Title: Carc's 15th Birthday: Sign a tile for KJW
Post by: danisthirty on November 02, 2015, 08:00:33 AM
Next year will be Carcassonne’s 15th birthday, and with such an important occasion on the horizon I thought it would be good if we did something as a community to celebrate this and pay tribute to Carcassonne’s creator – Klaus-Jürgen Wrede – in the process... :(y)

Klaus-Jürgen has signed a great many things over the years; tiles, boxes, postcards, stickers... you name it, he’s signed it! And he’s always keen to hear from his game’s fans too. With this in mind, I thought it would be nice to do something similar for him, but in reverse where fans like us sign tiles of our own and give them to him. That’s the basic premise anyway.

All you need to do to be included is to simply take any tile from the basic game or an official expansion (classic artwork), sign your name on the front of it and post it to me (PM me for my address if you don’t already have it). I’m hoping for a good response to this so that I can arrange all the signed tiles into a big landscape, stick them down onto a sheet of cardboard and have it framed and ready to present to Klaus-Jürgen at the big fan-meeting in Essen next year. This means I need your help to ensure that this succeeds.

I would urge as many people as possible to take part in this, even though it requires you to sacrifice a single tile and post it to me. If enough people take part, I’m sure the end result will be very impressive and will serve as an excellent thank you present from us as a community to Carcassonne’s creator himself! Plus there’s the opportunity to make an accompanying booklet including the names, locations and photos (if you wish to include a photo of yourself with your tile) of everyone who has helped us to make history: most signed tiles in a single game of Carcassonne! Don’t miss your chance...

Please let me know your thoughts about this: good, bad or ugly, or feel free to ask if you have any questions. Here’s hoping I receive a tile signed by you in the near future! :)

@Paul & @Guy - great to have you both on board! :) :(y)

Not a silly question at all. I think it's entirely up to you so you should sign whichever you prefer, or both. I will probably sign my name as Dan "is thirty" Chard 8)

Now I just need to choose what tile I'm going to sign. It'd be good to see an interesting mix of tiles and expansions used across the board as the landscape I create from them will be all the more beautiful for it!

That's the spirit! :) You can always use their tile replacement service if you really don't have anything you can spare. That's 0.2 Euros for any tile from the base game.

Random aside question: Do they let you purchase the 12 tiles of the new River expansion via this service, or only base game tiles?

I'll go for a tile from Inns & Cathedrals.

I can give a tile from King and Robber. Any preferences, maybe? (taking into account that you, Dan, have to build one solid picture with that tiles)

Good question. I've only ever ordered missing tiles from the base game, but the text makes it sound like they possibly would match tiles from more commonly available expansions too if it's described properly. You might have to specify that you'd like it in the old artwork too, just in case.

I'll go for a tile from Inns & Cathedrals.

Thanks Halfling, and good choice! I & Cs has some very interesting tiles! Will reply to your PM in a moment.

Thanks MrNumbers! Any tile should be fine, the challenge will be trying to ensure that as much as possible is completed...

This is a neat concept and I'd like to contribute if everyone else is, but the actual idea itself has created a small personal dilemma for me.

To be more specific: I don't like signed tiles.

I love the artwork of the tiles (though not the new version obviously  >:D  >:D), and to me a signed tile is a ruined tile. I also don't have any spare tiles, so I'd have to order a tile and then 'ruin' it to contribute to this project.

So, I'm not sure what to do.

I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't think KJW will see it as a ruined tile as it's all about the gesture and showing a bit of appreciation for the game and for his ongoing support over the years.

Now I feel bad about that signed tile I sent you! :P

Yes that's true. As someone who has signed many tiles over the years, I'm sure he will appreciate it. But I'm trying to be selfish here!  >:D

Haha, not at all. I can use it for your giveaway next year.

I like this idea a lot! I'm pondering if my girlfriend and I should take the lake and spring tiles from The River I and sign them so you have the possibility to build at least one river... :) But then I would have to buy an extra river or order from Cundco. What do you all think?

Just send the spring, if nobody else sends the lake the river will flow out of the picture ...

Good advice! I can plug any awkward gaps with unsigned tiles from my own collection, but I'd like to keep this to a minimum if possible. Rivers can flow off to the side of the picture if necessary...

You can count me in! I have incomplete set of Traders and Builders, so you can expect tile with pigs watermark.

Not a silly question at all. I think it's entirely up to you so you should sign whichever you prefer, or both. I will probably sign my name as Dan "is thirty" Chard 8)

I know this is no where near the subject of this thread, but please forgive me as my world has been turned upside down.  I feel as though my senses are not rooted in reality anymore.  I'm not sure what is true and what isn't, what is fact and what is fiction.  Is there really 'no spoon'?  Is the sky blue?  Is blue a real color?  Apparently, ancient peoples didn't think so, maybe they were right!

Up until this moment, I was sure that I had a friend "across the pond", named Daniel Chard, who shares my love of the game of Carcassonne (though his is much more passionate than mine), a ruggedly handsome man with a propensity for distinguished (read manly) facial hair like my own, a family man, someone who plays with the most obvious and appropriate color choice (blue), but is not so proud as to not relinquish it upon request, a man whose very meeple likeness holds a mug in it's hand bearing witness to the fact that the moniker he has chosen for himself, the one that all of us have come to know and love, is danisthirsty... T-H-I-R-S-T-Y... THIRSTY!

And why shouldn't he be thirsty?  The human body is made up of 65% water.  Some doctors believe that we are not sick, we're thirsty.  I don't know who is chasing him, but Dan likes to run which makes you thirsty.  Little children can tax a man even as healthy and virile as Dan, causing thirst.  Perhaps the environment is more arid in London?  Perhaps it's a spiritual metaphor of some kind.  Maybe he just really likes coffee!

It's not April, and it's not even the first of the month, but I know someone must be playing a trick on me.  Please tell me that I am not the only one to KNOW this and BELIEVE it as FACT!  Up until about 2:30pm est on the 3rd of November, 2015 that is.  Excuse my while I go pinch all my children...

Ha ha. Not sure what I can say to that! :))

If it helps, I'm on the verge of renaming myself as I'm usually thirsty at least once per day yet I haven't been thirty for years. I might also have to have the cup removed from my meeple. :@

At risk of causing us to veer off topic even more drastically though, why didn't ancient people believe that blue was a real colour? :blue-meeple:

I have gone for the left tile from The School, because I used to be a Maths teacher (though I didn't stick with it very long!).

If anyone wants to sign the tile on the right then we can complete the pair. I will send Dan an unsigned right tile anyway, so that the landscape can be completed either way.

And yes, for a long time I also thought that Dan was "thirsty" rather than "thirty" :D

After seeing everyone else's comments, I have realised that:

A) I'm a douchebag.
B) This really is quite a cool idea.

I want some big cities in this thing so I'll order and sign the CCCC tile from the base game next time I make a Cundco order.

@jungleboy: Excellent news, welcome aboard!

@JT Atomico: I like your idea re: the School. It’s great that you can select a tile that has some personal significance too.

In terms of tile selection, I’m hoping for a wide range of tiles in order to make the landscape as interesting as possible. I realise that there probably aren’t going to be a lot of signed corner road (ffrr) tiles but if I have to sacrifice a box or two to fill it out then it will be worth it. Please consider city caps and splitters when making your decision though, as these will always be put to good use. :) :(y)

Just for the record, I’m going to be using a Flier tile as I now have a spare box of these having bought it again for this year’s forum photo games. I’ll sign it and scan it tonight...

Also, don’t forget that there’s going to be a little book to accompany it so that KJW can see photos of all the people who have signed these tiles and know a little more about them. If you’d like to be included in this please send me a photo of yourself (perhaps holding your signed tile?) along with your name, location (broadly speaking: country will do) and a short summary of how you started playing Carcassonne or what it is you most enjoy about it. If you prefer to submit a tile without being included in the book then this is fine too, but I think this will be a nice personal touch so please consider it if you haven’t already.

Since I intend for it to be presented to KJW at Essen next year there is certainly no rush yet. It would be nice if I'd got everything together by, say, the middle of next year though.

For example - I have many tiles in my collection - perhaps I have the tiles double which you want to sign for the great landscape.

Thanks for the offer! If you have 2-3 spare tiles with roads only (especially the RRRR with bridge from I&C) I will take them. That way Dan will get some roads for his landscape, because most people will probably sign city tiles.

Hi all.

I now have tiles from the following:

- JT Atomico
- Halfling (+2 friends)
- Rosco
- kettlefish
- danisntthirsty

Thanks to everyone who has sent tiles so far. ;D

Our friends at CarcF are on board too, so it looks like it's going to end up being pretty huge! If you'd like to join in with this venture but can't spare a tile (or order one from Cundco) then kettlefish may be able to help. She has a list of spare tiles which I will post later; PM her if you'd like one, quoting the code of the tile you'd like her to send you...

Next year is the 15th birthday of "Spiel des Jahres" for the game Carcassonne.
There will be a big members meeting in Germany - Essen on Thursday 13.10.2016 in the evening after the exhibition day at "Spiel 2016".

danisthirty has a great idea:
the members sign some tiles and send these to danisthirty.
He will create a landscape glue it onto cardboard and framed it.
This framed landscape will be a gift for the author of Carcassonne: Klaus-Jürgen Wrede.

Here is the link to the topic at CarcC:
Carc's 15th Birthday: Sign a tile for KJW (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2162.0)

If you like to help here out, please let me know.
If you need some tiles which you can sign, I have enough tiles double and will send them to you.

Greetings
kettlefish

Yes sounds like a good idea!

So - that means - gantry is also a part of this action. And he is still alive.

Quick update on this as I've had lots of people asking for my address but haven't had so many tiles turning up lately... :(

The most recent addition to the collection is a German Castle from PresetM (CarcF) but I'm hoping that there will be many more over the next couple of weeks, including a batch of tiles signed by those at a recent fan-meeting in Germany.

Keep them coming guys! :(y)

I've done a thorough search of my Carcassonne collection and I unfortunately don't have a single spare tile except Castles that I just received from Klaus, one of which is signed by him. I have a few spares in the US, but they are packed away. In addition, my CundCo order is still stuck someplace and I ordered that just before this proposal was made, so I didn't order a spare tile for the map. Sorry, Dan! Unless I can send a signed Castle back, I don't have anything to send for this.

Perhaps you can sign one of the tiles from your base game (shudders...) and then someone might be able to replace it for you if you tell them which tile it was; like maybe someone who has a few thousand tiles laying around... not to name anyone by name.  ::)

Good idea. Totally didn't think of that. Well what tile do people need and who's able to send me a replacement eventually? Hmm...I may also have to track down a Sharpie...

If some members like to help here, but you have no tiles left for signing - please tell here which tile do you need.

For example - I have many tiles in my collection - perhaps I have the tiles double which you want to sign for the great landscape.

kettlefish is willing to give away some of her duplicate tiles if this would help?

You haven't received mine yet? I sent them on Monday of last week (16th). I also sent something to quevy and kettlefish on the same day.

Nothing yet! :(

- blue frame - these tiles are a part of the signed tiles

- no frame - these tiles are still in my supply - which you can choose.

I've got some more signed tiles at the fan-meeting at Burg Konradsheim:
- 1st row:
left tile: a sign from a football player
right tile (Burg Konradsheim): a sign from the owner of that castle

- 2nd row: some of the  CoT-Team
- 3rd row: some of the CarcF members

Dan, once you have an idea of how many tiles you'll get and therefore how big the frame will be, would it be worth contacting Basically Wooden to see if they can make a custom Carcassonne-themed frame? Pending the cost, that would be a really nice touch.

Yes, it is rather inconvenient now that tiles from The Count have been signed as I will have to include the city of Carcassonne in the landscape, which I hadn't intended to do. But it's my own fault for not being more specific about which tiles I wanted. However, if I end up with duplicate tiles from The Count I'm not going to include two cities of Carcassonne just to accommodate this! So please let me know beforehand if you'd like to sign a Count tile and I'll confirm which ones not to sign...

I could include a full 12 tile city and then you can fill in the gaps using these. I got 4 copies of them and doubt I'll be using all 4 of them simultaneously.

It might be worth listing tiles you don't want signed, or tiles you now need in order to make the picture complete.

Hopefully you can get some people to sign some tiles to complete the City of Carcassonne.  But also you don't want 1/2 a school or Rivers with no starts or ends (unless they go off the side).  You don't want to have to have 2 cities of Carcassonne and I doubt you want someone to send you a signed wheel of fortune, nor duplicates of German Castles etc.

Hi all. It looks like we're going great guns with this as a community, so I just wanted to add a few clarifications to make sure that everything I receive can be used. It would be a real shame to be forced to exclude anything simply because I didn't have the foresight to publish some guidelines on what tiles can/ can't be used, so here goes:

The School
I don't want to include more than one school in the landscape and one tile (the left one) has already been signed by someone. So, if someone else wants to sign the right tile then that's fine as long as they post here so that nobody else does the same. But no more school tiles other than this please. C:-)

The Count
It looks from this post (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2162.msg30970#msg30970) as though tiles 3, 4 and 9 have been signed. Tiles 6 and 7 (the middle ones) have been sent by kettlefish to gantry and Scott respectively, and tile 2 has been sent to whaleyland. This leaves the following tiles: 1, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12. If you would like to sign a tile from the City of Carcassonne (the Count) then please make sure it has one of these numbers on the back. And please also ensure that you post here which tile you have chosen so that nobody else signs the same tile! Similarly, if you've already signed a tile from the City of Carcassonne please let me (and everyone else) know by posting here!

River 1/ 2/ 3
If you would like to sign a River tile then feel free but please don't make it either the spring or the lake. I will provide a spring and as many lakes as are required (in case one or more people sends a fork), and can include as many river tiles as I'm sent plus any extras (unsigned) if any "padding out" is required.

German Castles
It looks as though two German Castles tiles(') have already been signed so obviously I will include them. For this reason though, and because I don't want the landscape to end up being too castle-heavy, please don't send me any more German Castles unless you happen to own the castle. :o

Wheel of Fortune
Don't send me this. ::)

Hopefully this helps! Please ask here if you have any questions! :) :(y)

I doubt very much whether this is how the tiles will be arranged for the final landscape, but I was pleased that I could fit what I have into a 4 x 3 rectangle so neatly.

The example shows the base game and the 1.-3. expansion.
The tiles with the blue frame are signed or on the way for signing, but not yet in danisthirtys supply.
The tiles with the violet frame are signed and in danithirtys supply.

I received some more tiles from kettlefish today. Here's how things are looking at the moment:

(please note: landscape probably won't look anything like this when it is finished so don't be too critical of how I've arranged things, I just wanted to lay everything out for the purposes of an update photo)

The photo is pretty poor quality, but most tiles are signed and it looks pretty good! There's even one signed by KJW but he doesn't know about this so it will still come as a surprise to him... ;D

Keep 'em coming guys! :) :(y)

Hi Andrew the Ambo,
which Windroses version do you like to use?
- the Windroses I (originally published by HiG - with N, O, W, S)
or
- the Windroses II (originally published by Spielbox - with N, S).
------------------------------
N = North / S = South / W = West / O = Ost (E = East)

I'd be happy to jump in if quevy or kettlefish could send me a tile to sign. I'm not picky: I'll sign whatever's helpful + someone can send me to sign -- it can be part of the City of Carcassonne, or just a road, or whatever.

If you send me your address via personal message I am happy to send the tile.

Thanks quevy! :) Sent to you.

Thanks stalcupojoy, I look forward to receiving your tile. Let me know when you're ready to send it and I'll PM you with my address.

In terms of tiles, please don't use a tile from The Count as it'll probably end up being a duplicate. I could do with some 2 or 3 sided city tiles (non-splitters: ccff / ccrr / cccf / cccr) at the moment otherwise there are going to be a lot of small cities on this landscape!

A heads up, I will send my tiles this week. It will be river tiles and may be up to 18 of them (with river ends but you don't need to use them if you have some signed by others).

Thanks Paul. That's very generous of you. :(y)

Here is a photo of everything I have so far:

(the right side of the school is missing as I sent this to Benny for him to sign)

Not all of these tiles will be included in the final landscape where people have sent me more than one, but anyone who sends me at least one tile is guaranteed to be included! Promise. O:-)

did you get the tiles for signing ?

Hi,
Your envelope arrived today.
Am I supposed to sign both tiles myself, or is one for Gantry to sign?

Quote from: 'kettlefish to Scott - 08 12 2015'
Hi Scott,
please sign both tiles.
Gantry got his own envelope with two tiles some days ago.
Danisthirty has more possibilities if he has more tiles for the landscape.

Ok, I will drop them off at the post office today.

Wow, that's looking really good so far. I ordered a few tiles from CundCo the other night. Assuming that they are in stock (I ordered a few extra different ones just to be more certain) then I'll send you a signed one from Lukey-Dukey, Piklach and myself although it's likely to be several weeks unless delivery from Germany is quick.

Just to let you know, subject to stock then our intended tiles will be EH (CCCC), E (FFFC) and EG (FFFC) but we may end up having to substitute them with B (FFFF with cloister), A (FFFR with cloister), AM (RRRF with well) or EL (CCRR with inn).

I ordered an extra Carcassonne Box just for this!  So I now have 72-tiles to share (minus 2).

Perhaps I can send them to Franks, Merlin_89 because I need to post you stuff.

I will be taking the box to my local game group to get some more signatures too. My FLGs loves Carcassonne, they have a permanent display in the middle of the shop.

Welcome aboard Chuck!

All tiles are welcome, although it would be good if I had a few more corner roads or non-capper city tiles that I can use to build a few larger cities. Alternatively, there hasn't been much from T & B or The Tower yet either, so maybe a city tile from either of those would be good? Thanks!

@Benny - I received the other half of the school signed by you. Thanks for this! Glad we could make it right...

@Hounk - I believe I also received a tile from you (but couldn't make out the signature). Was yours a cccc (4 separate city segments) from I & C?

The final landscape shouldn't include more than one tile per person. Where people have sent me more than one tile it gives me more options as I can choose which tile to use based on what holes I need to fill.

NOTE: there is a little disclaimer underneath my last photo update prior to this one which says something along these lines

Mine were mailed yesterday!

8) Will let you know when they arrive...

Great, thanks Rich! Which tiles did you get? The 3 you initially hoped to get or did you have to make any of those substitutions?

Hi Dan. We managed to get all 7 tiles in the end so can choose 3 from any of these if needs be. However we were hoping to use EH, E and EG but we've all got a reserve choice and then 1 spare just in case. So, are you happy if we send tiles that you've already got or would you rather we tried to send different ones? Btw, please can you send me a PM with your address. Ta very muchly.

Hi Rich. Thanks for this.

If possible, could you send EL rather than EH? E and EG are both fine, but I already have two EHs and am very short on tiles that can be used to extend cities (such as ccxx or cccx) so the ccrr would be very welcome, especially since it also includes the inn. Hopefully this is OK, but in general I am always grateful for anything anyone is prepared to send.

Will PM you with my postal address.

I'm pretty sure if it was possible to overdose on Pepsi Max I would have done so years ago! But thanks for your concern ;)

I received tiles signed by Lukey-Dukey, Piklach and Rich_The_Fish today. Thanks for these! :) I also gave up my lunch hour in order to put them all together while I had the house to myself.

Here's what I have so far:

Don't forget, this isn't what the final landscape will look like, just an arrangement of what I have so far. My intention is to only include one tile per person, and although it is useful where people have sent me more than one tile (it gives me more options when putting the final landscape together), sending me 4 tiles doesn't mean you'll have 4 tiles in the final landscape!

@Paul: huge apologies but I completely forgot about your tiles as they'd been tidied away elsewhere and weren't in the box with the rest of the tiles. I will make sure they are included in the next photo.

I wasn't sure how readable everything would be but the photo came out pretty well.

At first I tried to have as many tiles as possible facing the right way so that the names could be read easily without having to tilt your head. But this got impossible after about half the tiles had been placed so I continued as best I could.

You must prove yourself by passing a series of cunningly devised challenges, each one more fiendish than the last. By the end of it you will be left questioning the very nature of your own existence, but the rewards are great indeed!

Or I could just PM it to you. Whichever's easiest.

Hi aenima,
this signed tile from the Crop Circles II (published with the mini 2 - the messengers) is the first one of all the minis 1-6 (7 = Crop Circles II).

I will send to Chooselife following tile for signing:

- HE - 2nd expansion - Traders&Builders

Well received, signed and it will be posted early next week. Loved your envelope and card by the way.

It's incredible the dedication that you and Dan put on this community.

When I have received the tiles from aenima and Chooselife I will post another photo...

I also need to do a bit of an audit of everything I've received and who they're all from. But I'll need a spare evening for this and those are in short supply at the moment so I can't say when it will be for sure.

EDIT: Also on the awaiting tiles from list: Ailurus, meepleater, Merlin_89, Guy, SRBO, Decar, Carcking

Hi all!

Sorry for being quiet for so long, I've had a rough time with my studies and exams. I will post a signed tile but I will first check with some close friends of mine who I play Carcassonne with often if they too are interested in signing tiles. So I'll be back in touch when I know how many tiles I/we need and if any of them have any preferences.

Great work everyone! This is going to be awesome! :D

Hi quevy, yes I found your tiles thanks. I've also received tiles from Merlin_89, Guy and SRBO. SRBO included something very special with his tile, shown below:

Sorry for not providing regular enough updates to keep everyone informed as to how this is going. I feel pretty bad about it as I really appreciate that so many people have given up their precious tiles and taken the time to post them to me. I haven't done a very good job of showing this and I'm sorry. :(

Truth is, updates have been less frequent recently as I now have so many tiles that it takes a fair while to put them all together. However, I decided that another photo was more important than getting to work on time this morning and am proud to be able to share the landscape below:

This now features every tile I've received including tiles signed by HiG and Carcassonne on Tour staff, Paul's river tiles and a couple of others which had been misplaced previously. So if you've sent me a tile which you can't find in the photo then please let me know so I can do a more thorough check. As far as I'm aware though, I have received tiles from everyone who's told me that they've sent one so I think we're good. :) :(y)

If you're still interested in signing a tile to be included but haven't done so yet, it's not too late. What's more, I can even provide you with a tile if you don't have any of your own to spare! Available tiles are shown below. If you wish to reserve one and have me send it to you then please post here to claim it so that nobody else tries to do the same, then send me a PM with your postal address so I can send it to you: :(y)

Also, tiles 8, 11 and 12 from the City of Carcassonne are available so please let me know if you'd like one of these 3 tiles and don't sign any of the others as I won't be able to use them without including a second City of Carcassonne (which I don't intend to do). No more School tiles or German Castles either please. If you have spare Tower tiles though, feel free to sign and send! Any other questions, please ask...

Dan, question!

I'm interested in participation, but since I would like to keep my collection complete (i.e. I really don't have any spares), I was thinking about buying two mini expansions (robbers and fliers) anyway. Is there still room for a cropcircletile somewhere in there? Because I'm not planning on buying all mini's, those are the only spares I'll have.

It looks really beautiful btw!

I've got the CC2-ferry tile (Min3KK; cfrf) and the CC2- mage and witch tile apparently (Min6KK; cccc). Although I bought a robber expansion, the wrong CC2 tile was in it. Hope you can use 'em.

Maybe it would be nice to use the labyrint (old preferably, I think, or new as a matter of symbol) as the center of the gift for KJW at Spiel?

OK: "Dan" ;)

This isn’t a bad idea, but with the inclusion of other starter-tile replacements such as the City of Carcassonne, the School and some river tiles it’s going to be tough working out where the middle is. I’d be happy to include one of these tiles somewhere though, as long as it is only one.

Do you wish to reserve this tile for yourself Valheru (since it was your idea)? Bear in mind that since I don’t expect to have any spares of this tile you’ll have to provide one yourself if this is OK...?

Did I say something wrong with the 'say Dan'? :D If so, I'm very sorry.

Well, I personally only have one tile that I ordered. But you're right that it will become difficult to place it in the middle. I was just thinking about it because the 'legendary' C is present on the front of this tile and it could provide something extra visually. Especially unsigned.

Didn't Paul order like a trillion copies? :P

No, I was just being unnecessarily pedantic and taking your comment a little too literally... ;)

I'm sure it would look good, but I'm hoping that the finished landscape will look good anyway so there's no huge dependency on it. If someone does have a spare though, hopefully they will donate it to this noble cause!

Didn't Paul order like a trillion copies? :P

I think it was actually two and a half trillion. He's hoping to organise the worlds largest game of Carcassonne ever, using just these tiles and no meeples. I'm sure the result will be a-MAZE-ing.

2. Sign a tile for KJW (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2162)
I'm so excited about having the privilege of presenting KJW himself with this landscape of individually signed tiles on behalf of CarcC, CarcF and other Carcassonne fans around the world. I need to bump the thread to make sure some of our newer members are aware of it as the cut-off date will be the end of this month (but I will still accept tiles posted before then). Then I need to arrange the tiles themselves and get a frame sorted before travelling to Essen in October. 8)

I had meant to do this, but never actually posted anything in this thread which was rather dumb of me. So, I'll extend the deadline to the end of July for anyone who still wishes to be part of this project. If this is the first you've heard of what I'm hoping to achieve (newer members?) please read the full thread and look at some of the previous photos to get an idea, then post here if you wish to be included and I'll let you know where to send your signed tile. Finally, please let me know what tile you wish to sign before signing it as we don't need any more German Castles, Halflings or School tiles. Thanks! :)

Just a quick reminder that anyone who still wishes to contribute a tile to this special landscape has until the end of July to let me know! A few tiles are available if you don't have any of your own to spare, please PM me for details...

It's been a while since I last posted an update on this but I think pretty much all of the tiles to be included in this are now with me. If you still wish to be part of this but haven't done anything about it so far then drop me a PM and I may still be able to squeeze you in.

I've done a count of all the tiles I have so far and have arrived at a figure of roughly 140 (including some extras which I will get friends who also love Carcassonne to sign). This means the final landscape with be 14 x 10 tiles giving it a width of 24.75 inches/ 63cm and a height of 17.625 inches/ 45cm. This will give it an overall area of more than a quarter of a square metre so hopefully the end result will be pretty impressive. And the icing on the cake will be a custom-made frame by our friends at Basically Wooden! (http://www.basicallywooden.co.uk/) :) :(y)

One important change has been that I have decided to allow up to 3 signed tiles per person as a lot of people sent me more than one signed tile anyway (in fact, several people sent me 6 but I won't be including all of these)! This is because, after spending a long time arranging the tiles into various patterns and configurations I couldn't arrive at anything I was happy with in terms of range of expansions covered and overall interestingness where I included just one tile per person, whereas some of the landscapes included up to 3 were much nicer to look at. I hope nobody will feel as though their contribution is in any way less significant than anyone else's because there end up being 1 or 2 fewer tiles with their name on than there might be for someone else. This isn't the point at all, but do PM me if it bothers you and hopefully we can arrange something.

Expect another update too. I probably won't include any more photos though as I want KJW himself to be the first person to see the final landscape 8)

Title: Re: Carc's 15th Birthday: Sign a tile for KJW
Post by: danisthirty on September 29, 2016, 07:53:04 PM
Well...

There was some disappointment when I learnt that Basically Wooden weren't providing the frame as a gift as I had originally thought, but wanted £300 for it! :o I'm sure it would have been a superb frame, but I simply can't afford that out of my own pocket and didn't want to have a whip-round since I've already asked people to contribute so much by way of the tiles themselves. And since the tiles are the most important thing, I'm going with a much simpler frame instead and should be putting it all together over the next week or so.

Once the landscape is complete, I won't be revealing the final thing until after it has been presented to KJW (obviously I will take plenty of photos beforehand).

Dan

Hello again! :) :(y)

Despite having both kids to myself all day today I managed to make some good progress on this. More than I was expecting anyway (which wasn't much)...

So after spreading all the tiles out across the table I've spent hours today doing what's basically been a jigsaw puzzle with no definite solution. Obviously I had to make sure that all tiles were placed legally, with as many as possible being the right way round and without putting tiles signed by the same people too close to similar tiles. It was quite a challenge coming up with something that I was happy with, but I managed it eventually after a lot of head-scratching and tile-swapping!

Just to add even more complexity into the mix, I had a request from one person who gave me about 14 tiles from themselves, their Carcassonne playing group and their family, along with some very specific instructions regarding tile placement such that tiles signed by various couples were next to each other in the landscape! :o I think I managed to accomodate this, but it drove me slightly mad in the process and since I'd spent so long arranging everything I numbered all the tiles (on the back) to make my life as easy as possible when I come to put the tiles into the frame.

Here are some photos I took in the process (without giving too much away about what the other side of the tiles is going to look like):

(yes there are now 150 tiles rather than the 140 I had originally stated, and no my big toe won't be included in the final landscape)

We're looking at 15 x 10 now rather than 14 x 10 which is 45cm by 68cm. Apparently this was meant to be as 50cm x 70cm is a relatively common size for a picture frame! :(y)

Getting excited now. Almost there! 8)

It's been a busy weekend so far, and I'm pleased to be be able to post the picture below of the final, framed landscape!

On Friday evening I cut the backing card down to size (50cm x 70cm) and began re-building the landscape I worked out last week on top of it. I admired it for a little while and made a couple of small changes, then began sticking the tiles in place using glue-dots. Two and a half hours later everything was stuck in place, and it was 3:30am... :o

Today I wrote a short message on the bottom of the backing card and fitted the landscape into the frame. It was a perfect fit and looked fantastic! :) :(y) Then I spent another hour or so carefully wrapping it up in bubble wrap followed by a couple of layers of brown paper and string. Here is the finished piece, ready to be driven to Essen and unwrapped by Klaus-Jurgen in less than a week! 8)

(DVD included for perspective, I'm not giving this away too as the kids would never forgive me)

I'm looking forward to posting some more interesting photos once this has been opened by KJW. For now though, I'll tell you this for free: there are 21 cities on the main farm!

Hello all. After a 1000km drive to Germany and back, KJW finally has his framed Carcassonne landscape!

Thanks so much to everyone who was involved with this project that has been running for almost a year. A lot of time and effort from many people went into this, but the end result was definitely very much appreciated and I'm delighted to be able to share the photos below (at last!):

I will write more about this when I've caught up on some sleep and when the craziness of the last few days has died down a bit, but I wanted to share these photos without delay and I hope everyone enjoys seeing them (as well as looking for any tile placement errors C:-)).

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I'm happy/ relieved to see that everyone else so far seems to be as happy as I was with the final layout!

KJW said he would have it hung on a wall in his house, and Udo promised to provide a picture of it there. I'm absolutely thrilled that this project has enabled so many of Carcassonne's fans to now be able to say that they have a tile with their name on displayed in the house of the man who started it all!

What does the text at the bottom say?!

The message at the bottom reads: "TO KLAUS-JURGEN WREDE, FROM CARCASSONNE FANS AROUND THE WORLD (ESSEN - 13/10/16)".
