Carcassonne for more than 6 players?
« on: May 16, 2014, 05:05:53 AM »
There are always/often/not often but sometimes  :-\  more than 6 people who want to come to our house for games night, which is fine with some of the other games we play but the night doesn't feel quite right unless we crack out CARCASSONNE so I was wondering what your experiences have been when playing Carcassonne with more than 6 people?

Does the dynamic of the game drastically change when adding more players?

What's the most players you've ever played with and how did it play?

I'll be grateful for any opinions and advice!

I don't think I'd want to play with more than six people. A 6-player game was the largest I've ever taken part in but I found it quite boring having to wait for five people to take their turn each round before I could lay my next tile. I will rarely play with more than four people as it just feel pointless otherwise since the amount of control you have over the game diminishes too much after this and the influence of luck becomes too great...

I think most of us have enough trouble finding one or two people to play with! So unfortunately I can't help you, or sympathise with you either for that matter :)

Few years ago, we used to play 5-6 players almost every Sunday after football at a friend's house. I didn't find it tedious at all.
We used the base game with both rivers and the expansions Traders and Builders and Inns and Cathedrals.

If I recall, an average score was between 50-150.

EDIT:
Forgot to mention idea for more than six players. If you own several copies, you can split up playing two games.

World record holder for a single game of Carcassonne using 10 007 tiles!

Last Christmas I got to join many of my friends and we decided to play carcassonne. We were 8 and I have to agree the game becomes reallly really slow. I think 4 is optimal number for me, but between 2 and 6 the game is fine. All in all I still had plenty of fun, just don't count too much on completing features or very specific tiles to complete them. Maybe making a pact for all to take less than 20 seconds per turn would make it smoother.
Gotta catch 'em all

We have often played as pair's - and we also draw our next tile straight after the previous one so that you can plan your placement all through the other players turns. I know it could cause problems with repeat tile draws (builder) but we don't worry about that. You could also change play a little by each turn each player or pair lays 2 tiles, therefore increasing your chance of getting the tile you want.
Just lay the damn tile!

The pair's thing is also pretty cool as they talk about their plan and have to use hand gestures, code words or a different language - it can get quite funny.

I don't have any experience with more than 6 players (yet), but I have lots of advice:

My Carcassonne set is equipped for up to 12 players.

This is a great idea! We have a couple of sets so I think this could be fun. We could have a tournament and play different expansions on different tables. :)

The ultimate challenge:

71 players. Each player gets one tile (base game only setup). Only difficult part is the farmers but followers could be replaced by a number token each representing a player.  ;D

I know it brings about all sort of adjustments but we gotta get crazy once in a while!

That is great to hear. How was the game?

I hope, that you both will play your first game together in the next time...

I believe it was Whaleyland (if not, I apologize to whomever it was) who came up with the idea for two players to play simultaneously with more than 6 players.  I think the subject came up when Meeple Source first offered their alternate colored meeple sets.  Simply, whether it's 7 or 12 players, the two people sitting opposite each other at the table draw and play simultaneously.  This essentially cuts the playing time in half.  I think, if I recall correctly, that the only rule was that they could not play off each other (connect to each other's newly placed tile) so as to avoid any tile dueling.  It seems reasonable to me and I hope I get a chance to try it at some point.
Flee the fleas.

I'm not sure if that was me, but I like the idea. One of he two players would also have to have the trump card (probably a rotating token) that allows one player to place first in the event that both players want to place in the same spot or claim the same feature. Otherwise here could definitely be conflicts.
