On the one hand, touting 11 expansions is kind of a stretch when it's really only the base game plus nine other separate products. Big Box 5, by comparison, did not count The River or the extra purple and pink follower sets as expansions; it used a more reasonable claim of "base game, 4 expansions, and much more." But BB6 wants to count even the Abbot separately, even though all indications are that it will always be a part of the Carc-II base game.

On the other hand, if their strategy was to count literally every "module" that you could optionally include or exclude as a game mechanic, then they should have put a big 12 on the box: they forgot to count Farming as optional.  >:D

My stuff: The Caverns of Carcassonne | Wheel of Fortune versions | True North (wind roses) | Icon facelifts | Converting CII to CI | Signposts & the Château | The Vault | Riverboats & the Whirlpool | trade list

I think it's worth remembering that the base game consists of 72 tiles and nothing else. Just because the new art edition includes the Abbot doesn't mean that this shouldn't still be considered an expansion. The River comes with the new art edition box too but this is definitely an expansion in that it's an optional component. The Abbots are optional, despite the gardens having been integrated into the artwork of the original/ basic tiles.

I think the claim that it includes 11 expansions is legitimate, although it will inevitably cause some disapppointment as anyone who already owns the new artwork edition is guaranteed to own at least 2 of them...

I don't expect to see a Z-Man release of this with English rules this side of danisforty. I expect I'll just go for the German edition and play with the old artwork rules...

The English version may end up sooner in Europe. According to the local store, it's up to the stores themselves ordering one from the States. One of my local store ordered in 2 copies in case I couldn't wait for the Scandinavian release in October.

Well said Dan, at the end of the day its very easy to pick holes in  anything the publisher decides to do.  You might not like the shade of blue they used on the box. While I thik it will make it easier to distinguish on my gaming shelf.  It's easy to moan about the new artwork. But new players having been buying the new artwork for 3 years now and they've enjoyed playing Carcassonne and those players would like more.  This box has expansions that have not been in print or readily available for a number of years now, so regardless of how many expansions are in the box, it's a worth while investment for players wanting them or wishing to start collecting.  The production quality will be immaculate as ever...and all the grass will be the same colour.

It's great to see HiG moving Carcassonne forward and appealing to new board gamers.

I wasn't saying the product was evil or shouldn't exist. Just making a tiny observation about "number creep" and then having a silly little farmer joke. Didn't mean to offend...
