Title: Preserving tiles with glue?
Post by: Drodo on September 02, 2020, 10:04:14 PM
I am scared of my rare old artwork C1 collection starting to show some wear. What is a good method to protect the tiles from use? Is it a bad idea to use a mild glue solution to protect them, similar to the spray used on puzzles?

I think the best way to preserve tiles is to sleeve them.
There are special sleeves specifically for Carcassonne tiles. 47x47 mm
These will keep the tiles on good condition.

I've got some of my rarest tiles sleeved, such as the Russian promo's, Spiel tiles and signed tiles.
The sleeves are from Swan Sleeves, and a maybe useful blog about them can be found here:

For UK based: I emailed BoardGameExtras, who normally doesn't hold them in stock, but they ordered a few packs especially for me.

I guess it depends on where you are based? Perhaps try the local game shop, or perhaps Amazon?

I think Swan sleeves are the brand:

Out of stock but: https://www.swanpanasiasleeves.com/products/swan-prem-adhesive-sleeves-47x47-mm

Don't 'protect' the tiles with glue.

I presume you still want to play with the tiles rather than archive them?

AGAIN:  Do NOT use glue.  Glue is water-based usually and when wet or damp, the glue will un-glue and re-glue to anything similar, like another glued piece of cardboard.

What you probably should do.  Preserve Carc-Tiles with a spray on clear coat.  I heard about a product in a video, Rustoleum Ultra Cover Matte Clear.  It tends to coat but not obscure artwork.  I suggest that you experiment with like tiles to see a result.  This same video also noted that the edges of cardboard may not be fully protected as the front.  A brush-on version of this product work.

Great Luck
