The footnotes of the CAR
« on: May 25, 2014, 08:36:11 PM »
We like to discuss with the forum some thoughts about the footnotes of the CAR.

The new license partner of HiG - ZMG - makes also translation of the rules and like RGG in the past. We have sometimes 100% different official English rules than the original German rules.

In the CAR are the footnotes a very important part.

One part of the footnotes is the clarification of rules, because of all the questions about the game play with all the different expansions of this beautiful game.

One other part of the footnotes is to show the different official English rules from the publishers RGG and ZMG.

In the footnotes are some more information like suggestions of how to play (not official answers), open questions and some ideas for house rules.

That means for each page of the CAR we have many footnotes. Sometimes there is almost the half page footnotes...

In the background Obervet and I started to discuss about the footnotes.

In the next post I will show you some of our thoughts...
We like to hear what you all have to say...

...I'm going to add those as footnotes to the new CAR. With all of these incorrect translations, half of the CAR might be footnotes about translation problems...

Perhaps you need a "new" symbol for a wrong translation...
not the world, not the arrows. not the book...
perhaps the hand with the thumb down is a good icon?   :(n)

That might be a good idea. Of course, I suspect a lot of the arrows in the CAR would become thumbs down, because I think a lot of the variations have come from bad translations.

perhaps we should discuss this thumb down idea in the forum?
Sometimes it is nice to "hear" the others...

It would be fine to discuss in the forums. I forgot to mention it before, but in the CAR I will also color the footnote in pink to mark a major difference (like some of the Fairy rules).

That sounds like a good idea to me. It would be helpful to draw attention to those discrepancies so they are viewed as exceptions and it's understood they are not the rule.  :(y)
I just drew the perfect tile for my MonKnighThieFarmer!

Oh dear. I just realized I have had the RGG/ZMG rules embedded in my head.

CAR v6.4 pages 47-49 - fairy:

three pages only for the fairy

if you would put the complete original rule together - then you would need one page,
the other two pages would fill the footnotes...
-------------------

I saw some discussion about the mage and the witch...
the problem of moving one of the mage figures...

In the German rule is it clear that one of the mage figures has to move to another feature, because in the rules explain that it is not allowed that both figures stand on the same feature...

If the rule is to much stretched (because of the footnotes), then no one remember the sentence from previous pages.

That part of the rule is clear kettlefish. The question was; can you move one of the figures from a tile of a feature to another tile of the same feature, if the other figure is also not in the feature? The rule requires that the figure must move to a different tile, but doesn't specify that it must move to a different feature. It is understood that if both figures are in the same feature then one must move to a different feature.

To your comment regarding the formatting of the CAR - I don't think there is an issue with the way the CAR is layed out. It seems straight forward to me as it is. The color coding as suggested above in this thread will help greatly, but I'm not so sure elements of the CAR need to be moved around.

I thought the last round of answers from HiG had finally cleared that up? I seem to recall reading that Georg agreed that the intent of the rule is that the mage and witch figures must move to different features.

I laughed when I read the idea of using a thumbs-down icon for translation errors. I hope that it would not cause anyone at ZMG to feel offended.

I agree with Carcking regarding the current layout: it works well.
