Thanks kothmann, I should have mentioned that for all of the options, when the game is “over”, you just stop laying new tiles and you then move to the standard end of game scoring based on the expansions that you started the game with.

Thanks for the reply, I definitely agree that looking at your tile as soon as you finish your previous turn will speed up the game.

We have talked about this in the past, BUT, knowing what your next tile will be basically eliminates your ability to make suggestions to the current player on where to place their tile.  This is especially true in games when we invite additional players to join us.

We actually purchased orange, brown, and purple meeples and phantoms so we can have up to 9 players!

We just added 15 more fan expansion tiles to our standard 4 player game this Saturday, bringing the total to 24 river tiles and 174 standard tiles.

As a pure coincidence, there was a Board Game Geek forum post on Sunday related to making the games quicker by “Playing with less tiles”.

We don’t want to play with less expansions, so we are considering 3 ways to make our games shorter:
A. Set a timer and the game ends after exactly 2 hours.
B. The game ends when the first player reached 150 points.
C. Before the game starts, take 25 or 50 tiles out of the random stack and put them on the side.

This would also give us the opportunity to add more expansions back to the game to make it even more interesting, without making the games extremely long!

So, my question to the group is: does anyone else have any ideas on how to play games with a lot of extra expansion shorter?

PS: the new expansion that we added was The Wells.  Great expansion, the roads in that game, on average, scored just about as many points as the Cities!

Does anyone know the year that meepleater first introduced The Wells fan-expansion?

Thank you, it is working the way that you said.  I did not have Authors and Features checked.  My assumption was that the default was every author and every feature unless I opened it up and chose only the Authors and Features that I wanted.

AH, but the unchecked boxes mean that I wanted no authors and no features! So the results were blank.

And the default settings on the page when you follow the link is that every box is unchecked.

Thanks wolnic, the image in your post is exactly what I am looking for, but the image on the provided “Under Construction” link does not include the expanded data under the info tab headlines.

Take your time and do the proper testing, do you have any estimate on when the functional data page will be ready to publish?

Thanks Scott, that page will probably be exactly what I’m looking for, but from what I am seeing so far, there is no “display” button to display the list based on “selector” settings!

How did you get your list? What button on link did you select to get the list?

The bottom of the page currently says “Category: Under Construction”, and it was last edited on 10 January 2023.  Any idea when the page will be completed so I can request a list of Expansions?

General / Looking for more standard tile expansions

Our group started playing Carcassonne in 2020 because COVID basically forced us to limit our social group gatherings.  We all started with Big Box 6 and, as we got addicted to the game, expanded our game nights with a variety of standard and fan expansions:

  • Flying Machines, both the BB6 Road tiles and the fan-expansion City tiles
  • Exp5: Abbey and Mayor with Barn and Wagon
  • C2 fan version of Besieged City tiles
  • 20th Anniversary tiles
  • The Phantom
  • Princess and Dragon
  • Goldmines
  • The Tower
  • Halflings 1 & 2
  • Under the Big Top
  • Our own C2 version of The Festival tiles
  • Our own Center Scoreboard start tile

We are always looking for other expansion that are played with basically standard tiles.  It seems as if a lot of the newer expansions seem to include odd shaped tiles and cardboard tokens that are placed on the tiles.

While writing this post, I found three downloadable C2 images for “The Wells” on Carcassonne Central. That is exactly what we are looking for; the images are just tiles, they all have standard BB6 City, Road & Field edges, and they merely add another feature that could easily have existed during the initial settlement of the region around 3500 BC: Water Wells.

Thanks in advance for any other suggestions you can provide!

Official Rules / Re: The Festival Phantom

I’ll give some thought to the idea of the official rule is that you can return your Phantom and then place it on another feature!

But I do have another question before I introduce our group to this expansion.

The list of meeples that you can return to your stack includes the builder.  I assume that if you have one meeple on a feature along with your builder, when you return your only meeple to your stack the builder comes home also because it cannot be left alone on the feature.

So does the list indicate, for example when you have 2 meeples and your builder on a feature, that the builder can be independently returned to your stack leaving both meeple behind on the feature?

OR, it is trying to say that the builder is an independent meeple and it can be left behind alone on a feature after all of your other meeples have been removed? Then it would have to remain on the feature until the feature is completed and scored!

The footnotes on the Festival page state that your removed meeple can be: “All of your own figures are meant here, including normal and large meeples, wagon, mayor, builder, pig, barn, shepherd, phantom, abbot meeple, ringmaster, and guard meeple."

And then: “If the Festival is used to remove a meeple, the Phantom can still be placed on that turn.”

So, the question is, can you remove the Phantom from the board, then use it as the second meeple placement?

My guess is that you can’t place it at the end of your turn if you did not have it in your stack at the start of your turn.

If it is not legal, it could make an interested house rule!

Oh great, now I'm going to have to make one of these tiles for each member of our "four person weekly game group", which, as of two weekends ago is now a five member group!

Guess I'm going to have to take a relaxing picture of each of our members!

Should I also make Halfling tiles for each of our grand children?

Interesting Scott you were writing your reply as I was writing mine! And with different opinions!

You are saying that you can’t place your Phantom after placing your first meeple per the 20th action!

And it still leaves the question about using your Phantom as your first placed meeple when the Phantom is the only meeple you have at the start of your turn, 20th or any other tile drawn!

Actually, “The Phantom is the only expansion to date that is completely edition independent, in that it can be used with both First Edition and Second (and Third) Edition Carcassonne.”

There are no tiles with the Phantom expansion, so C1, C2, C3 has no meaning.

And “After placing a tile, the player may deploy the phantom to it as a second follower (on a second feature).”

I believe that a “normal” meeple has to be played first according to the 20th Anniversary action, then the phantom can be placed, but only on the 20th Anniversary tile.

The question really comes down to, since the Phantom has to be played second, and it has to be placed on a feature on the tile just placed, if the only meeple that you have when drawing and placing your 20th Anniversary tile is your Phantom, can you place your Phantom on that tile as the first meeple being placed in your turn?

Both of the arrow symbol actions start with the wording “Instead of placing a meeple on the tile just placed” which clearly states that you can’t do the action and also place a second meeple on the Anniversary tile.

The Phantom rule for placing a tile is:
After placing a tile, the player may deploy the phantom to it as a second follower (on a second feature).  Thus, in one turn the player may deploy two followers to two different features of the tile he or she just placed.

There is no mention of the Phantom on the 20th Anniversary page.  Does the Phantom allow a player to place their normal meeple according to the Arrow’s action, then, if the player also has their Phantom available, place their phantom on the Anniversary tile if the feature is unoccupied?

Official Rules / Re: 20th anniversary large meeple
« on: February 12, 2023, 02:03:18 AM »
Yes, the rules say meeple, but they do not say that you can’t use an Abbot, Phantom, Ringmaster, or Wagon to add a single meeple next to another single meeple.  And, yes, for claiming an unoccupied feature, there is no rule on the size of what is on the feature when you are done, so a Large Meeple or Mayor should be allowed.

The issue deals with the wording on the double meeple tile rules that specifically states that after you have placed your second meeple, there can only be a maximum of 2 on the feature.  Adding a double meeple to a single meeple would give you the power of 3 on the feature’s tile.
