BGG Homemade Tile Seller
« on: December 01, 2016, 09:41:56 PM »
Pepan6680 is selling homemade versions of Fortune Tellers (13 euro), La Porxada (4 euro) and We Go to Carcassonne/Russian Promo (7 euro) in the Board Game Geek Marketplace right now giving free shipping to EU, Canada, and USA if you buy 3 or more Carcassonne Expansions until Dec. 8. Does anyone have experience with the quality of this seller's tiles? Also, is selling and buying these homemade tiles through BGG legal?

Quite apart from the fact that sales of this type generates money for people who have invested nothing into what they're selling, in most cases the results are very disappointing too. In my experience of sellers like this (and in the collective experience of people here who have dealt with them and posted about their experience afterwards), most of them are selling badly printed stick-on jobs that aren't worth the paper they're printed on and in some cases they're so bad it's impossible to actually play with them.

And as Decar says above, this kind of activity is not legal - please don't support it. :(n)

Thank you both for the wise words and clarification. So the only way to get Fortune Tellers then, is to print your own?

Or let somebody else print them for you. Without him making a profit on it. So you are only allowed to pay for shipping and material costs, not for the effort he took in it.

I never get to any meetups. But have you considered adding a crafting session to such meetups? Perhaps at the uk games expo.

I'm not sure I see the purpose of such a crafting session, but I think that's because I don't quite understand what you were thinking; could you elaborate?

The idea presupposes that
(1) the best way of learning how to handcraft tiles is to do it with other people.
(2) there is enough interest that it is worthwhile having a practical session.

I think (1) is clearly true, though I have no idea how strongly true it is. I have no idea whether (2) is true, but the only way of finding out is to discuss it.

Will you bring your computer and the printer to the meeting in a boardgame café?
And also following item are needed: blanc tiles or cardboard (2mm), scissors, cutter, glue and special paper for printing.

I was thinking about some videos to cover these kind of things.  There are several methods to produce tiles, each with their own benefits.  The best way to get started is to try one of them.  I find that sourcing materials changes results too.

The UK games expo runs art workshops. But I can see that trying to do a Carcassonne tile workshop (especially one using printers) would head off into copyright issues. It would look like we were facilitating the illegal trade rather than thwart it.

The video idea is clearly much safer (and cheaper).

I haven't a clue how you all make such professional tiles, so a video or a non elicit printer session interests me too.

The more I think about a crafting-meetup - the more it starts to appeal.  I'd quite happily pack my printer up and cart it across the country.

My biggest concern would be once a tile is printed, I prefer to leave it >48hours for the ink to properly dry (because it can't be absorbed) before varnishing....but maybe a hairdryer would suffice.

Who would be interested in coming?
