Hi all!  :)

Game 1:
  • Jéré vs. jungleboy
  • danisthirty vs. Rosco
  • jma03 vs. MrNumbers
  • Paul vs. Decar
Game 2:
  • danisthirty vs. Paul
  • Jéré vs. MrNumbers
  • jungleboy vs. Rosco
  • jma03 vs. Decar
Game 3:
  • Rosco vs. MrNumbers
  • jungleboy vs. Paul
  • Jéré vs. jma03
  • danisthirty vs. Decar
Game 4:
  • danisthirty vs. jungleboy
  • jma03 vs. Rosco
  • Paul vs. MrNumbers
  • Jéré vs. Decar
(games can be played in any order but please post scores back to this thread so that I can keep track of the overall LP counts)

The round ends at midnight on Sunday 26th July so please ensure you have played all 4 of your games by then. If neither you nor your opponent can host then please ask me, MrNumbers or Decar and one of us should be able to leave a laptop on for you and PM/ email you the connection details.

Good luck everyone... and stay standing!  :(y)

I've never arranged a Round Robin before so in case anyone's interested I've provided some detail below around how I did this.

I started by randomising the list of player names which I did through SQL (as I was at work):

select top 8 *
from (select 'danisthirty' as p_name union
select 'jungleboy' as p_name union
select 'Paul' as p_name union
select 'jma03' as p_name union
select 'MrNumbers' as p_name union
select 'Jéré' as p_name union
select 'Rosco' as p_name union
select 'Decar' as p_name) as t1
order by newid()

This yielded the following list:
  • danisthirty
  • jma03
  • Paul
  • MrNumbers
  • Rosco
  • jungleboy
  • Jéré
  • Decar
Then I visited the “Round Robin scheduling: Even number of teams” section of this webpage (thanks Decar! :(y)) which describes a very visual model using the diagram below:

I followed the example exactly which gave me the following initial matches: 7 vs. 6, 1 vs. 5, 2 vs. 4, 3 vs. 8. Subsequent fixtures were arrived at by rotating the numbers clockwise one point around the outside of the Heptagon so I did this three times to get the next three fixtures. Hopefully this all makes sense and seems suitably fair and unbiased to everyone? I will be using the same method to arrive at the next three fixtures so that everyone will have played everyone, then I will re-order the list (randomly) and begin the process again to get the final fixture for Round 2 (ensuring of course that we don’t then end up with the same two people playing each other twice in the same round).

Any questions/ concerns please ask!

I should be able to play tonight anytime from about 19:30 CET to about 22:30 if Jéré, Rosco, Paul or Dan are available. And if there are hosts available :)

I am booked this evening. However, if I am home before 11pm I could have a game then if it's not too late.

As always, I will be in the forum and/or in irc chat when available. I am unable to host still, but my may try an alternate method if it is needed and hopefully can host.

Paul

Update: Tuesday and Thursday evenings I can play after 6:30 pm (Stockholm time).

I will probably be available for a game at some point this evening. I can't be 100% sure what time it will be as it will depend on when the kids go to bed, but should fit in with the times you've said you'll be available.

Jéré and I just played our match. It was extremely close the whole way and Jéré won by one point, 125-124!

As it came down to the last three tiles, it could have gone either way. I drew the cloister RFFF tile that Jéré had been banking on to add another farmer to the main farm, but with his next tile he drew the RRFF tile he needed to join a different farmer onto the same farm to gain the majority. With the last tile of the game I drew one of the possible tiles I needed to add one of my farmers to this 10-city farm to tie it up again. But Jéré had two other small farms that I didn't have and this was the difference in the end.

As I said in the chat, at least I only lose one point out of my 50!

Sounds like a very closely faught match! If we have many more like it it's going to take a very long time to reduce the group! But then, that's why we're doing the trial...

A pretty good game with jungleboy although I lost by 8 points  :(. He was just too much for me to handle! The tiles I drew didn't help, especially when I ran out of meeples, but jungleboy never seemed to lose control of the game and managed to make life increasingly difficult for me whilst improving his position at the same time. That's how to win games! Nice one JB  :(y)

Weird. One lone Farmer?? That has to be record low for farm scoring in a base game  ???
I just drew the perfect tile for my MonKnighThieFarmer!

Yeah, I think this was mostly because there wasn't a single farm worth more than 6 points so neither of us went for any early farmers and ended up getting our meeples tied-up elsewhere. I had the opportunity to take another 6-point farm (there were a few of them) with my last tile but I took a city instead as that was also worth 6.

I also could have placed another farmer when I put the cloister tile at the top left but I chose to place a monk instead. In the end it was worth exactly the same as the farm would have been. But yeah, the lack of farming was a curious (and, dare I say, welcome) aspect of this game, especially considering Jéré and I fought to the death over a 30-point farm in my previous game.

I just played my third game of the night, this time against Rosco. I eventually won 104-91.

Rosco deserved to win. We were fighting for a farm at the end that I needed to win outright to win the game and that Rosco only needed to tie to win the game. He put two farmers in a good position to join and just needed a basic road tile (either RRFF, RRRF or RFRF) to join either of them. I was playing catch-up by this point and there weren't many good spots to add farmers. I neutralised one of his glom-on farmers by adding my own farmer in the same adjoining farm, and with my last meeple and only 5-6 tiles left, and no better choice, I put a farmer on the left side, needing a corner road to join it to the farm (a move Rosco could have blocked if he drew the right tile). Remarkably, Rosco's simple tiles never came, and I got the corner road I needed on my second-last or last tile to win the 21-point farm and the game.
