Since the new art brings in the gardens as a feature across the base game and the expansions, how about using a flower symbol? Maybe positioned like an asterisk? So, for example, Inns & Cathedrals in the new art would be:
You have to ask: What will your divider for Inns and Cathedrals II look like? Will it be a Meeple with a Meeple with a flower in the corner?Perhaps a C with a II or a flower should be better, then you can mark each existing expansion using the same iconography.

My only problem with the "II" is that the new art is only unofficially called "Carcassonne II" by us. What happens when a brand new expansion comes out in the new art? It wouldn't make sense for that to be called (e.g.) "Cows & Valleys II" if there is no original "Cows & Valleys" expansion in the old art.
