Title: NEW Complete Annotated Rules
Post by: obervet on May 22, 2015, 11:09:54 AM
It's that time again! Brand new CARs! What can you find in the new Standard CAR?

New expansions? Check! Both the Castles in Germany and the Russian Promo tiles.

The most recent clarifications? Of course!

Better organization? You bet! I've put the mini-expansions in alphabetical order, and I've also consolidated expansions with different names but the same rules (Crop Circles I and II, Siege things, Heretics).

The Winter CAR now has a section for the digital winter version (removed from the standard CAR), and I also made an addition to the Order of Play.

I honestly don't know why you're still reading this. You do this every time. Go get them!

Thanks obervet! Great work as always.

Sorry to be the first to do this, but I spotted a tiny mistake: on p.125 under the Castles in Germany headline it says the original release date was 2014, when it should be 2015.

Excellent! No more internet searching for German Castles rules. Wahoo!

Minor edits: Layers on page 126 are mixed. The text boxes are beneath the image layer so they appear blurry. Also, the cover does not have any of the Castle tiles on it. Also, there's no mention of the "wildcard" Crop Circle Halfling tile on the Crop Circles pages. I know it isn't technically a part of that expansion, but a reference to the tile may be good. In fact, it may be a helpful idea for a future edition of the CAR to always note on an expansion page when elements from an expansion appear in a different expansion. I'd appreciate it for sure.

Great as always. Merit for you! Also like the new structure, although an other approach might have been, to list the 6 "numbered" Minis separately, because they had a wider distribution through retail sale and also a reprint in Big Box 4. But this would also mean to cover River I separately, since with all the base game editions including that expansion, it is probably the most common one. So keeping everything alphabetically might be more consistent.

One really minor thing is the watermark, you put next to the headline of "River I", which is in fact only included in the "2014 version", in which paragraph it is even mentioned, that it has a new watermark. So for sake of clarity I would suggest to put the watermark rather next to the headline of that section, than to the top of the mini expansion.

Have read over that paragraph before, but would definitely endorse that idea.

Another minor addition, which could be added to footnote 22 for clarification:
This is important when playing with The Flier or The wagon.
I myself know this, but constantly tend to forget it in play, as once again in a game for the A&M League, where I gave away 8 or 9 points by completing the 4 road cloister with the same tile as the road with my wagon on it, adjacent to it.

I have made essentially all tweaks suggested above to future versions of the CAR.

I did not change the position of the watermark on River I. It is true that not all versions of River I have the watermark, but older versions of some of the other early expansions don't have watermarks either. Consider it an HiG retcon -- all of them would have had the watermark if they had thought of it back then. The way I figure it, if you see the watermark, you know you have that expansion (ignoring the Spielbox pentagons). If you don't see the watermark, you have to use other clues. In other words, it's a specific test, just not necessarily a sensitive one.

I knew not everyone would agree with the way I did the minis. However, I feel that most people can figure out where the Goldmines come in the alphabet, but most people probably don't remember which mini number that is. (I was pretty sure it was #4, but even I had to look just now to confirm it.) So for ease of finding them, ABC order seemed most intuitive. The whole point was not to alienate people who are new to the game, and special ordering of a few seemingly arbitrary mini-expansions would be more confusing than it's worth in my mind.

That's true, I think all of the pre-A&M expansion didn't get a watermark on at least there first print. However, "The River" only has the watermark on the 2014 Big Box variant. The version, you get now at CundCo, and even the reprint in "Carcassonne 2" do not have any watermark. Also, the way you describe the BB variant might confuse people: Additionally, the backs of the river tiles in this version are the light gray of standard tiles rather than the dark gray of starting tiles, and there is a new watermark on the front. A "new watermark" might be interpreted as a different watermark then before. And considering that, it's likely, that people owning the BB5 version are wondering, what type they got, since their tiles are in every aspect as described in the 2014 paragraph, but still with the "old" watermark, depicted at the top of the River chapter.

I would at least alter the text then: Additionally, for the first and currently only time, the backs of the river tiles in this version are the light gray of standard tiles rather than the dark gray of starting tiles, and there is a watermark on the front.

The watermarks for expansions - starts with the first BigBox from 2006.
This BigBox included: base game, 1.-4. expansion.

I am working on  configuring a smaller custom deck and would just to to say that the Symbols and Features section of the S-CAR has been really useful when considering how to put the deck together.

Title: suggested revision to S-CAR footnote
Post by: loki on June 19, 2015, 01:34:00 PM
Carcassonne Standard CAR ver. 7.4 Page 11

3  As far as the Big Box is concerned, the sixth set of (gray) followers is a part of the basic game,
not Inns and Cathedrals. Additionally, Big Box 5 adds purple and pink followers for up to 8 players.

It should perhaps acknowldege that Big Box 5 purple and pink followers are not a full sets.

Well, they have all of the purple and pink parts that you need to play what's in the box.

Would it be possible to share the original file? (word or what ever format)
I would like the oppurtunity to add some fan-expansion rules before I print it. PDF to word conversion do not work well with the section and chapter breaks.

Welcome to the forum a94marbo.  The CAR is intended to document official and semi-official expansions to Carcassonne.  The interactions of each expansion is carefully considered during documentation.  I suspect obervet would be worried that rogue-copies would start to be shared, which may contain inaccuracies he is unable to control.  The contents of the CAR changes sequence and order between iteration too; so you may find it impossible to keep yours up to date.

There are lots and lots of fan expansions, so adding them to the CAR doesn't seem right. Perhaps it would be worth separating them into a different document. The Fan Annotated Rules, perhaps?  Maybe this is something you would like to do. Which expansions were you thinking of including?

Ok, I was thinking to use it only for myself, just to have everything collected into the same booklet. I had no ambition to update it everytime something changed. This is a one-print occation : )

I have made tiles for: Forests, Log Cabin, Forest Fire!, Wells, Fountain of Youth and Die Stadtore.

I have re-written the rules into the same format as in CAR and was trying to figure out how to paste them in and update the List of content... : )

Sounds like a great list.

I'd definitely like to see a sister document, that way it could be extended easily too.
I bet a few others would like a document like that too; so your work wouldn't be just for you :D

Let us know how we can help :)
(make sure to reference original authors etc).

I'd like to see a sister document.  The fan expansions that I have looked at on Carc Central are definitely worthy of publication.
I've created a few expansions of my own but not sure they'd be good enough but I'd happily offer them up for consideration.

Sorry if I'm in the completely wrong place, it's my first post.  I would really like to buy the Carcassonne Big Box 2014 - Grundspiel mit Fluss & 4 Erweiterungen [German Version] from Amazon for my son and his partner, whose family have a holiday home near Carcassonne in France.  I think they'd really enjoy the game but I don't know where to find the rules in English to download and print.  I've spent a long time researching but there are so many variations I'm finding it really confusing.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Hello Debbyg, and welcome to the forums! :) :(y)

So as I understand it you're looking to buy a Carcassonne set for your son and his partner for Christmas. Sounds like a good idea to me! However, I'm keen to know why you've chosen the 2014 Big Box for them, especially if they have no prior experience of the game? There's nothing wrong with it of course, it's just that there is another Big Box (Big Box 5) which was released more recently and should be easier to find.

With regards to the rules, these will be provided in the box for every expansion that's included in the box. If you're after English rules then you can either make sure you buy it from Z-Man games (the English language distributor) or you can just download the CAR (Complete Annotate Rules) which is a handy document for any Carcassonne player as it includes references to all of the expansions, as well as lots of other Carcassonne things.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to post again if you have anything else to consider or are seeking any further guidance!

Good luck with your decision! :)

I have a (very picky) observation:

page 12, "At least one side of the new tile (with a red border in the examples below) must touch one or more tiles already in play.7 Corner-to-corner placement is not permitted."

page 13: note #8: "Cloisters can be placed directly next to each other, or corner to corner. It is not necessary for there to be eight other (non-cloister) tiles neighbouring a cloister. A cloister stands in the middle of a field segment and other segments can be placed next to it. In contrast to roads, cities, and fields, it is not possible to connect to a cloister."

I find note 8 to be confusing in its wording; it seems overly specific to get across the point of "It does not matter which tiles are neighbouring a cloister" or "the presence of one cloister does not forbid you from placing another cloister near it."  Was this wording added in response to specific questions?

Lastly, as a Canadian I find the spelling of "neighbouring" to be precisely correct.

Hello mPony!

I hope this will clarify these:

• page 12 note 7: This rule is for tiles in general, meant for any tile from any expansion regarding tile placement. They have to be placed side by side (up, right, down or left of a tile but not in any of the four corners such as upper left etc.)

Edited this to simply things.
• page 13 note 8: This rule is for cloisters specifically meaning you can place a cloister next to another cloister. Again, it's up, right, down or left of another tile (any tile). After having the tile placed and another cloister already exist adjacent this recently placed cloister, even diagonally, it's still a legal placement.

This note hopefully makes more sense as to why it exist when you are using Shrines where there is a limit to how you can place a cloister / shrine tile.

very good clarification of language, there.  Well done.

I've been playing the game for a few years now but only very recently found this forum. At first I thought "Why are they compiling this rulebook? Aren't the rules specified?"  Now I better understand your motivations :)  I wish I'd found this forum years ago!

I have to say I think there is an issue with the contents on the current version. It would be nice to be able to go straight from the contents to the relevant page.
