URL Hyperlink coding
« on: October 16, 2022, 02:00:52 PM »
For the sake of discussion I'm going to describe this alternate coding using Curly Brackets instead of Square Brackets.

The normal way to insert a Hyperlink into your forum thread is to click on the second button on the second row (the piece of paper in front of the world globe) and the following coding will appear in your new topic window:

{url}{/url}

Then you insert your desired url between the start and end commands

{url}http://www.papageek.com/car/carcassonne.htm{/url}

This is the link to my personal Carcassonne page: http://www.papageek.com/car/carcassonne.htm

The final result will be your URL underlined on the forum page.  When you click on it, your browser will jump to that page.

All normal, but there is another way to code your link!

Insert your URL inside the end of the first command with an = sign in front of it with the } after it, then insert the words you want to see on your forum post between the }{ Brackets.

{url=http://www.papageek.com/car/carcassonne.htm}My Personal Carcassonne Page{/url}

This is the other way to create a link to My Personal Carcassonne Page

The current Carcassonne Central posting application does not currently make it easy for you to use this alternate coding, but in my opinion, the posts look better.

If you quote this page, you will be able to see the actual coding for my last URL.

This isn't really an alternative way of doing it. The forum supports the common BBCode syntax for a lot of common tags. It's generally a terrible ideal to allow unsolicited HTML in posts made by the member of the public because it will allow potentially malicious code to execute on the client's machine.

You can read about BBCode here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode

Personally, I prefer to put full URLs in posts, because I can then click on them in my email client without having to open the forum. If you hyperlink text, the hyperlink isn't included in the notification.

You should note that you are using curly braces, not the required square brackets in your original post.

Actually, I followed your link to the Wiki BBCode web page and this is what it says about Hyperlinks.

What I suggested is standard BBCode!

I am trying to inform those who post on Carcassonne Central that there is another way to post a Hyperlink.  If you post a Hyperlink on the Board Game Geek website, this is the first page you see when you click their hyperlink icon

After filling in the URL you want to link to, click next and this is what you see

If you want to see alternative text, just type it in and when you click "Add Link" this is you final result.

I was using curly braces in my TEXT only because I'm not sure how the use of random square brackets in the post would react and display.

Lets look at this from a Strictly Carcassonne Central viewpoint

When you click the Insert Hyperlink Icon, the only thing that is put in your post is the first line with the Cursor blinking between the two URL commands.

If you want the full path to the URL you are trying to link to to display in your post, just insert your URL between the two commands.

If you want some optional link text to appear in your post:
  Move the cursor back one space, before the first command closing bracket
  Then type in your hyperlink preceded by an = sign
  Then move your cursor back to the position between the first closing bracket and the second open bracket
  And type in the Custom Link Text that you want to appear in your post

Again, this is all standard Wiki BBCode.  But, Carcassonne Central does not make it easy to do it this way, so I thought it would be nice to show everyone how to use Custom Link Text.

Yeah, it's standard BBCode, not an alternative implementation.

You should know that modern browsers do not mix secure (https) and insecure (http) content; so I can't see your images.
Currently, the certificate for https on your website is invalid.

Sorry about that, I am in the process of making the necessary changes to do the conversion of my domain from http to https.  I'll work harder to get it done sooner!

Using parens instead of square brackets, this is the coding that my last image was illustrating.

(url)(/url)
(url)https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Main_Page(/url)
(url=https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Main_Page)WikiCarPedia(/url)

And using the last two lines in that example, do I want to post something like; the best source for information on Carcassonne can be found on the https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Main_Page website, or do i want to talk about the WikiCarPedia website.

Both underlined links will take you to the same location.

Just as a reference, the URL of this thread is https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=post;topic=6129.0;last_msg=88595.

I'd prefer to tell others to look at my post about alternate URL links.

Good luck sorting the certificates.

That URL you posted is actually an action URL to post a message reply after a specific message  on this topic. You'll have a warning that there's been a reply.

I've attached what the in-line URL looks like in my email client on my phone. I generally prefer seeing URLs because I can quickly check if the URL looks legitimate or is taking me to a site like isntcundco.de for example, although that doesn't stop anyone putting a different url src over a legitimate URL.

Enjoy using BBCodes!

Suggestion for links where allow mixed http to https use links without protocol
Like <a href="//www.wikicarpedia.com...
In this case browser will use current protocol so whe open page on http everything will showed and linked to httpwhen on secure everything also images will be downloaded from secure https.
Not the drops for everything bit it might help

PapaGeek's issue was that his certificate didn't match his domain.  So the the browser wouldn't load them unless you've explicitly accepted the cert.
