The site differentiates between fan-made Variants and fan-made Expansions. A Variant is a different way of playing with the available materials and does not require extra pieces. A Variant will consists of only rules. House rules are a form of variant. An Expansion contains other materials such as tiles or meeples or tokens that are used in a game. An expansion may or may not have additional rules. The respective icons after an entry indicates the following:
indicates that the fan-made expansion has trade goods.
indicates that the fan-made expansion can be played with only 2 new tiles.
indicates that the fan-made expansion must be played together with the fan-made Forests expansion .
indicates that the fan-made expansion contains some Forests tiles that may be removed if not playing with the Forests expansion.
indicates an expansion with river tiles. Some of these expansions may be played without the Fishermen expansion, but requires either the River or River II expansions. Alternatively, the river tiles may be removed if not playing with a River expansion or with Fishermen.
indicates that the fan-made expansion must be played together with the fan-man Mountains expansion.
indicates that the fan-made expansion contain Mountain tiles that may be removed if not playing with the Mountains expansion. indicates that the fan-made expansion has tiles with wells depicted on them. indicates that the fan-made expansion requires additional wooden pieces (some of which may be optional).
Fan-Made Variants - Invasion of Catharism, by Joff, provides an alternative way of playing both the Cathar and Siege tiles together.
- The Three Musketeers, by Gwommy, adds musketeers to the game without any additional pieces (but does require Abbey and Mayors).
- The Arbitress, by Gwommy, uses the fairy from Princess and Dragon in a different way. It may also be used as an expansion.
Fan-Made Expansions The Medieval Expansion collects together four fan-made expansions that adds excitement to a city. Each of these expansion may be added to the game of Carcassonne separately, or they may be added together. They are all developed by Jonathan Warren (Joff) and consist of: The Forests series of expansions adds a new landscape feature - Forests. The Forests expansion is a mammoth 150-tile expansion and may be added to a game of Carcassonne independently of the others. All the other expansions in the series require the Forests expansion to be played with. The series were developed by Scott and Novelty and consist of:- Forests, the original Forests expansion, with 150 tiles.
  - Green Dragon, the sequel to the Forests expansion, with 60 tiles.
 - Merry Men, which adds an Outlaw (image by Sylvia Baker, similar to the King or Robber Baron, but for forests) and a Brawling Tournament (the Jousting Tournament from the Medieval Expansion for Forests).
 - Timber!, with wood trade goods on Forest tiles.
 - Evergreen Forest, with 45 tiles that show icons on Forest segments that increases the value of a forest, or gives a double turn.
 - An Apple a Day, by Cappy, with magical apples trade goods. Some of these apple trade goods have special abilities which may be used by the player who has obtained the apple trade goods.
 - Fairy Tales (featuring the Big Bad Wolf), with tiles featuring elements from a number of fan-made expansions based on children's fairy tales.
 - Log Cabin, with 12 tiles, each with a log cabin with its unique scoring method.
 - Woodlands , adds 24 tiles with more than one icon.
 - Forest Fire, by jputt927, with a Forest fire tile that wrecks havoc on forests.

The Fishermen series of expansions changes the river such that it becomes like any normal tile feature. The Fishermen expansion may be added to a game of Carcassonne independently of the others. All the other expansions in the series require that the Fishermen expansion be played with. This series was developed by Novelty and consists of:
Fishermen, the original expansion to play river tiles as normal tiles, with 60 new river tiles.  - Kettle of Fish, with 30 tiles that show icons on River segments that increases the value of a river, and fish trade goods.
 - Swan Lake, with swans on the 15 River tiles that increases the value of a river.
 - Whispering Woods, with 60 tiles which consists of tiles with both Forest and River elements.
 - Fish Huts, with 12 tiles, each with a fish hut with its unique scoring method.
 - Waterfalls, by hester, with 3 new waterfall tiles.
 - Tributaries , with 30 tiles, each one with at least one special icon.
 - Trifecta, where each tile in the expansion has at least 3 icons or 3 things going on.
 - Fishing boats, by CKorfmann, which introduces a fishing boat follower and no new tiles.
 - Angler and Fish Farm, which adds the Angler, and introduces the Tournament for rivers.

The Oceans series of expansions introduces Oceans as a new landscape feature. Oceans divide the playing area into two and allows for swashbuckling adventure. All the other expansions in the series require that the Oceans expansion be played with. The series may also be played as a standalone (i.e. without the other Carcassonne expansions). This series and all expansions was developed by skipboris and consists of: - The Oceans, with a beach starter tile and 108 Ocean tiles.
 - The Oceans - Men of the Sea, which adds Chateau D'If, betrayal, mutiny and islands to strand sailors on.
- The Oceans - Turbulent Waters, which adds maelstorms and hurricanes, the Leviathan and Mermaid, Pirate Sancturies, and more.
 - The Oceans - Deltas, is a small expansion (compared to the others) and allows for connections between rivers to the Ocean.
- The Oceans - Buried Treasure, comes with maps and treasure and a few other extras for the Oceans.

The Oceans also has its own Collected Annotated Rules. The Mountains series of expansions introduces Mountains as a new landscape feature. Mountains are not scored like the normal landscape feature, but is instead scored when the tile is played. All the other expansions in the series require that the Mountains expansion be played with. This series was developed by Novelty and Scott and consists of:- Mountains, with 45 new tiles.
 - High Places, with cloisters and shrines on mountains.
 - Dragon's Lair, a tile-only expansion for Mountains, with the icons from Princess and Dragon.
 - Gold Rush, which adds coal, ore and gold in the mountains.
 
The Treasure Hunt series of expansions adds keys and treasure chests and rewards. The Treasure Hunt expansion may be added to a game of Carcassonne independently of the other. The Treasure Chest expansion must be used together with the Treasure Hunt expansion. - Treasure Hunt, by Maulei, which adds treasure chests and keys on tiles, which when the correct combination is obtained, confers an extension of one's turn with the placement of an extra tile. Extra meeples required.
 - Treasure Chest, by Novelty, the expansion for Treasure Hunt which includes Forests and River tiles. Must be played together with the Treasure Hunt fan-made expansion.

The Wells series of expansions adds wells along roads and make these wells somthing to be fought over. The Fields series of expansions adds fields to the farms.
- Lavender Fields, by wellidesigns, which adds honey trade goods and enable double turn for farms.
 - Wheatfields, based on the original idea by wellidesigns, and tiles by Chris Lynn, which enable double turn for cloisters.
 - Vineyards, based on the original idea by wellidesign, and tiles by Gwommy, which enables double turn for shrines.
 The Lord of the Rings series of expansions adds popular tiles from the mythology of the works of Tolkien.
Other fan-made expansions: Gold Mines, by Scott and Novelty, which adds a new landscape feature and gold trade goods.  - Cleric and Serf, compiled by Novelty, which collects the non-Families tiles from Families and with new rules for Friar and Farmhand.
 - Family Feud, by Frederick Renaud, which contains only the city tiles with shields from Families.
- Fruit Trader, by Maulei, with additional exotic fruits.
 - Dirt Road, by wellidesigns, with muddy roads that decrease the value of a road.
 - Lord of the Manor, by Scott, which adds castles to cities and farms.
 - Archery Tournament, by Scott, which adds the Jousting Tournament from the Medieval Expansion for farms.
 - Outposts, by Novelty, with a new tile feature that protects a follower from being captured by the dragon.

 - Dragon Hunters, by Novelty, which adds tiles that kills the wandering dragon.

- Fighters and Scholars, by edmil, which introduces a way of levelling up followers.
 - Cocoa Traders, by meepleater, which adds Cocoa Trade Goods.

 - Grim Reaple, by DasViktor, an expansion with graveyards and an optional Grim Reaper meeple.
 - Market Commons, the Carcassonne Central June 2009 collaborative expansion.
 - Mills and Bakeries, by jputt927, which introduces mills and bakeries.
 - Ghettos, by Novelty, with adds a tile similar to the abbey, but without the cloister.
- Roman Road and Roman Temple, the Caracassonne Central July 2009 collaborative expansion.
 - Wizards and Witches, by jputt927, which adds a bit of magic to Carcassonne.
- Fortune Teller, by jputt927, which allows more than 1 tile to be drawn.
 - Seasons, by jputt927, which produces a surprise every season.
 - The Lake, by jputt927, which adds a large lake and the race to be a lighthouse keeper.
 - Chariot Racing, by jputt927, which adds chariot races to the game.
- The King's Gate, by CKorfmann, with tiles by jputt927, allows 2 cities to be magically connected.
 - Reservoirs and Granaries, by meepleater, adds more food and farming related goodness to the game.

 - The Pope of Avignon, by wicke, which adds two tiles and a pope piece that makes cities more valuable.
- The House of Valois, by wicke, which adds two followers representing members of the French royal house of Valois.
 - The Kids are Growing Up, by wicke, which adds small followers from the travel edition of the game.
 - Noblemen, by wicke, which adds the followers from New World/Mayflower as Noblemen.
 - The Missionary, by CKorfmann, which introduces missionaries with special converting powers.
 - Hog Roast, by Joff and Novelty, which introduces a hog based on the legend of Dame Carcas.
 - Monasteries, by meepleater, which places a monastery on tile intersections.
 - Shepherds, originally by Kevin Graham, which adds sheep and shepherds to the game.
 - Architects, by Gwommy, which adds architects to the game.
 - A Horse, based on the idea by Exit191, which adds horses.
