a game, in which each round a different medieval landscape developed in the different groups - farmers, monks, Knights and thief - compete for power and influence."

Here is the link to the complete interview - it's in German
