@Decar nice to hear from you.  Been a quiet couple of months.  Hope you are well.

I am overdue to post a follow-up to this post.  The short version is that “Venice Connection” introduced me to Alex Randolph and I got very obsessed…

Also Kingdomino is a fantastic family game.  Quick, tense, fun.

I didn't want to act like a professor
Hahahaha!  Yes, we are an insufferable lot!

I spent some time trying to spoil the fun in a professorial way, googling the history of the city and moats in France, but didn’t find anything too convincing.

Anyway, this looks interesting.  Maybe when we have rules I’ll try to make a C1 variant that uses wood bits as moats…

I suppose the goal could be …
I think there are lots of interesting possibilities!  Should probably start a new thread in the “Expansion Workshop” forum with a title that indicates a combination of Carcassonne with H&G.  I have a couple thoughts I would share in such a thread…

This is super cool.  +1 merit from me.

I doubt it would work as a competitive game, but maybe as a cooperative game?

Thanks for sharing.

Check put this Mahjong technology:

For context, classical Mahjong has 136 tiles, with each player having a hand of 13 tiles.  You draw 1 and discard 1 each turn, until you make “Hu” with 14 tiles (no final discard).  The other players can claim your discard if it makes some pattern of 3 tiles in their hand, but then they have to discard.

So, you only need 13 tiles for each player plus 1 tile to be drawn (plus one other tile for certain special cases), for a total of 54.  The discarded tile magically becomes some other tile if it is not claimed by another player!

It isn’t too hard to imagine similar technology for electronic Carcassonne tiles, with some expansion tiles that change the edge configuration of neighboring tiles, or turn knights into farmers (meeples would be virtual, rendered on the tile face), etc.

This is a fun thought experiment thanks!

I was in a second-hand shop and found National Geographic’s Global Pursuits for $4.  It contains 48 pentagonal tiles, obtained from projecting 4 globes—each showing different information like geography, products, etc—onto dodecahedrons.  There are also trivia cards and some rules, but I just ignored all that and enjoyed flipping through the deck and watching the chatoic flat surface emerge:

If you cut this out and folded it up, you should get a dodecahedron that is 4 tiles thick everywhere!

It was trickier than I expected figuring out where to put the tiles.  I rearranged only a couple of tiles near the end—not sure if I had to or not, but I got stuck!

You could also try to build 4 separate complete maps.

Seems like it could be a great puzzle to share with kids.  Looks to be available cheap on eBay.

Thanks for sharing this great landscape!  +1 from me.

It seems that Fliers really did contribute to making a huge farm!  Normally I expect only bridges to do that!

We find these sorts of farm wars to be tiresome, so we have long played with proportional scoring of farms.

Suppose that each player had 3 farmers in the field.  With proportional scoring, each meeple earns 6 points.  Adding more farmers is now less valuable than putting a farmer is either of the unclaimed 6-point fields at the left side of the landscape.  We just find that to be more interesting and less capricious than the sort of lucky 36-point swing that happened here.

78-tile 2-player game with special meeples only.   >:D  I really liked the final landscape on this one!  Enjoy.

Presumably that is to prevent you from making a torus with only base game tiles, since you need an even number of each edge type for that to work.

Curiously, each of the first 3 expansions (IC, TB, PD) also have two edge types with an odd count, so none of those can separately make a torus, but if you combine all three, the odd numbers pair up and a torus is now possible!

The 4th expansion is the first one with all edge counts being even, and there are at least two ways to make a 3x6 rectangle where all pairs of opposite sides have the same edge type (an unwrapped torus)!

Carcassonne is not in the physical world….

The Coast tiles would not be in the random tiles for playing the game, but they would be stacked in 3 piles on the far side of the table, City, Road, Field.  Then, when you place a tile that is 3 tiles from the edge of the table, draw a Coast tile from the appropriate stack to terminate your feature at The Coast line.
This is very similar to simply declaring features at the edge to be closed, like on a map.  It is certainly aesthetically better, but also the city Coast tiles contain a patch of field between the city cap and the water, so it seems like fields could connect around the city, which doesn’t happen in a map.  You could imagine a road separating two fields and then someone plays a RFCF tile near the edge of the table and then plays the Coast tile to join the fields.  Also this rule seems to give a player an extra turn just because they reached the edge?!

My point is that while I agree that table edges can produce unpleasant tactics (e.g. your example if running an opponent’s city to the edge to make it permanently incomplete) any alternative will also inevitably have tactical implications that savvy players will exploit.  These discussions seem to reveal intense personal preferences, but there are no right answers.  My rule is always: play with the rules that your group enjoys the most!
