When playing with the River expansion, do you remove the start tile from the game or does it stay in? If it stays in, when playing with stacks it would be too obvious. So i tend to leave it out. Is this the correct way?
-
The official rules tell you to remove it from the game when using any other start tiles (except when using the School).
Depending on the mood, I shuffle the start tile with the river tiles so one of the players has a surprise. The only issue is that you have to be careful when placing this tile not create an impossible scenario for the river to be completed.
If playing with stacks or the tower dispenser you could use a house rule so placing the start tile in the middle of the game has some risk associated that you have to evaluate. For example:
* The start tile cannot be placed if it doesn't complete a feature. Until that point, other features completed will score no points.
* If you complete one of your features with the start tile, you decide the opponent that will play and additional turn after their regular turn.
* If you complete an opponent's feature with the start tile, you will have an additional turn.
So, even when knowing the you may pick the start tile (recognized by its darker back), you have to wait for the right moment to maximize your gain or at least reach a compromise.

Play with bag. Than nobody can see back side of cards ;-)

That is an option. Or if you want your tiles to have greater longevity (they get worn out much faster using the bag), try using the Tower from The Tower exp. and turn it around so that you can draw tiles without seeing the backs.

Yes it's option. But currently I sold my Tower expansion because it was C1 and waiting for buing C2 version. Currently we start lockdown in Slovakia...
-
If I play with any river, I usually leave out the starting tile. So we don't use it at all
-
Playing with the tower dispenser is a great idea! If only had the tower expansion. :-\
-
If not getting the expansion, you can get a spare one from Cundco.
You can fold it and take it everywhere. It is part of my traveling pack. ;)
-
Wish I knew that when the spiel tile came out and made my big order.
-
Keep an eye on the Cundco site around late November-early December.
I assume you won't be able to miss it with all the fuzz around it.
-
I don’t need the spiel 20 tile anymore. Already got mine! :))

Agh! Lucky, I’m still waiting! I’m also looking forward to enjoying the artwork of the new Cathedrals with my Spiel 20 order.
-
I meant that I placed my order already. I still haven’t received it
-
I think we all are still waiting... Maybe a few lucky ones have received their precious Spiel 20 promo tiles already...
-
If really keen on using all the tiles, you can have the river and the starting tile both to begin with, joined at their grass ends, river flows opposite city segment. :yellow-meeple:
-
This is also option which decrease opportunity to create big field arround river pring. I like it.
(When not playing with Bridges :D)
-
I hate bridges, they're meant to allow more placement opportunities and to make roads a little more attractive.
But when playing, their main power is to enlarge and join fields, loosing all of their initial purpose.
I think their consequences on fields was simply underestimated (or ignored?) during conception :-\
I house rule them to separate fields :yellow-meeple:
-
Ha ha ha!
I love bridges and their devilish influence on fields...
-
Playing testing add-ons in new JCloisterZone with Cliffs add-on and I realized now can cliff ruins all farmers strategy. So here are bridges welcome for its main purpose.
