Just a quick update to let you know that I visited the post office in my lunch hour today and have mailed packages to everyone I had addresses for.

Hopefully you should have received a PM from me if I posted something for you, please let me know when it arrives.

Dan

Welcome Fellwarre.

I'm quite interested in the social side of Carcassonne and I love your question! It seems like your games of Carcassonne must be very friendly if everyone is prepared to share nicely and any attempt to take all the points for yourself is frowned upon!

The games I play tend to be slightly more competitive although people do share features if there's a mutual interest for all parties. This won't stop someone from breaking any pacts that form in favour of taking the entirety of the points for themselves though which seems a bit ruthless but most of the time we all recognise that we'd all do the same to each other and that that's just part of the game!

If everyone else is concentrating on one or two big cities then hopefully it shouldn't be too tough to ensure that it can't be closed once you've got used to the tile layouts. Obviously an incomplete city with a cathedral is worthless so you could be mean and attempt to ensure that all that effort on their part doesn't win them any points in the final scoring! I guess it all depends on how much you want to win as you ought to be able to dominate the rest of the game since you won't be concentrating on the big cities so much.

Personally I prefer to keep things simple and just draw one tile at a time straight from the bag. Having three in your hand at any one time would certainly increase your chances of getting the tile you need though and Carcassonne feels so much more rewarding if you're actually able to complete things from time to time so stick with it if it's working for you!

All the best.

@Ratz65 - OK then, please PM me your postal address. I'll take them to the post office either tomorrow or Friday and let you know how much it cost afterwards.

@Fritz_Spinne and 24hourpartymeeple - the same goes for you guys too. Please PM me your postal address if you still want what you've asked for and I'll post your packages at the same time as the above and contact you for postage fee (no more than 4 GBP) afterwards.

@Ratz65 - I won't know for sure until I come to send it but as the phantom cases can't be flattened I would imagine it would be something like 6 - 8 Euros for a small parcel. Obviously I would only charge you what the post office charges me. Does this seem reasonable?

Hi Fritz_Spinne,

I won't know exact cost until I take it to be posted but I would guess it would be around 4 Euros as a letter. This would mean flattening everything to fit into a padded envelope but obviously I would do this very carefully so it can be put back together again when you receive it.

If you're happy for me to do this then I can post them tomorrow and let you know how much it cost afterwards?

The Marketplace / Spare bits to give away

Hello.

Since they're not doing anything useful I've decided to get rid of some of my spare Carcassonne bits and bobs. Everything is free (except for postage) so if you're interested in any of the items below please post here saying what you'd like and I'll PM you for your address:

Boxed Mini Expansions

- The Robbers: 8 tiles + 6 robber figures - complete and unopened (claimed by Fritz_Spinne)
- The Count (German edition): 12 tiles + count figure - complete and unopened (claimed by 24hourpartymeeple)
- King & Scout: 5 Carcassonne land tiles, 2 special tokens for Carcassonne (King & Robber Baron tiles), 5 Hunters & Gatherers tiles - opened once but never played (claimed by 24hourpartymeeple)

Carcassonne: The Phantom

- Set of 5 phantom meeples (no purple) in RED meeple-shaped case - opened once to remove purple phantom (claimed by Ratz65)
- Set of 5 phantom meeples (no purple) in YELLOW meeple-shaped case - opened once to remove purple phantom (claimed by Ratz65)

Loose tiles (no boxes but all brand new and never played)

- 12 tiles from Bridges, Castles and Bazaars (no bridges or castles) (claimed by Fritz_Spinne)
- 12 tiles from The Count + count figure (claimed by wicke)
- 5 Cult Places tiles (with crown watermark) (claimed by DOCTORawfulMD)
- 4 Cathars tiles - NOT originals but good quality homemade copies (bought on eBay by mistake) (claimed by Apostolicartist)

- 12 blank tiles - pressed out but never used (claimed by Apostolicartist)

Because I don't know what interest is going to be like, for the sake of fairness I'd prefer to restrict things to 2 items per person for the time being. This can be lifted if there's still anything left after a week or so.

Enjoy!

Thanks quevy - I hadn't spotted that thread!

I could have sworn I'd already commented on this post but it looks as though my comment was removed? Previously I posted a couple of suggestions along the following lines:

Hills could be used a bit like Tower pieces to extend the range of farms so that they can include cities on other farms. Each player might start with a fixed number of hills that they can use to extend their farms in this way.

With regards to the sheep I thought that perhaps they could be neutral i.e. moved by any player perhaps instead of deploying a follower. I also liked the alternative idea that maybe the positioning of the sheep could lead to some kind of points bonus being generated.

General / Re: Carcassonne App on Facebook
« on: January 16, 2014, 06:32:28 AM »
I had an email from Exozet (the developers behind the Carcassonne app for Android) today, the most exciting sentence of which is copied below:

"I already have some good news for you: We are currently working on a general graphic overhaul of the game, at least four new expansions (incl. Traders & Builders and Inns & Cathedrals) and an online multiplayer mode."

I know that the Android app isn't to everyone's liking and there's no mention of any improvement to the AI opponents but I for one cannot wait to see these changes implemented!

I've only just watched this but there were two things that stood out for me.

Firstly was how annoyed Wil was with himself for not completing his cloister when he had the opportunity to do so. Sure enough he could have scored it and got a Meeple back but unless he desperately needed the extra Meeple (which he didn't) this placement was only worth 1 point. His actual placement was far better as it won him 4 points for the city plus an extra 3 points as it was on his farm.

Secondly was his final tile which he used to claim a short road. If he'd claimed the farm instead of the road he could have won himself 6 points rather than 3.

With regards to the final scoring, it sounds as though the majority of his Carcassonne experience comes from the iOS app so he probably isn't used to working out the final scores himself. As such, removing Meeples as they're scored probably didn't occur to him.

Overall I'd say that whilst it's often difficult to predict how a four-player game is going to go (particularly if it's a short game) I'm pretty confident that I'd smash his "unbeatable" reputation if Wil and I played head to head...

Official Rules / Re: Castle Question
« on: January 14, 2014, 03:42:34 AM »
Thanks for the clarification obervet. The point on page 107 makes a lot more sense now you've explained it!

Although cities and castles are very different features, I guess the link between them remains in my mind at least because castles are built on city foundations (albeit very small cities/ towns). This is why it seems strange (to me) to award points to farmers for incomplete castles since they don't get anything for incomplete cities. It sounds as though the rules are very clear though, misprints aside, so I guess this is what I'll play from now on...

Thanks again!

Official Rules / Castle Question
« on: January 13, 2014, 08:42:05 AM »
Hello, I have a quick (hopefully) question regarding the rules outlined in the CAR relating to castles...

The third paragraph from the bottom of page 107 of the current CAR (6.4) states that:

"At game end, all uncompleted castles score no points and their followers are removed from the board. A castle gets no points for farms."

For clarity, I assume the last sentence here should read "An incomplete castle gets no points for farms."? This is how I understood castles to work anyway. However, point 340 on the following page seems to contradict this:

"The RGG Big Box 3 scoring guide at the end of the rules claims that farms only score points for completed castles, but this is presumably a misprint, as there is no indication in the rules that this is actually true (especially as followers from incomplete castles are removed, so there would be no way to tell which castles were incomplete and which were complete when scoring farms)."

I'm probably wrong but these two statements seem to contradict each other unless I'm missing something? If telling the difference between complete/ incomplete castles is that big a problem you could always just leave followers atop incomplete castles at the end of the game as they're not worth anything anyway and this would make it be possible to tell which castles were completed.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!
