Title: 2019 Basegame League - Round 2
Post by: danisthirty on January 30, 2019, 02:40:09 PM
Round 2

The full list of all fixtures for Rounds 1 to 11 (including results from previous rounds) can be found here: http://tournamentscheduler.net/schedule/NzAwODE4MjQzNg (but please don't play any of your opponents from any future rounds yet as we're going to take it one round at a time).

Please aim to play your match as soon as you're able to, but let's aim to have the round wrapped-up before the end of next week (Sunday 10th Feb). If we finish earlier than this, we will of course move on to Round 3 without any further ado!

Good luck to everyone; and when you do get round to playing your match please don't forget to post the results and any screenshots you have here on this post! Thanks C:-)

Having been nearly the last to finish round one I am pleased to be the first player to finish game 2.

Bekse 80 Riker 74
Riker 110 Bekse 94

The first game was two tiles away from completion with Bekse set to win when the game disappears. We agreed the score would most likely have been 80 - 74. Bekse cleverly created a 50/50 chance to guarantee a big farm and I could not catch up tinkering around the edges with other points. Sorry, no screenshot because the game seemed to stop working.

In game two I feel sure I had much the better of the tile draw as I kept seeming to get pieces I needed while Bekse got long runs of unhelpful tiles. As a result I was able to dominate a big farm and add extra cities to it near the end.

I feel like I am playing a bit slower than my two opponents so far. Sorry in advance if you feel my play is slow!

Well done for getting your match played so quickly guys!

That's a shame. I assume you were using the online server when it crashed? When games crash on the online server it's sometimes possible to save the game (Session - Save Game or Cntrl + S) but you can only load and continue them if one of the players (or a third party) is able to host from their own laptop. It's not a big deal if you were that close to the end and could both agree on a likely outcome, but it's worth considering for next time...

I feel like I am playing a bit slower than my two opponents so far. Sorry in advance if you feel my play is slow!

Don't worry about that until you get to the world championships and are playing with timers ;)! Some of us like to make sure everything has been considered before placing our tiles, others are more instinctive and play more quickly. In a friendly but fierce competition like this, everyone should be considerate of this.

Here are the results for the Round 2 games between  :red-meeple: MrNumbers and  :blue-meeple: dronedrone

Game 1 -  :red-meeple: Mr Numbers 84  :blue-meeple: dronedrone 92
Game 2 -  :blue-meeple: dronedrone 62   :red-meeple: MrNumbers 78

Game 1
dronedrone built up an early lead with some small Cities and smaller Roads maintaining this advantage for most of the game.   The latter part became a contest for a 12-point field with dronedrone out of Meeples and MrNumbers poised to take it but, unfortunately, as is often the case, the right tiles went to the wrong player and the game ended with an 8-point victory for dronedrone.

Game 2
A similar pattern to Game 1 but with Mr Numbers taking an early lead and trapping two of dronedrone's Meeples in Monasteries for the rest of the game.   dronedrone pulled the tiles that MrNumbers needed to glom the big City and spent his energy in an epic battle for what turned out to be a 21-point field which MrNumbers won with four Farmers to dronedrone's three.

Thanks to MrNumbers who stayed up until around midnight to finish the second game.

Another close match ending in a draw. I am posting the pictures and Jack is doing the clever bit as I am old and worn out after 2 tough games of Carcassonne.  ;D

Unusually both games were away wins.

Game 1: JackFace  :green-meeple: 64 v TheSteveAllen  :yellow-meeple: 71
Game 2: TheSteveAllen  :yellow-meeple: 97 v JackFace  :green-meeple: 107

Thanks for the match Jack and best of luck in the rest of your matches.

Did you arrange a time to play with him? I thought you were playing earlier in the week but kept missing each other?

Anyway, on to my match with Leven:

Game 1:

As fun as this game was (for me), it wasn't one of the best that Leven and I have played. The tiles were definitely on my side and as Leven began to feel the game sliding away from him he took increasingly risky chances which never seemed to pay off. As nice as it is to draw all the tiles that I needed, as well as the ones that Leven needed, it didn't feel like a very balanced game and although I was very happy to take the win I did feel that if this had happened during a game in person I could rightly have been accused of rigging the tiles!

Game 2:

This was quite a long game (it took about an hour) with lots of contemplations from both sides. Leven was always quick to leap on any opportunity to block one of my meeples and although I was usually able to defend myself I was always on the back foot with regards my meeples as Leven always seemed to have more at his disposal than I did. This said, I never completely ran out so didn't skip too many points.

In the end, the luck was fairly evenly balanced with both of us picking up most of the tiles we needed (significantly the final cccr for Leven). This meant the scores were generally close throughout; often there were just a few points between us.

In the closing stages of the game I was ahead by a handful of points, but had two farms to myself and was sharing the top farm with Leven. With three tiles left to place he attacked this farm and won it outright with the last tile of the game which secured him a 2-point victory.

So the match was 1 - 1 with +39 PD to me and -39 PD to Leven

LaplazadeCarcassonne - please let me know when you have some time to test your instance of JCloisterZone.

I am working from home today so have time between now and 3pm, or this evening. Please let me know.

If JCloisterZone worked for you before when you played Leven then it should be working just as well now.

Sorry for the delay everyone, but things are back on track!

LaplazadeCarcassonne is back in the mix now that we've resolved his difficulties with JCloisterZone and he is due to play his match with Halfling on Friday. Meanwhile, the long-awaited clash between Rosco and Sinscerly is scheduled to take place this evening!

All being well I'll kick off Round 3 at some point over the weekend.

Thanks everyone for your involvement in Round 2. We didn't charge through with quite the same dizzying pace as we did the first round but everyone's still onboard (and able to play) which is what matters, so without any further ado let's get Round 3 underway!

Well, OK a little bit of further ado. But only so we can glimpse at the end of round standings for a few moments:

(just realised that I forgot to change the "standings after Round 1" sub-heading to say "standings after Round 2" so please pretend I did that) ::)

It's still early in the competition but it's good to see that everyone has now won at least one game out of the four we've all played so far. This isn't surprising considering the strength of the field, nor is it surprising to see just how little there is between top and bottom; nothing that couldn't be reversed within the next couple of rounds anyway. Interesting to see how things lie at the end of the next round...

Round 3 is now live! You can access the thread for it, including fixture list, by following this link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4218.msg62070#msg62070).
