It's a random point allocator. I'm not that keen. And it's in the new edition images.

News and Events / Re: New Spiel 2016 Releases« on: October 09, 2016, 06:30:28 AM »Looking forward to seeing the reports from Spiel and finding out exactly what The Watchtower is!!! I am going to speculate. I think watchtowers will be a new feature that will allow one to get points from the boundary of a city without competing on the city itself. 20
News and Events / Re: republishing expansions« on: October 08, 2016, 12:16:19 PM »Edit: Using Google's site-search facility I did find this: http://www.merz-verlag-en.com/uploads/2/1/4/0/21405396/spiel_neuheiten_3.10.pdf but that is only a title and nothing more. Not quite nothing more. It is €6,50 and is being sold by CundCo, not Hans im Glück, which hints to me that it is a preview edition of next years Carcassonne-on-Tour expansion. I still want to know if it's in the old art or the new... I wonder if people would care to speculate on what the rules might be. At least speculating on the theme music shouldn't be too hard. 21
News and Events / Re: republishing expansions« on: October 08, 2016, 09:20:05 AM »Don't underestimate the new edition of Carcassonne. If social media is anything to go by ~60% of photographs shared are the new artwork and we know the new WatchTowers expansion is only produced in the new artwork. Yes and I have even tried searching again for the phrase "Essen Spiel 'New Releases' PDF". Still na-na. I have no idea what this watchtowers expansion is, and I can't seem to find any reference to it. I even checked the calendar to see if maybe it was April 1st. 23

There is actually a whole subreddit. The latest one is a "pregnancy announcement":

Other Games / Re: What games did you enjoy at UK games expo (or other games convention)?« on: June 09, 2016, 02:27:25 AM »I see you tried out Terra Mystica. It's probably one of my all time favourite games. It's very deep and very strategic. The first few times it's very overwhelming but after that you really get into it and it fast becomes people's favourite. I try and get it onto the table at London on Board at least once a week. Which faction did you play? do you remember? I had the nomads. One person had half an idea what he was doing (not me). I started though because I could see a nice line of hexes to terraform. I came last. I can see the point of it but I don't think we get to suitable clubs often enough or have enough keen players in family to consider it. 26

I thought it was great but Saturday day was so loud and busy in the main hall. And it was tough to get a free gaming table in the evening on the saturday as well. luckily we jumped on a ticket to ride tournament table that had just finished and stayed the whole evening there. The lowest point for me was Friday evening. We wanted players for evolution but everyone we saw seemed set up. They used to have little flags so you could announce you were looking for players. I think they should have a noticeboard or an app or something to hookup players. Apart from that I thought it was great. Fog of War - a brilliant little wooden tank strategy game where you have to move and fire on each other. The beauty of it was that you didn't know how strong each tank was (written on the base of each) and so you weren't sure who would win each battle. very clever. Of the games you mention this sounds most interesting to me. 27

I thought of this question when I realised how many people from this website were in the UK championship. We were bowled over by two games in particular:
First of all there was evolution. This did quite a good job of modelling the struggle for survival and as a game had many valid strategies for success. Secondly was Völuspá. This is a tiling game themed around Norse mythology. Rather than matching tiles as in Carcassonne the game feels a bit more like a 2-dimensional card game. We also liked (but not enough to buy): The Magnates: a game of power - we have Polish connections so Polish history was intriguing. Terra Mystica - quite good but extremely heavy. 28
News and Events / Re: "Mega Carcassonne" at the 2016 UK Games Expo (maybe)« on: June 06, 2016, 11:26:20 PM »I had a great time at the tournament despite not faring too well. I didn't have very high hopes anyway but I felt really off my game. I'm definitely not used to four player games and I vastly overestimated how many turns I had so I was never quick enough with farmers.Yeah I probably blocked too much and did too little farming (or farming that was too ineffective). I ended up coming 2nd/3rd/4th coming 2nd in my final game (I believe I was playing against asparagus who won the match).Seems about right. As I recall yellow came second (with some nice cities) so I guess that must have been you. The big moment of the game, as I see it, was when red did not play the CCCR monastery in its obvious place. This meant I had an easy time controlling the big farm and otherwise the results would have been different. Great write up Dan on your games! ....I feel I've learnt a lot for next year so I hope to enter again and hopefully do a bit better! Was a really in day though. Thanks Scott for organising everything. seconded 29

It's not Big News! that I came somewhere in the middle. It always feels like one is getting bad luck, but I suspect accurate perception of luck (or at least probability) is a key skill in Carcassonne. So my mediocrity is probably more skill than luck.
In the ranked 4th round I ended up on the tenth table where I had a really easy victory. I watched my daughter finish her 4th game. When I went over they had three impossible holes and a megacity shared between all four players. She finished 1st with the others tied for second. PS - My final high point of the morning was shortly before I left, creeping up behind a group of people looking at a results sheet and hearing asparagus congratulating his daughter on coming ahead of me. I piped up "Dan won't be very happy about that!" and made them both laugh which felt like a good note to end the day on! Dan, good to see you again and the dream was great. We really enjoyed your recounting of that. 30

Yesterday we played our selection of town gates. I felt I had pretty bad luck but there were some interesting moments. Town gates basically both facilitate blocking and unblocking manoeuvres.
