Just seen. I was expecting an expensive price, but in my opinion this is totally unacceptable.  :o
I hope that everybody thinks the same, maybe once they will understand they won't sell a single copy, they will reconsider the price...

OK, it's official: I'm never going to complete my Carcassonne collection...!  :o

Yeah, regrettably I think I'm out too. As much as I'd love something like this, I simply can't afford that regardless of how well made the box is.

Check it out! This limited special edition - designed like a medieval book – is a must for real fans of Carcassonne!

The real fans who have 650 Euros going spare anyway... >:(

Great idea! I could probably afford a 20% share in one as long as nobody tells my wife! ;)

Agreed, I was interested, until I saw the price!
If a group wants to share custody, then I might reconsider...

I think it's really a bad commercial move and, honestly, I hope many pieces are left unsold ...

Ok! We can do it! I can put 30€... And I can take it in my home, in a sure place... I'll send you all a photo every month...  :P ;D

Title: Re: Carcassonne Special limited edition

I'll put in €20 so I can have double the reward!
With 65 people, we can all have it for about 5.6 days, including the shipping time to the next person..
When I first saw the email with it, I told myself that up to around €80 would be acceptable (or just enough to justify it to my girlfriend/not to tell her  ;)). As soon as saw the price now, I knew it was a no go

I am pretty sure they won't find 80 different persons able to spend this money and they will be forced to riconsider the price sooner or later.
The problem is HOW MUCH they can drop this price, since my willingness to pay is not exactly close to the current price... Only the "Invisible Hand" knows the answer!  ;)

I am sorry but crowdfunding is not an option in this case, we are not a museum or a tennis club where every member can take pleasure of a shared good, but a web community, we will never find an agreement about the custody of this precious item...

If they're not in a hurry to sell them why would they drop the price? It's not like they're going to go out of date. Even if it takes a year or two they'll still sell them eventually.

Judging from the information on the website it looks like these would have been very expensive to make so it might be that they can't/ won't ever drop the price if the profit margin is already quite small.

Guys, I think you have missed an important detail: they are made only "on demand". There is zero financial risk for cundco.

Indeed. I hadn't spotted that either. Well, I sort of had but it hadn't occurred to me what it might mean as things like this can often amount to nothing if they're badly translated.

So if they are having these made and there is no demand then it might just be that they decide to cut their losses after a set period of time and it becomes an even smaller print run making them even more exclusive! :-\

But I am not in a hurry to buy it, for me it is worth to check the price sometimes!

Judging from the information on the website it looks like these would have been very expensive to make so it might be that they can't/ won't ever drop the price if the profit margin is already quite small.
If the profit margin is quite small, why they decide to produce such a risky item? Suppose they paid each copy 500 €: this means they invested 50.000 € for just a 10% profit (consider VAT) in the best case they sell them all at this price. It is hard to believe...
I am pretty sure that HiG didn't pay more than 100/150 € for each copy. On the other hand, if they paid each copy 100 €, in order to get back the invested capital, it is enough to sell 20 copies; at this point, they can keep this price forever without any risk. But if they won't sell more than 2 or 3 copies in few months, maybe they will riconsider the price. For me it is not so hard to believe it: until now I didn't find a single person with this willingness to pay...

Guys, I think you have missed an important detail: they are made only "on demand". There is zero financial risk for cundco.
Are you sure about this? If it is true, there is no chance to get a smaller price.
If HiG is looking for the "most unpopular board game editor of the year", today we can already assign the prize for 2018...  >:(

You could well be right and maybe this will be what happens. However, I heard from my anonymous source (and I'm not sure whether this is classified so I'll whisper it) that they cost €400 per unit to produce. :-X

I can't speak for their financial motivation behind the decision to do this, but we have seen before that HiG are prone to making questionable business decisions in the past. At least as far as us - their fanbase - are concerned anyway. Shrug. ???

Tempted to buy a copy and then raffle it to carc central members at £10.00 a ticket. Winning ticket to be drawn in public, somewhere with other carc central members in attendance.

Not a bad idea. Looks like you'd break even at 61 tickets although you'd also have to ship it so maybe 63 to be on the safe side? If you get more than 120 you might even be able to spend your profit on a box for yourself!

I think dirk2112 said it best on your Completionism post; something something cancer analogy. This Carcassonne special edition is enough to make a cat laugh. And, you know, I would've been almost OK with purchasing had it been a re-release of the entire Carcassonne "alte kunst" collection to date. That would've been pretty enchanting. But as it stands, the base game alone isn't enough to move me. Has anyone yet brought up that this could've been a KS? I know a lot of people associate KS with small distributor/publisher outfits trying to make some cash (or at least break even) but this could've been an absolutely wild KS. I can imagine the pledge unlocks would've been channelled along the ascension of rarity, starting with basic expansions and crescendoing through Die Katharer, Die Belagerer, and Kornkreise etc. with a bunch of cool adds/mods unique to the KS. Either way I'd be pissed, given how much gold I've thrown at this obsession over such a short yawn of time... just to see it devalued with a complete and unabridged release of Carcassonne. Not that I intend to sell my set, but it's always good to look after it.

On that note, does anyone ever worry that HiG/Cundco will re-release some day? Effectively rendering a hard-won Kornkreise to as a common a tile as the base game starter. Not that it's at all a bad thing given the stultifying supply/demand at the moment, but after only recently (over)spending on some of the usual suspects it is something I think about haha

What I do wonder is: are the tiles any different? Not art-wise but is it just a regular Carcassonne copy in a beautiful box with some extras or are these tiles handcrafted as well?

Ok, that was a good one !

but frankly, this price is... i have no words. Even Smallworlds Designer Edition was cheaper, and it included every piece of the game so far... in a very limited edition.

I would never consider it missing in a Carcassonne collection, even for hardcord fans. That's just far too pricy.

Wow, talk about innovation! Nobody foresaw a profoundly over-produced retread product designed for the wealthy and/or for fools who can't think of any better way to put 650 euros on their credit card.

It's only base game??? For that price I would expect all expansions that were ever made. In a box that looks cool like this one....
Title: Re: Carcassonne Special limited edition
Post by: danisthirty on May 31, 2018, 07:10:12 AM
In an attempt to restore some semblance of balance I think it's best to focus on what HiG were probably trying to achieve with this (and what they weren't)...

My belief is that HiG were probably looking to create an ultimate/ luxury collector's edition of Carcassonne that is delivered primarily through the box that it comes in, but also with certain items like the scoretrack and the printed rules. As far as I can tell, the tiles and the meeples are exactly the same as those included with any other edition of Carcassonne. If anything, it would have been more annoying (and not particularly surprising) if they'd included a brand new old-art promo with these editions of the game making them all the more desirable to those of us who like to be complete, almost forcing us to spend the money! But thankfully they haven't done that, which makes it easier to turn this down.

It's very easy for us to question why it only includes the basic game consider the price tag, but I don't imagine this will even have occurred to HiG as this is all about presentation and exclusivity rather than it is about the contents. Quality over quantity! And let's be honest, if someone is willing to pay €649 for this edition of the game then they've probably got everything else already anyway based on how much we've seen certain Russian tiles going for recently.

Also, think how long the rules would have to be to make sure every expansion interaction was covered! The box would need to be twice the size and would cost twice as much just to cover the cost of the paper!

I contacted Udo Schmitz of Carcassonne on Tour about this bo(ok)x and he told me that the high price is purely down to the labour and materials that go into each one of these (I think it's obvious from the photos on the Cundco site that these aren't just any old mass-produced boardgame container). Udo has invested over 150 hours of his own time with the architect of the books, and said outright that this is not a big profit project for them.

Just wanted to share some of my thoughts about this now that a few days have gone by and the initial shock is behind us!

EDIT: Here are some of the comments that have been made about the new edition on Facebook (remember that we have quite an international audience there and the translate function doesn't always work that well):

Pretty, but... um... no.

Wow. {name snipped} and I have an insane Carcassonne collection and I'm balking at the price of this...

Quote from: CarcassonneCentral on Facebook
At least they did one thing right with it, adding the correct graphics to the tiles. They lost me with abandoning the correct graphics for their new incompatible expansions, though. They have spoken and they don't want me as a customer anymore.

Quote from: CarcassonneCentral on Facebook
This has officially ruined me and my completionist instincts.

72 landscape tiles, graphic artist: Doris Matthäus, size rd. 4,5cm x rd. 2mm (standard tiles), Meeples standard from the classical Carcassonne (8 Meeples each colour - colours: red, green, yellow, black, blue).

The score board is like the standard score board, only with 2 "cut" to make it small into the box.

The rules - I don't know more about it.

The box - hmm - high around an expansion box, not high like a base game box.

I was very excited when I saw the product.  The price point bothered me: even though I collect deluxe editions of the games I enjoy (like Small World Designer Edition), that'd still be by far the most I've paid for a game.

But after seeing what's in the box, I decided to pass.  Because I don't see the point of a really nice box if there's nothing special inside, and this doesn't seem special.  I know there has been relief that there weren't exclusives (and I respect that), but I was disappointed there wasn't at least some difference between the mass production meeples/tiles.... especially at that price point.

Be happy with it, I would say. It's not laid down for everyone to have one. Enjoy it :)

An exclusive version of the score board. That will have some completionists in a right pickle! Must have, must have!!!!!

It will also cure some of their completionism. I always wonder why manufacturers would want to do that.

I guess it's almost a game that we play with HiG..
How far can they go before we give up?
We've seen people that are satisfied with their collection as it is, and do not buy/acquire more versions/expansions. Some do follow and keep trying to add to their collection.
And with this special limited edition, there are people that buy it, and as I understand they are made to order, it is not a big risk.
I personally am still in doubt about it, but to be honest, the more I see of it, the less tempted I am  :o

The thing that frustrates me most here is that HiG seems oblivious to the fact that this ^ is a game that we play. The fact that Carcassonne is hugely collectable to those of us who *must* have everything is entirely lost on them. It's fair enough if they recognise this and don't care, but every time they release something like the limited-edition boxed version of Markets of Leipzig exclusively at a German hobby fair, or a special edition of the basegame in a tin box with a brand new expansion exclusive through German supermarkets, the completionists among us have a little cry. :'(

"But worry not! We'll release a version of the same expansion through Cundco at some point!" Well, thanks, but now I'm going to have to get both versions of both things, and since I don't plan to be heading to Germany any time soon I'll be heading to eBay instead, and lining the pockets of some guy who bought 10 copies of this and is now selling them for over 1000% profit. I'd rather my money went to HiG, but this isn't a game they want to play with me...

When they published that the "exclusive" edition was already available, I sent an email to HiG to ask if the content was exclusive or a normal basic game. And they replied me that normal. The price was high due to the labor for the box. They tried to reduce it as much as possible but could not lower it further. It is sad that for example Catan has an exclusive version of its components much more attractive and better for a lot less money. For me, money is not a problem, I could buy it, but evaluating the exclusivity it offers and what it really is, I can order something similar in a traditional bookbinder shop for a lot less money, even the board for points. I still really expect an exclusive edition of design tiles and meeples from HiG. Maybe for the 20th anniversary? Who knows...

I guess if someone was to buy it, he already did, anyway, here is some photos of the piece I have received recently. It is all about looks, so will not comment much. If you have questions, fire away. I just have to tell you that opening is really awkward.

Can you not just buy another one if you wanted a specific number?

I'm just glad this is only in the original artwork because I only collect the new artwork which means I don't feel compelled to buy this.

Human error. By dispatching number 100 they assumed 21-99 had been sold too!

Those were made to order. I rather think those appeared to be more unprofitable than was expected from the start.

The limited edition Carcassonne in medieval book design is available again. We have succeeded in getting another high-quality leather fur, which meets the high quality requirements. In spite of the increased costs, we keep the price for the game stable.
