I'm aware. Not many people know about it.

The River (BB5) dilema is not unique:
  • Crop Circles II is Crop Circles, and Crop Circles is Crop Circles I!  :(y)
  • Do Halflings I and Halflings II exist, or there is only Halflings? Or Halflings Spielbox and Halflings HiG?
  • Russian Promos I, Russian Promos II, The Choice of Bogatyr and Baba Yaga’s Hut, Hero at the Crossroads and Baba Yaga, Solovei Razboynik and Vodyanoy... ?
  • Cathars / Siege / The Besiegers or just The Besiegers?
  • Wind Roses II?!
  • Monasteries in Germany, Monasteries in the Netherlands & Belgium, Japanese buildings or just Special Monasteries? Also, Dutch Monasteries, Monasteries in the Netherlands & Belgium I, Monasteries in the Netherlands & Belgium 999 Games, Monasteries in the Netherlands & Belgium II, Monasteries in the Netherlands & Belgium HiG, Temples in Japan...
  • The Labyrinth or The Labyrinths?
  • And there is only one The Festival, nobody cares about the number featured on the tile, be it 10, 15...
I'm pretty sure the only official 1 and 2 numberings are for the River and Halflings, all the others are purely fan-made. Also I wouldn't really equate these with the River situation necessarily as most of these already have distinct official names.
None of the names for Russian tiles you listed are real btw, the actual official name for that tile collection is Каркассон Русские сказки (Carcassonne Russian tales), so there is no ambiguity there.

@Death Meeple you have entered the side of rational thinking by abstaining from River III :) Congratulations!
I like your Lion King analogy.

Really, there are many more things which make different rivers distinct that the bulk of the community does not know about, but I am slowly comming back from my Carcassonne hiatus, so I hope to finally finish one of my Carcassonne projects that would unveil this, among other things. That will make it even more clear as to why any numbering beyond River II does not make sense.

And there is in fact River 1 - explicitly named that way - a standalone boxed version by Rio Grande Games.

there are different things said by different publishers, which makes that a fluid definition as well.
I realize it is fluid, but to my knowledge, there is no official publisher who refers to it as River 3 - which is what I would consider official.

In The Plaettchenliste, it's River III
Only because it's made by fans  ;)

Oh there is much more about the rivers... but that's for another day.
At the end of the day, there is only one objectively correct answer: River I and River II are official names, River III is not. Happy nightmares River 3 believers  >:D

But the layout is identical, no new tiles are introduced or changed. By that line of thought, all C2 and C3 rivers are much more unique because of entirely different artwork and/or different layout for starting tile.

First thing I'll do when I become emperor of the Universe is to ban everyone from calling "River 3" the river from the BB5. It's a slightly modified River I FFS, no need to give it a separate numeration! :))

Same here! There is no such thing as River III, only River I BB5 version. There are more than 20 distinct River I expansions at this point, many of them more different from the original than BB5 version.

Anyway, this is not the first time River had light gray baacks either, the River included in the first dutch expansion had those.

It is well known for not having a watermark. It is indeed an error, but it has been corrected in BigBox 5 and all new releases.

Official Rules / Re: Table edge rules

I think also officially the edges of the table do not complete features, though if I recall correctly the situation is different with maps. There are several inconsistencies like this in the official rules.
Those aren't really inconsistencies, the maps simply have a special property where the edge of the legal placement area completes the features. Normal play does not have this and instead the features remain unfinished by default.

Once again I have to question the usefulness of the prime directive. They put it in all rulebooks saying they are not going to make official rulings for interacions, but then proceed to do it anyway when we ask them  ???
I'm not complining about the extra rule details of course, but if they're not going to stick to it, then why keep printing the formula into rulebooks?

I grant you this wish, but it is your fate to document all of these rule changes for all eternity!

I wish there was a Wheel of Fortune reprint in C3.

Fascinating  :(y) I have never seen or even heard about these.
Pure speculation: Some german boxes which were already printed recieved these stickers after Carcassonne won SdJ to boost their selling. What about the contents of these boxes? re they identical to sticker-less german 2nd edition? Or is there some difference?
