Have fun dear members!

They look incredible ugly, but nevertheless.. it's a new expansion.

The farm around the Japaneese monasteries is in the CC II - new Edition.

One I think is Osaka Castle, but might be the modern Imperial Palace, it's hard to tell

The other may be the Buddha from Kamakura, it is hard to tell.  But it is the second largest Buddha in all Japan!

Funny to see that the link to carcassonne is to the normal edition.

I'm not going to buy it until anyone can show me how it looks with the normal edition..

It can't be any more jarring to see than the German Cathedrals can it?  :o 8)

EDIT:  ...and I don't find this is funny at all :(

I've bought one so i'll put some screens up on here when it arrives.

I just bought the new art Carc because i found a 1st edition box/scoreboard and the guy would only sell it to me if i replaced his box!!! (he hated the 70 point board so had made a new 50 point one anyway!)

so i bought the new art set and sent him the box as a swap!!

i think it looks like an art/proof pic rather than an actual real life photo of the tiles.

Will know more when they arrive.

The thing is, monistaries/cathedrals or any other stuff from Germany can actually somewhat be believable in terms of building style.. This is just plain silly, to be frank.

Oh boy, I hope the next expansion is fast food restaurants.  My "drive thru" meeple could get me one point for every connected road and my "restaurant manager" could give me 2 points for every city within a 5 tile radius.   :(n)

Well.  I thought the CarcII art was horrible in the base game - I guess we can see that the expansions will be even worse.  This is an easy pass.  I don't even want to buy a few copies to sell to the Japanese at a profit.

Now that they are moving to cathedrals/temples outside of Europe, I'm seriously expecting more countries depicted.
It'll be a nightmare, though. Think of about the flags emoji in iPhone.

I'm normally a "hooray for everything!" kind of guy. But I admit, even I think this is daft. Definitely one for the completionists as I can't imagine anyone really wanting to play with them. Will this be the first expansion where nobody can be bothered to translate the rules into English? Maybe. Especially if they're in Japanese to begin with.

I just bought the new art Carc because i found a 1st edition box/scoreboard and the guy would only sell it to me if i replaced his box!!! (he hated the 70 point board so had made a new 50 point one anyway!)

Bizarre! That was definitely a good deal for you!

Great idea. I think the restaurant manager meeple should get 2 (or more) points for every incomplete city mostly because it's usually only complete cities that win points for stuff like this. But also, because the construction workers building the incomplete city will be the ones who your restaurant manager benefits from the most.

Yes they do.  It is less than $5 using Paypal to have Cundco ship a small order.  If you order anything large, it gets expensive fast.

That makes so much sense.  I am sorry I didn't think of it.

Having been to more than half of the places shown on our honeymoon was a good enough reason to support it for me. Even if it's a tad funky looking.

On the plus side they're all medieval...except maybe Osaka castle....which burnt down and got rebuilt in 1932....sounds a like like the castle at carcassonne.

I think the temples could be used like cult places for Carcassonne II.

*gasp*cough*gag*uck*bleck....

Have I died? Is this Hell? Crap. Well it looks like there will be one Carcassonne expansion I won't be getting. Not only do I not want to patronise CarcII expansions, but the art on these tiles is rather subpar and I just cannot even in my wildest imagination support Japanese temples in medieval Carcassonne. Nope. Can't do it. Not going there. I already have German and Dutch Monasteries, I don't need another expansion that does the same thing, especially when that expansion is in different art and thematically wrong.

And this:
Edit: and it doesnt have a watermark.

Now that they are moving to cathedrals/temples outside of Europe, I'm seriously expecting more countries depicted.
Like France?

Besides, I collect all the Carc 2.0 expansions because I'm insane.

These will take me over 500 different tiles for Carcassonne.

I enjoyed my first game of Carc II yesterday which I'll purchase when the first big box arrives.  I'll use this with the new artwork instead of the German or Dutch/Belgian versions.

There is a Japanese language version of Carcassonne I believe, this expansion may be of interest for that market.

I hope they do many more countries, UK, New Zealand, US, Russia....maybe even some French religious sites.  ;)

I did some analysis on UK Castles a while ago, one to represent each of sovereignty of the United Kingdom.  Nothing would irritate me more than 6 castles from England.

Here's the post:
http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1523.msg19073#msg19073

I'm not sure I understand people's disgust of the theme.  If German and Dutch components are allowed to existing in a fictional South of France why shouldn't Japanese components?  Japan holds over 35 regional events to find their nation's champion which is far more than many other countries and they have produced a World Champion.  I think a Japanese expansion is quite apt and truly represents how the game of Carcassonne has spread across the globe, joining nations together with a common sport.

As it stands, in my opinion, the art isn't fantastic, but thematically I think it's great.

these are great! However, i'd argue you're missing one of the most beautiful castles in the world. Eileen Donan. and then i'd put in conwy castle as well as it's your quintessential looking castle and also because i spend a lot fo time there it's probably my fave.

i totally agree. Carcassonne, although a French town, is a German game and a worldwide phenomenon. I'd love to see these mini expansions from all over the world echoing how global this game truly is. I mean, I travelled through South America and saw it in many hostels and bars out there!

I can see things have changed since this first posted.

The 3 phases of Carcassonne addiction:
1. Realizing an expansion is pointless, ridiculous, ugly, or in this case all 3.
2.  Making a few arguments as to why it isn't completely horrible.  I mean it's better than a sharp stick in the eye right?
3.  Ordering from Cundco

So, looks like these were added to the website in error and will only be available at Spiel '16:

Sadly there has been a misunderstanding with our partner in Japan. Due to this issue, the temples will not be availbale before fall this year, starting with "Spiel2016" in Essen. All orders already taken and beeing payed, will be shipped of course. We are very sorry for the inconvienience.

I knew i should have ordered a few of them!!!

well, at least they are honoring the orders!

Am I right in thinking that the rules are the same as monasteries? I think that's what it said on the website. But does that mean we now have, in Carcassonne II, 'Abbots' (special follower) and 'Abbots' (a follower on a monastery)?
Title: Re: New Expansion: Japanese Temples!
Post by: Decar on April 19, 2016, 10:25:05 AM
We'll have to wait and see the site said 'like monasteries'

And can an Abbot be placed on a Monastery - and if so can it be withdrawn early to score?

The rules are the same as for German and Belgian monasteries, with a bit of confusion over calling the occupier of the building an abbot or a keeper!

Quote
Abbot: You place the follower onto the monastery as a keeper.

That's going to get confusing for those less familiar with the game, given that we already have an abbot meeple, but it is not the meeple depicted in the picture. Obviously the intention is that normal followers are used as keepers, not the abbot meeple, but use of the word abbot here is going to make people question. Now there's a spanner in the works.

Here is Kaminarimon - The Thunder Gate:

Here is Daibutsu Kamakura - The Great Buddha of Kamakura

Here is inside the Great Buddha:

They actually don't really look like carcassonne 2.0 tiles, if you look at the cloister in the right upper corner. you can see that the road is the same.
The color of green also matches better to Carc 1.0.

I think i can live with it to play it with carc 1.0 better then carc 2.0 (although the buddha really looks different to me)

Ha ha, great work. This tickled me too.

For me, the tiles looked much better than I was expecting. And although I agree that they certainly don't go with the Winter Edition, in my opinion they fit similarly well with either the old or new artwork which is definitely a good thing. So they're a big :(y) from me!

I am counting them as in my Carc 2.0 collection, do we know for sure which artist illustrated these tiles?

Nothing on the instruction sheet?

I'd say the fit similarly badly. At least the colour of the gras is awful. Still, they must fit the German Cathedrals well. :D

I think the tiles are designed with new artwork. At least the field is clearly Carc 2. And also the street doesn't look exactly like the Carc 1 street on the picture, but more like one of the Carc 2 streets.

Sorry icydarkstary - PM's are always a bit funny - when ever I go in they all get marked as read even if I didn't read them :(

I had some small information about Japanese Temples -  The expansion was designed by someone in Japan, it was known to be coming - but the details were secret and the date unknown; so my email surprised them.

Most of you know what the Temples are, but this is some nice information from my contact:
1) kinkaku-ji in Kyoto it means "Temple of the Golden Pavilion".
2) kaminari-mon in Tokyo(near sensō-ji) it means "lightning gate".
3) gojyu-no-tō in Nara It means "Five-story pagoda".
4) Himeji castle in Hyōgo
5) goryōkaku in Hokkaidō it means "Five-sided fortification".
6) Daibutsu,kamakura

Here are the rules and the tiles next to some other tiles in a fake game.

http://imgur.com/a/BJNka

(the other two pages of the rules are just Wikipedia articles of the buildings. Literally, the source on the pages is Wikipedia)

Don't be fooled by the pictures, the grass colors don't exactly match (although it's pretty close). Also note the rules actually show the Japanese buildings in the old art style (not the tile pictures, the diagrams and examples), when these were clearly in 2.0 style.

I don't think I'll remove the old monasteries as the rules suggest. I don't really see why, unless you were short on time or something. Drawing one of these late game seems like you could easily net a ton of points, especially if the river is being used and you have a couple of long stretches of land.

Intersting that this expansion was made for the original art but them moved to the new art. It definitely shows this expansion has been in the works for a while and that it was a conscious effort by Hans im Glück to make it the first promo expansion in new art. Kind of weird, though, and I have to question using Wikipedia for the sources. Is Wikipedia the source for the Japanese rules, too?

Doris Mathäus didn't do the feature art, did she? That would be a weird amalgam if she did.

here are the last few pages, showing Wikipedia being used as a source for the historical context

I couldn't find anything in the directions on who did the art.

This expansion is kind of weird.

They were so lazy that they literally copy-pasted the Wikipedia link for the final entry without first checking how stupid that link appears. Typing in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kōtoku-in (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kōtoku-in) is a much better and cleaner way of getting to that page, and it looks better too. Poor HiG, they don't use Apple Computers because if they did, they would know that "Option-A" + "o" makes "ō" on the International keyboard. Or they could have just copy/pasted the link from any non-Internet Explorer browser.

Why do you all think its new art? The grass is so much different from the carc 2.0 version.

True. But still, they made the effort to at least try to make something.

Other than being slightly different green colored, the grass is Carc 2 grass. The roads are also Carc 2 roads.

I guess your opinion is as good as mine,  but I prefer nothing than a botched job. And we already have 2 similar expansions in the Monasteries serie, which isn't nothing... so there is no rush to release another one. I'd buy Igloos in Greenland if it is correctly done :D

Just had a chance to play a 4 player game with these.

Uhh... they are not really balanced at all for slightly large decks. The River + Traders and Builders + Inns and Cathedrals + The Maze + the original monasteries because why not? + a second pack of 8 city tiles I bought and this thing is just broken. If you never draw one, you simply cannot win when people are getting 25+ points per Japanese Temple on huge, congested boards on long streaks of tiles, due to the River.

There's is absolutely no reason to take this as an Monastery. I can't think of any situation where you'd want to give up 25+ points for a potential 9 points, unless you were down to just your Phantom or something and didn't want to bog it down all game.

So everything you say applies to the German monasteries or Belgian monasteries or presumably Elbonian High Places.

First;ly it is harder with 4 players. With 2 you are likely to at least get say 2 of them. Also the more they invest into long term stuff the more you can invest into farms and cities. Also it may be possible to block the growth of monasteries influence - especially effective if they are on the same line. I'm not convinced it's unbalanced.

Also there is the choice of expansions. You had the labyrinth, right? That definitely sucks meeples out of the game. When the labyrinth comes up again it might be possible to trap the opponents meeples in the labyrinth rather compete. Sure you still losie out on points. But committing a meeple for the whole game is its own cost.

Also there are other expansions that balance things out a little. Towers allow you to capture an abbot. Very nice if done to a long-time abbot. Fliers enable you to get in on the act after the fact.

Also the original rules say the special monasteries should displace the normal ones but we have never played that.

Edit: It should have been "The Most Sacred Shrines of Elbonia that look exactly like Mens' Restrooms Expansion Including Statue to the Monkey God Oobanoobah". I had a game yesterday with 42 points for a monastery.  But we couldn't take all 6 of them because of the lack of meeples.. When you draw 1 near the end of the game it's a bit harder to get more then 15 points for it. this because you need to place it on the edge of your board..

Perhaps include P & D next time so that you can at least attack them with the dragon and stand a chance of re-claiming with a magic portal?

Don't own it. Not out in the US yet, in Carc 2 style.

It's not out in the UK yet either but it's available from Cundco if you don't mind having the box and rules in German.

Wow, I found out about this a bit late. Why though? Why Japanese temples in a game about Medieval France? Also the colors. Thought about maybe picking it up for at-least the star shaped title, but that clash man.

If you missed out on these Japanese Temples the first time round and cannot wait until it is properly released after Essen, I have acquired an extra copy as a freebie with my South Seas auction tiles (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1205.msg41948#msg41948).

If you would like them then send me a PM and if you are the lucky winner we can sort something out. I am not looking for any money for them, other than postage if you live far away! :)

EDIT: These have now been claimed!
