General / Re: Carcassonne South Seas Versions
« on: April 07, 2022, 11:01:37 AM »
Hi chris6507, my Friday tiles have a turquoise coloured sea compared to the blue of the base game tiles. The Friday tiles make a separate island and don't touch the normal tiles so don't have to match exactly although I guess there is no reason why you couldn't build it adjacent to part of the main board. If it helps, I have the Sudsee version.

How about a tiny tower?  >:D

I briefly considered that, but there are a lot of tiles, and I like to draw from a bag anyway.

They won’t be collecting VAT though so beware of getting too carried away!

General / Re: Must Have C2 expansions for C1 Collector
« on: December 28, 2021, 12:20:59 PM »
Hi chris6507,

I recommend 'Fruit-bearing Trees' as an attractive and fun expansion; it is my favourite C2 mini. If you like the collecting aspect of Goldmines or Traders you will really enjoy the focussed activity that Fruit trees adds.

https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/The_Fruit-Bearing_Trees

I started off with C2 but as I became more aware of the game I realised I preferred C1 for its aesthetics but also the fact that it was finite! I sold off all my C2 except for a couple of minis that didn't exist in C1 or that I haven't manage to get yet: Watchtowers, Festival 15... but Fruit trees is the pick of the bunch.

I would do a postage comparison with and without Expansion 10 as including a box might do horrible things to your postage.

Cheers!

Does anyone know if there is anywhere that sells these little boxes for mini expansions for a reasonable price? $30 for one box is a bit excessive.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/144333567501?
Maybe it's for postage fee. Originally it's selling in UK for 6.49 Pound, which is not expensive

I'm sorry but I disagree; £6.49 for a small, empty foldable box is an outrageous example of profiteering and could never be considered reasonable.

While established forum members are experienced enough to be able to laugh at some of the 'SUPA MEGA RAR' listings, such listings and prices might be taken as legitimate by people new to collecting. I know I paid prices far in excess of what I could have done when I first started out when I was uninformed and excited about this new game and these sets of beautiful tiles.

Some sellers prey on those who don't know better or different. As a responsible community I believe we should try to warn people where possible. Since we have a sticky thread for recommended locations, isn't there also merit in having a thread to warn people about certain sellers?

Hi chris6507,

That particular seller on eBay is a profiteer and pirate. Everything from him is exploitatively priced for the uninformed or desperate. If there was a 'Do NOT buy from here' sticky he should feature. I have bought from him in the past before I found this forum and got an idea of reasonable costs, when my enthusiasm was greater than my knowledge.

In stark comparison, the UK retailer 'Boardgame Extras' used to sell them for £1 - £1.25 (they have long been unavailable). Their prices never seem to be much above Cundco retail + fair shipping. I don't know how they make money to be honest, but they are nice and reliable and I support them whenever possible:

https://www.bgextras.co.uk/small-box-for-carcassonne-mini-expansions-i4801.htm

I wouldn't be surprised if the eBay seller didn't buy up all the £1.00 stock to sell it for £6.49. It is why he is the only one left with these boxes.

My advice would be to get busy and make some of the excellent tuckbox designs available in the Workshop. That's more fun anyway and a more space-efficient option as the boxes are sized to their tile counts/ components.

General / Re: Quantity of each expansion

Hi chris6507,

I would agree that in larger games the effect of individual expansions/ mechanisms gets reduced. Now, we typically identify our gaming mood in advance and choose accordingly: base and usually a river with only a couple of extra expansions so our interaction focuses on how they play.

We want to fight and do mean things to each other? P&D or Tower of course! Maybe even Fliers too for extra carnage.

Feeling more civilised and constructive? I&C, T&B, Goldmines, Fruit Trees etc.

Feel like some serious road interaction? I&C, Ferries, King & Robber Baron...

I haven't played MegaCarc and it has its attractions, but personally going bigger to feel the impact is just making the problem bigger rather than better.

I agree about Hills and Sheep, it is one of our favourites and Shepherds make an excellent alternative to Farmers if you don't feel like the tension of a farming game...

Hi all,

It's all in the title really.

If you have or are getting one that you don't need please give me a yell. I am not in a rush so PM or reply whenever.

Cheers!

Hi kothmann, it looks and sounds like a great game!

I like it how you have tailored the experience so it is the most fun for everyone by picking the elements of the expansions that you want to use. Great for players of varying age/ interest/ experience.

I am interested in trying out some of the scoring variations you discuss, particularly proportionality. For big games we tend to dispense with farmers and either just use shepherds or ignore the green spaces so this is an approach we might try.

I guess proportional scoring still gives an incentive to dominate but I presume the winner still has to be at least competitive in most aspects of the game to get a winning score? A broad approach is required and swing is reduced so the better player is likely to score higher (all other aspects being equal). Does that fit with your experience?

Thanks for sharing.

News and Events / Re: Carcassonne new basic game 3.0
« on: November 17, 2021, 09:54:00 AM »
I guess every person on this forum is interested in Carcassonne in their own unique way, and finds pleasure in playing, or collecting, or talking about playing or whatever. That is great and how it should be.

I would not regard myself as a collector by nature. I got into this because I like playing it and enjoy the social interaction around the table. This is something that Carcassonne has reawakened from my childhood/ teen years. I would love this game to grow and continue to enrich the playing experience in a healthy, sustainable fashion.

New game content? Great. New content designed to work with the existing content? Better. It would show that the IP holders care about the game that they are curating and are responsible for.

Content from the past that is reskinned and reissued with the same omissions, incongruities and flaws? No thanks. Despite the prettiness of the new boxes and minor tweaks, this just feels like an attempt to take advantage of existing enthusiasm.

I start to understaand why people sell their old stuff.

I have gone the other way with this and have got rid of my fairly complete collection of C2. Now I am free to just concentrate on C1 and any bits of C2 or C3 or C4 or whatever next because I want to play with them rather than an implied need to complete what I do not have. If I don't want it, it is no longer relevant to me which is liberating.

But that's just me, and I can see why to others this is also an opportunity for new games, new artwork and continued excitement in building up the collection of Carcassonne that you want. Enjoy it how you like it, there is room for everyone and we all benefit for it.
