Official Rules / Castle Question
« on: January 13, 2014, 08:42:05 AM »
Hello, I have a quick (hopefully) question regarding the rules outlined in the CAR relating to castles...

The third paragraph from the bottom of page 107 of the current CAR (6.4) states that:

"At game end, all uncompleted castles score no points and their followers are removed from the board. A castle gets no points for farms."

For clarity, I assume the last sentence here should read "An incomplete castle gets no points for farms."? This is how I understood castles to work anyway. However, point 340 on the following page seems to contradict this:

"The RGG Big Box 3 scoring guide at the end of the rules claims that farms only score points for completed castles, but this is presumably a misprint, as there is no indication in the rules that this is actually true (especially as followers from incomplete castles are removed, so there would be no way to tell which castles were incomplete and which were complete when scoring farms)."

I'm probably wrong but these two statements seem to contradict each other unless I'm missing something? If telling the difference between complete/ incomplete castles is that big a problem you could always just leave followers atop incomplete castles at the end of the game as they're not worth anything anyway and this would make it be possible to tell which castles were completed.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

I agree with your thoughts on the basic game. With two young children at home it's difficult to find the time to play games, so if my wife and I are going to play Carcassonne then I usually want to make the most of it by throwing in at least Inns & Cathedrals, preferably Traders & Builders and River 1/ 2 too. This is why I tend to play far more Carcassonne either on Facebook or now via the Carcassonne app (albeit against computer opponents) as I can play pretty much whenever I like.

Good luck with the "Together Again" achievement. I'm sure you'll crack it. I managed to complete the "Conqueror" achievement this morning with a score of 157 points so thanks for your tips!

Hi Yellow, thanks for the tips!

I must disagree with you on one point though, as my experience of the AI opponents within the Carcassonne app leads me to believe that AI actually stands for "Actual Idiots". The fact that they place meeples whenever they're able to seems like a major flaw to me, especially since they often end up trapping themselves in the process. They're far too eager to farm as well (in my opinion) and have usually run out of meeples by the end of the first third of the game! This said, it took me a while to get the award for winning five games in a row against three or more opponents so I probably shouldn't criticise too much...

The award you're talking about where you have to deploy everyone and then get them all back again confused me a little too, but I got it on my second or third attempt. I placed my meeples in different features as quickly as possible without scoring any of them until all seven were down. Then I started completing those features and didn't place anyone again until I'd got them all back (not even on short roads or 4-point cities etc where you get them back again straight away). I guess you've probably tried this, but it seemed to do the trick for me.

When I asked about whether people thought 150 points was a high score I wasn't talking specifically about the app though, I meant for Carcassonne in general. My wife and I had a game last night and I won 120 vs 100 (one of my better games as she's normally very difficult to beat). I felt that I'd been quite lucky with the tiles I'd drawn and yet I still only scored 120 from them so an extra 30 points (to reach 150) would have felt like a big ask!

General / 150 Points?

I downloaded the Carcassonne app for Android recently and have been working my way through the list of "Achievements" which form a kind of career mode of sorts. Some of them are very simple and can be won almost straight away whereas others such as accumulating 20,000 points or winning 500 games are simply a matter of time. The one I've been struggling with though is scoring 150 points or more in a single game. This seems like a lot to me so I'm interested to know what others would consider to be a good score for a standard 72-tile game for two players?

I've come close enough to 150 to know it's achievable but it does seem to depend on at least one valuable farm combined with probably four or five cloisters and good use of roads. Does anybody here regularly go three or more times round the scoretrack when they play? If so, what's your best advice for a high-scoring game?

Hi Artificial_Intelligence, welcome to the forums!  :)

I'd never really thought about that, but I would have assumed that HiG would have done something to ban it by now if they didn't approve. Maybe it's something that they allow since it gets people into the game and encourages them to spend money on it? After all, it's not quite the same playing it via Facebook as it is having a group of friends round and playing together with a few expansions to boot. Just a thought anyway.

I downloaded the Carcassonne app for Android a few days ago and am loving it so far! The AI of the computer opponents is a little bit unpredictable (notably that they all seem to place farmers at the drop of a hat and will generally do anything to avoid giving any points away even when I'd judge it to be in their better interest to do so) but I'm enjoying going for the Achievements.

It's interesting how different people like different expansions, but not surprising that the first two expansions are so popular.

After having played with most of the expansions now, my "base" game usually starts with River 1 and 2 (22 tiles since one spring and one lake are removed) and includes the following:

Basic game
Inns & Cathedrals
Traders & Builders
Mage and Witch
King & Robber Baron

Each player has 7 regular followers at his/ her disposal, 1 large follower, pig, builder, phantom, 3 bridges and 3 castle tokens.

This setup always seems to work well for my group of friends and it rarely takes more than an hour and a half to play either!

Great work Scott! My favourite is probably the one of The Count but that's only because he looks so camp!

It's also available on Facebook via the Carcassonne App (if you're into that kind of thing).

Hello all!

I'm feeling very excited at the moment as my wife has just given birth (at 8:20 this morning) to our second child; a son! (see new profile picture)

We haven't made any big announcements yet but I was desperate to tell someone so thought I'd share our news with all of my Carcassonne buddies! Looking forward to teaching him how to play our favourite game (along with a lot of other things) but it may be a few years off yet...

All the best,
Dan, Becky, Jess and Ben

Official Rules / Re: Mage & Witch, and Phantom questions
« on: October 15, 2013, 09:20:50 AM »
Hello again. Thank you very much to everyone who responded!

I suspected the answer to my first question would be no as I played it like this recently (wrongly) and it didn't feel right. So I thought I'd better check. As always, my first port of call was the CAR but I couldn't find any obvious clarification there and unusually the Order of Play section didn't satisfy my curiosity either.

Apologies if this seemed like a stupid question to be posting in the first place considering how clear the rules appear to be, but I seem to be naturally inclined to find ambiguity in most things and the parallels between this and claiming a feature with a normal follower as the feature is completed were too much for me to ignore!

Thanks again,
Dan

Thanks for the response Fritz_Spinne  :)

Those rules seem clear enough! To get to the gist of my misunderstanding though, it's worth remembering that under the standard rules you're not allowed to place a follower on any complete feature. But if the tile you're placing completes a feature (and it's unclaimed) then you can still take the points for it at the same time. With this in mind, I checked the CAR for any difference between this and the placement of the Mage/ Witch but couldn't find anything to suggest that it wasn't allowed...

Official Rules / Mage & Witch, and Phantom questions
« on: October 14, 2013, 03:38:20 AM »
Hi all,

I have a couple of questions regarding how the rules of certain expansions work under exceptional circumstances as described below...

1) When playing with the Mage & Witch expansion, if you place one of the tiles with the Mage & Witch symbol on it such that it completes a feature, are you allowed to add the Mage/ Witch to that feature immediately before scoring it? Just to clarify the question: if I had an incomplete city and require just one tile to complete it, and then I draw the necessary tile but it has a Mage & Witch symbol on it, can I use it to complete the city AND add the Mage into the city to get a points bonus from it at the same time?

(as far as I can tell it looks from the CAR like you can, but I just wanted to check in case I'm misinterpreting it)

2) Also, am I able to use my phantom to claim points when I've otherwise run out of standard followers? I know that normally it's placed in addition and secondarily to a standard follower (or builder, pig etc I guess) but just wondered if it can still be used when none of these are available?

Thanks!
Dan

Hmm. I'm not sure about this. The woman carrying the apples looks too much like a man dressed as a woman. And there's something going on between her/ him and the guy on the horse too. Plus the donkey in the background is trying to eat that guy's coat. I'm not sure the world's ready for this yet...
