Title: Dirt Roads Fan Expansion

The rules state that "The tiles with dirt roads are placed normally. Note that a dirt road cannot be connected to a normal road." In the attached image one section of dirt road is clearly joined to a 'normal' road. The extension doesn't really make sense if the two types of road cannot be joined but I wanted to clarify things.

I would agree. The rules are contradictory. My guess would be the author went back and forth with how they wanted it and as a result left their rules ambiguous.

There seems to be more indication that the dirt road can connect to a regular road, than not. There are two statements that indicate that a regular road that includes any segment of a dirt road does not score any points. And as you point out the picture example itself. It seems pretty clear that regular roads and dirt roads may connect.

Good find. I guess you would have to house rule the offending contradiction away.

I do have a possible side rule to suggeat. Since dirt roads aren't technically roads as such, only trails formed by feet and wheels, they could be used to extend a field, so a field would score as if the road was just a grass tile and didn't form a barrier between two farms. Also, it would score for a road since, in another sense, it is a road. What do you think?

Not sure about making dirt roads part of the fields although the logic makes sense. I guess it needs playtesting.

I thing I found result for this. In original rules there is nothing about restriction of placement.



you cannot place Highwayman on a dirtroad


if there is a Highwayman on a road and this road changes in dirtroad, you get zero points for the entier road.


So @Wellidesigns rules are simple.


1. Road contains dirtroad segment worth 0 points when finished or on end of game (like incomplete road with inn at final scoring).
2. You cannot place on road which at least one segment is dirtroad.


So, simplification for placement: Dirtroad is just road. No placement restriction.

I don't know if it's fixed. I just made some decision, don't know if correct. Because Novelty last active in 2016 (https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=profile;u=71) and wellidesign in 2013 (https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=profile;u=439)
So we have to make decision about that.

I made a little expansion set for my son, who wanted dirtroads, lots of bushes and cows.no additional rules, just use them as ordinary roads

description is:
This expansion adds dirt roads which scores no points for the road.

But in other topic, was Dirt roads placed into same list as River and Forest.

So, don't know :(

what @Bumsakalaka is referring to is that: the rule says that you cannot combine a normal road with a dirt road but the picture of the rule says the contrary.

Yes I know this I've contacted wellidesigns many years before. That was a mistake to place the tile. That example picture is wrong. The version of the rules was 0.1 - that means it was not finished yet.
I think, with my examples the expansion will enjoy you to play with it. I love this fan-expansion. The version should be updated now into 1.0

Maybe in Version 1.0 the picture should be changed.
Then all is very clear and we have another finished expansion that had been unfinished for soooooooo long.  :D

Rule: A dirt road does separate the farms, like a road does.

game play with other expansions:
5th exp. Abbey: If you will have a hole in the Landscape there you can use the Abbey tile to close the dirt road and road.

the expansion will enjoy you to play with it. I love this fan-expansion.
I'm really intrigued by this.  Are there interesting new tactics?  Expansions mostly seem to increase the relative value of roads (like Inns, Signposts).  This seems more harsh than Princess, because you don't get the meeple back.  The possibility of having a road suddenly be made worthless would seem to strongly discourage ever placing a thief?  I guess it is similar to official Belagerer rules, but I don't like those rules, either.

Anyway, curious about how this works in practice...
