10 Games to describe the Hobby
« on: August 07, 2018, 05:31:04 AM »
We've been inundated with top 10 games lists.  We even made out own

But TheSteveAllen is attempting to, in his words on Slack: "stick with a game until I feel like I understand it well enough to be able to give a good game to a regular player"

Which made me think, what ten games best describe the hobby?

This is somewhat different from your favourite games, as it allows you consider games you might not like, but you know are solid designs.
I kind of think this is a list of games to should try, to get a board feel of the boardgaming hobby:

  • Carcassonne - competitive tile layer
  • Ticket To Ride - set collection
  • Catan - dice rolling / trading
  • Pandemic - co-operative
  • Dominion - deck building
  • 7 Wonders - drafting
  • Castles of Burgundy
  • Stone Age - Worker placement
  • Skull King - trick taking  ;D
  • Battleline - war game / area control

I feel my selection may be tending on the older games, but I feel all of these titles stand the test of time.
What 10 games describe the hobby for you?

That looks like a strong list to me, even if I don't particularly enjoy some of them.

I would suggest that Colt Express probably deserves a place on the list somewhere though, particularly as there aren't any other games on the list where "programming" is a core mechanic as it is with CE.

I see there are 9 different 'classes' of game plus Castles of Burgundy. Are there any other classes of game to consider?

I.e. where do Hive or Panic Mansion get slotted?

Is Kingdomino a tile layer?

Boarsgame geek lists about 40 different mechanics.  This is a chance for you to list 10 games you think best describe the hobby!

In describing our hobby I would mention a list very similar to Decar’s list.

Carcassonne
Catan
TTR
Stone Age (also just as likely to at least mention Lords of Waterdeep and Agricola)
Pandemic - coop
Dominion - drafting
One night Ultimate werewolf  - party
Crokinole - dexterity
Alhambra – layered design elements
Kingdom Builder – Area control

For me mechanism was something explored further down the road. I tended to stick to the ones I knew I liked.

In practice I start with a list one step lower than even the examples above. These are less likely to be recognized so that is why there are two different lists. There is a chance that muggles have at least heard the names on the top list!

Maybe this is a different list but in reality my introductory games are more like these:

Tsuro / Patchwork / Kingdomino – abstract / simple tile laying
Sushi Go – drafting
TTR – set collection
Century Spice road / Splendor -
Azul – Abstract. Good to add in some hotness so they don’t feel like they’ve missed the boat
Kingdomino – another simple tile layer
Forbidden Island – coop. don’t know what it is, maybe because it was our 1st coop, we still adore this little treasure
Codenames – party game
Tumblin Dice – party style dexterity game
Diamonds – classic trump style card game
Franks

Wanna play Carc? Can we add just one more expansion?
