Title: Carcassonne Big Box with new tile format?
Post by: JohannesD on November 04, 2021, 01:14:07 PM
Hello everyone,

Yesterday I came across the announcement of a new Carcassonne Big Box by Kaissa, the distributor of the Carcassonne series in Greece:
https://kaissagames.com/b2c_gr/carcassonne-big-box.html

What really surprised me is that the image depicts the new format of tiles which is similar to the anniversary edition's tiles i.e. rounded corners and densely populated cities.
I have contacted the distributor for a clarification on whether all the tiles of the basic game and 11 expansions are like that, but I haven't received an answer yet.

Has anyone else heard/seen anything like that?

Best regards
John

P.S. On the image I also noticed a (deliberately?) wrongly placed tile adjacent to the lake & monastery of the river mouth.

It looks a bit like BB6 will be getting another print run, this time in C2.2.
We saw similar things in the promo images for The Gifts. It's BB6 tiles, but then in the newer format, also referred to as C2.2
My guess would be a reprint of BB6 is coming, but who knows :)

This is great to mix and separate C2.1 and C2.2 base game and expansions... except for the road-only tiles if they do not change.

Even the Base Game and the River I will be reprinted (the source tile and the lake tile will be changed). Another reprint after 20th Anniversary Edition. Study the image carefully.

This is the curse of the clipped city buildings coming to life! Will they reprint every single major and minor expansion in C2.2?

What about the Land Surveyors?????  >:D

Indeed, the picture shows a brand new river!  :yellow-meeple:

And an incorrect tile placement at the river lake!  >:(

At least there is something good with this design. I can consider that my collection is completed >:D

Out of curiosity, do you know if the shape of the tiles is exactly the same as what we see in Russian editions?

The corners are a bit rounder.... but not as much as the Russian tiles.

So the only new stuffs in this big box are the scoreboard (new version with river but without 20 anniversary easter eggs) and the river source (with road)?

The rest is the same as the previous big box, but with chopped buildings?

Would appear to be the case yes.

While I feel the 2016 Big Box is one of the best big box configurations, if it were down to me I’d have added *something* for the Anniversary one. (Besides the updated artwork).  [Edit: I’d at least include the small anniversary tile bag, tile bag was main thing I wish came with BB2016]

On the plus side it’ll only be several extra months for the English language version to come out… ;)

I have a feeling that this will be the final 20th Anniversary surprise item. That means we got:
* 20 Anniversary Edition
* The Gift
* New draw bags
* Big Box (2021)

I’d probably include The Peasant Revolt in there too since it started the new art style even though I think they released late last year. I doubt anything else will be released by Christmas.

I don’t think that is entirely true. You can purchase the 20th anniversary edition on Amazon and it is sold and shipped by Amazon. So this isn’t some 3rd party offer, but also you literally can’t get it anywhere else yet.

EDIT: According to Asmodee USA, the 20th anniversary edition will be available this Friday, which if true, then friendly local game stores should be getting their copies this week. https://shop.asmodee.com/release-calendar

Thank you all for your input.
I finally received an answer from Kaissa, the Greek distributor, who sent me a pdf of the tiles included. So it was clear that all the tiles with city segments are "overflowing" with houses, clipped at the edges. The river has a different source and mouth tile.

Alas, I couldn't help it and as soon as I found out today that the Big Box was available in the stores, I rushed to get it.
All the tiles have round corners like the ones of the anniversary edition. There are also a few differences in individual tiles, like the cathedrals of the second expansion, but I haven't had time to go through all of the tiles...
The box looks "classier" and has no plastic dividers inside. I'm attaching a couple of pictures so that you can get an idea of what it looks like.
I'm still very much surprised that this edition was made available first in France and Greece, while there is no information about it at Cundco....

It does look a lot classier than previous big boxes.
Seems they copied the config more from BB4 rather than BB6, if they included 3 blank tiles...

Looks like I'll be ordering from France soon

That divider is quite nice! Unusual for an official divider to have dedicated spaces for everything specifically. Also river watermark on divider, but none on the tiles  ??? ?

Hmm… I wasn’t planning on getting a new big box but if this offers something unique then I guess I have to. Part of me wishes this was a big box with just the 20th anniversary edition included and then some of the other usuals so I wouldn’t have to get it but here we are!  :red-meeple:

I wonder long until this shows up in the states if at all.

Good looking box.

Uninteresting contents. The same big box contents again for the *third* time. Still no C2 Wheel of Fortune.

Continuing with the trend for round tile corners and terrible looking crowded and cut houses in cities.

Box shows a lot of tile and meeple placement errors.

1 new unique tile.

2/10. No effort.

Another symbol for The Ferries. Modified source tile and lake tile. Rounder corners. Clipped buildings. Modified trade good tokens. Beside these, just some slightly minor changes. At the end of rulebook; the abbot is scored in step 2 or step 3?
Title: Re: Carcassonne Big Box with new tile format?

I was checking the Supplementary rules of the 20th Anniversary Edition and they state that you remove the sbbot in 2. Placing a meeple, then you go to 3. Scoring a feature and score the abbot. Afterwards you score all the other festures as usual.

This sequence is clear in the latest rules of the base game. Let's see the Big Box 7 rules.

This matches what they hinted on discord: no scoring takes plce in 2. Placing a meeple. This then overrides the clarification about the abbot from 3/2015. I understand this approach will also apply to acrobats, the shepherd and fruit actions.

Oh really they start to make rounded corner on all the tiles ? I didn't open my anniversary box yet but if that's the case i'm really dissapointed :(

Beccasue correct me if i'm wrong but all mini expansions + all officials 1 - 10big expansions + older big bow are all with sharp edges right ?

So far, only stuffs released this year have rounded corners and new city density, that is the peasant revolt, 2021 big box and the 20 anniversary edition.

They'll probably keep this line for future releases, maybe existing major expansions will be reprinted with those changes too, but probably not existing mini expansions  :yellow-meeple:

The Greek edition costs 50€, which is quite reasonable if not cheap, since the cost of the base game and the two major expansions amounts to more than 50€.

@petul noticed on Czech forum weird distribution of Ferries tiles on picture of BigBox 2021.
As before, there were 1x RRRR, 4x RRRF and 3x RRRC.
But when looking on picture, you can see, that there are 3x RRRR, 3x RRRC and 1x RRRF and once probably repainted 1x RRRF (but original taken from RRRR).

So, in layman's terms, how does this change the current (or what was current) understanding of interactions involving an Abbot and Acrobats?

It looks like they updated box art, fixing a few bugs such as wrong distribution of  ferries tiles,  the lone pig lying down, the lone mage and witch, although the meeples could be just out of frame, which was also slightly changed , and my favorite error at the end of the river where the road joined the field :D
I wonder how many units they send out to shops with those errors, collectors, don't waste your time :D

And funny that the black meeple in the too right is now no longer in a finished city, as they've just cropped the image so you can't tell if it's finished

So the first German prints have the errors. I guess reprints will have the updates, so need to keep an eye out for them.

999 games have launched the box now as well, but very quietly and they have it listed as the same as the previous big box. Not even a separate article number or separate listing; it's the same for them

To be fair, the rounded corners aren’t noticeable when drawing the tiles. I’m not sure if this change was made to prolong the life of the tiles. They are only very slightly rounded
Title: Re: Carcassonne Big Box with new tile format?
Post by: Decar on December 24, 2021, 12:41:55 PM
I agree, and putting them side by side, I feel like the new style is ever so slightly more aesthetically pleasing, as a single tile.  I get that the gap is larger between tiles, but I think that might help those funky issues that sometimes make you wonder if diagonals are open or fields are connected.

I received v3 yesterday, so hopefully I'll get to open it an give it a whirl.

Now Willem needs to buy all 3 boxes because they have different games at different stages of error-ness (?) on display. So he is happy because his museum is filling and filling ..... if Willem is happy we are all happy  ;D (and even HiG/CundCo is happy  ;) - but for a different reason  :o)

Don't let HiG fool you...

The artist was using a outdated HiG FAQ from the early days as reference. Those days builders and pigs where meeples with strength 0 that could stay alone on features until a new fellow meeple was placed on the same feature again...

If you want so see how the world of Carcassonne was in 2006 check this FAQ (just in case, meeple = follower):
http://www.modernjive.com/carcassonne/carcassonnefaq.htm (http://www.modernjive.com/carcassonne/carcassonnefaq.htm)

There are a number of things that changed shorty after, so this is a total blast from the past.

All the clarifications you needed back then can be found here, including the page above, clarifications for the River and Cathars (the outer rim of the Solar System those days):
http://www.modernjive.com/carcassonne/carcassonne.htm (http://www.modernjive.com/carcassonne/carcassonne.htm)

This is Carcassonne Archaelogy. 8)
